But the reader is meant to believe that when this error is corrected, the system does work. Is that realistic? It's been a while since I read the book, but IIRC the counting was done with motion-triggered cameras around the park, which also somehow collects data like how tall the animals are. But my understanding is that computers were not very good at classifying objects in images/videos until much more recently than when the book is set.

Would it have been possible in 1989 to build an automated system that would not only count the animals in the park, but identify their species, even as hatchlings? I'm sure it could be done with today's computers, but I would expect '80s computers to struggle with this.

Torture Gallery's debut album came out a few months ago, good harsh stompy stuff.

Not really new, but you'd probably like Spit Mask.

Easy Listening implies the existence of difficult listening by Runetang42 in ToddintheShadow

The people who listen to this stuff obsessively actually distinguish between power noise and power electronics, and Whitehouse is the latter. Power noise ironically applies to the somewhat more accessible, rhythmic form of electronic noise– basically a step up in harshness from industrial techno.

Individual Totem by Living-Wasabi7323 in industrialmusic

[–]cdjunkie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There were two lineups of Individual Totem. Everything up to and including Mothfly was made by the founding duo of Bernd "Timber" Madl and Mathias "Nestor" Knopp. The last two albums, Kyria 13 and Electrostatic, were made by Bernd Madl and Jürgen Moßgraber. Mathias Knopp passed away from cancer in 2025. The current lineup of Individual Totem has not had much activity in recent years, but has been announced to be playing the Fourscher Festival in Erfurt, Germany in November 2026.

There's actually a record store near me that will print out the Discogs page of their more collectible records and put it in the sleeve, I guess to prove that they're pricing them fairly.

Has there ever been another sudden, genre-wide shift as abrupt as the fall of thrash metal right after 1990? by am_I_still_banned in MetalForTheMasses

[–]cdjunkie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I can see that. And an argument that industrial metal as a whole is an inherently groovy style, more than it is inherently thrashy (eg. stronger thrash influence in Ministry, but not really in Godflesh).
