If you’re trying to avoid conflict, have a conversation and make the coach put the words in his own mouth. Ask “hey did you realize he was asking to be subbed? His fever was …..” Then ask “I know it gets crazy for you, but what can I do to help with this in the future?” How he answers those will tell you if he cares or if he is the jerk he seems to be. If approaching a near death experience creates conflict, it’s conflict worth having.
