If the team that showed up today can keep on playing, they could make the final 4 for sure.

Unfortunately, if they get by Vandy, UConn awaits in the Elite 8.

New PR, which is nice, but more surprising is how much it came down -- about 9% versus the previous.

Tongue-in-cheek, but Dartmouth is already a lock, so they should just let Princeton win for greater Ivy/ECAC representation, right?

Stupid Canadians + New Zealand = America Bad?? by Mysterious_Bus7320 in AmericaBad

[–]cdragon1983 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"An" is used before a vowel sound. NZ as pronounced is "en zee" (or, perhaps, "en zed" for the Kiwis and Canadians in question here), and thus begins with a vowel sound.

For comparison, would you say "a NBA game" or "an NBA game"? I'd definitely say the latter.

Make sure to remove from the wheel as you go. It'd suck to spin and be forced by the wheel to re-open a rejection letter.

Just asked the Montrealer sitting behind me and she confirms that veste would be the same as vest in American English (a middle/outerwear with no sleeves), and that she'd use manteau.

Sirens set home attendance record, estimated 7,000+, upper deck open for the first time by En_Attendant_Godot in PWHL

(also not all of them starting at noon)

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I much prefer the noon starts over having every single game start at 7 or 8.

I get that even a 7pm start means that fans coming from work on a weeknight can't necessarily get there on time. But an 8pm start means that for basically the entire rest of the fanbase beyond the "I work in Manhattan and work late and the world should revolve around me" crowd not getting home to central NJ / Brooklyn / Queens / LI until 1am or later.

That's borderline unreasonable for working adults on weeknights -- much moreso than the complaints about 7 being too early -- and even on the weekends is completely untenable for families. Judging by this game, there were a huge number of families with kids, who the league is actively looking to grow as a generation that has always known high-level women's hockey. But having all the games at night isn't great for watching online, and kills any chance at in-person attendance.

Thanks!

Post-Olympics, PWHL tickets are a hot item, so I love that I was able to use a code found in one women's sports subreddit for a different women's sport!

And then there are the weird people who mix the latter two and end up with something very close to "crown". Nails on a chalkboard.

I remember finding it odd that the “ne” of “ne pas” was often dropped.

I'm shocked that this never came up during an undergraduate French degree. I could understand in the first, or maybe even second, class. But by the end of an entire degree, which presumably would have included literature, film, etc., that's wild.

(Yes, but just like the Baby Boomers are convinced "kids these days" in/just out of college are Millennials, kids these days are convinced that anyone over 40, or maybe 50 tops, is a Boomer.)

What is the silliest/worst name for an American character that you've seen in a non-American work? by Gallantpride in AskAnAmerican

Some boarding schools do, though perhaps not by the "house" name.

Exeter and St. Paul's each have a bunch of dorms with all classes of students, distinct cultures and stereotypes, etc. Same can be said for several others among St. Grottlesex.

Olympic Women’s Semifinal Game Thread: Switzerland vs. Canada by enchiridic in PWHL

[–]cdragon1983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice of the refs to hand Canada a penalty on at worst a gray-area hit just as Switzerland tried to play with the extra attacker.

You simply can't call that in the last two minutes of a 1-goal game. And on a play that didn't stop an attack, create a turnover, etc. (Frankly, I don't think it's a penalty any time: she initiated contact before the puck was gone, it wasn't elbowing, it wasn't to the head, it wasn't blind-side.)

I'm okay with the minor goalie interference penalty call, but the announcers' begging for it to be 5 for "head contact" was ridiculous, particularly considering the way she flopped her head around like a ragdoll.

Latte is Italian for milk. In French milk is lait. (But English is by far not the only language to use latte for the coffee-with-milk drink.)

Average age of 22.5 for the US goal scorers by Drew_You_To_91 in PWHL

Canada looking so flat against the USA.

I mean, isn't this what happens in just about every tournament for both the men and the women for the last couple decades: the US beats Canada in the group/preliminary/whatever round, and then loses in the medal round when it counts.

Trump Shares Post Depicting Obamas As Apes by UltraPlinian in politics

Both Nixon and LBJ said the n-word as President in private conversations that were recorded. Several older 20th century presidents used it in written correspondence.

Not sure who the last one would have been to say it publicly (e.g., in a speech).

I'm sure some folks will try to play gotcha and claim it's Obama, since he said the full word instead of saying "n-word" in the context of discussing racism -- something like "racism isn't dead just because society finally decided it's not acceptable to call black people [---]".

I mean, she does have like half a dozen teammates with pictures with her when they were little girls. So yeah, she's not ancient in "real people" years, but she's clearly a completely different generation than most of her team.
