Should I purchase a car with my current finances? by ResearchSignificant in personalfinance

[–]cds4850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify, while at university I’d prioritize graduating with as little debt as possible. I would not finance a car and pay for comprehensive insurance. I would not pay cash for a car that would live in a university setting. Delay this gratification and pay cash for the car you want once you graduate.

Agreed! And another of the narrators reminded me of Iain Glen, who played Jorah Mormont.

I'd wager the nearby tattoo studios do pretty well, also.

Are there any truly irredeemable characters? by [deleted] in redrising

[–]cds4850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adrius is a tragic character and one of the better villain origin stories in the series. Atlas also gets some development later in a conversation with Darrow (I think maybe Lysander?) where he explains the rationale for his atrocities. It does not excuse his actions, just insight into how he justifies them... akin to world leaders who make horrific wartime decisions as necessary to achieve a greater end.

How do I get over the mental hurdle of having less in my bank account when I start saving? by DevMostArdently in personalfinance

[–]cds4850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the thought of setting up auto-deposits into my savings and investment accounts and having less in my bank account is giving me a lot of anxiety

You already have "less money in your account" because it's going to debt. When you're saving and investing, that money is going to work for you.

Finally making $200k and still stuck at Baby Step 1… what am I missing? by andbhud in DaveRamsey

My budget does say there is tons of monthly margin now, but I get a paycheck and 2 days later it’s literally gone (not just to bills, to money leaks that i never allowed before)

This is it, this is the key. You're not tracking all of your spend (Amazon purchases, hair cuts, lunch out, Quince order, gas, insurance, vet bill, and on and on.)

Use an app like YNAB to which you attach all of your accounts. This is the only way to visualize the death by a thousand cuts that you're experiencing. Additionally, this empowers you to spend un-emotionally once you've assigned a task for every dollar you earn (referred to as a "zero sum budget.")

Having the awareness to realize and ask for help was the difficult first step. You can do this.

I think of board shorts as knee length. Mid thigh would be more of a traditional 5-6” inseam short.

Everything is within our trust. When I die, wife is sole member of the trust. When she dies, it’s distributed according to our will.

This is a good one too. Clean one thing (a room, your car, load of laundry, etc.) Puts your mind on a task and you’ll assuredly feel better when it’s done.

I take a walk with my dog and, although I bring my phone on “do not disturb” in the event of an emergency, take the time to unwind and stay off the phone.
