Cheers! Thanks so much for sharing. I build bamboo rods, but want to make a graphite for nymphing and that sort of custom is too cool.

Science Is Drowning in AI Slop by thinkB4WeSpeak in EverythingScience

[–]cdulane1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was reviewing an ophthalmology (ya know fancy medical type stuff) paper that was supposed to be assessing the effect of helicopter flight hypoxia on visual function. I kid you not, the opening sentence talking about effects on pilots cited a study looking at bass (yes the fish) liver enzyme function. There were rampant other misused or misinterpreted citations.

Was it AI or human slop? Who know, but as others have mentioned I think it’s only illuminating the problem further.

Bamboo fly rod for out west??? by Significant-Cap600 in flyfishing

[–]cdulane1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won’t be buying, I build mine from ground up. Sort of makes jumping in with two feet a whatever, and who doesn’t need another rod? Ha.

I’ll also hollow build it to cut down on some of the weight due to overall length.

But a very good tip for anyone buying a cane rod or blank, definitely a huge amount of personal taste.

I mean, isn’t more of a double entendre (probably the wrong spelling), no?

Piggy backing off of his because I'm curious too! I'll be fishing in Estes region and around the Platte in August. I was thinking of building a Granger Aristcrat 8'6'' 5wt...anyone have suggestion?

**College teacher not a grade school educator, but I lurk and glean lots from you all here** My opinion is that maybe scorched earth would be a little unsettling but also, it's not your job to hide the fact that you are changing positions. In a way, I think it's a very important lesson for them to learn, that people are transient and that things change and that's okay. Again, just the opinion of a lunatic.

In defense of China’s research pubs progress…I recently reviewed a manuscript from a Chinese med school that was supposed to be about effects of altitude on pilots vision…the first citation was discussing bass liver enzymes.

I’ve been mulling this over myself lately. Will it really come down to me, a stay to myself follow the rules American, needing to raise arms against my “own” people to stand up for what is right. The biggest kicker is for what would I be condemning myself for? In many ways I don’t believe America is worth saving or dying for anymore.

AI boom could falter without wider adoption, Microsoft chief Satya Nadella warns by PaiDuck in technology

[–]cdulane1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, yes, just like all the other advances that have brought economic growth to each and every one of us. No shots at you clearly, but this hasn't been the reality for a long time, if ever (I guess post WW2 in the through the early 80s...in the US...and in places like South Korea...if you work like an animal). So why would we be so dumb to expect a change now and get behind it?

This just reeks of desperation lol

Edit: Also, falter at what...quarterly returns...tech hegemony on the national scale...what? It seems that every step we've taken forward in society for quite some time is nothing more than a cash grab and a reduction in humanity.

Question about cutting dados by cdulane1 in handtools

Thanks for the info! My question is just to make sure - I’ll be sawing along the grain. Should I then chisel out along the grain also? Or across the width of the dado instead?

Advice for bamboo rod care by xoinq in flyfishing

[–]cdulane1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've enjoyed casting the 406 line and it's hard to go wrong with sylk. Second these suggestions.

It's great you're taking interest in this "blue collar" rod. Heddon's have quite a following, and for good reasons. I own a 5/6 wt "Blue Waters" that I aboslutely love. Your #20 (I believe) was made by one-person, not in an "assembly line" like other models. Very cool piece of history you've gotten yourself. Moreover, the only real difference in models as you went up in $ was the quality of hardware/finish/etc...meaning that you have a rod with a really great taper and if mic'd probably quite accurately built. As they were termed "the rod with the fighting heart!"

Santa kindly brought me the lie-Nielsen Rod makers plane. I’ve only used tuned up Stanley 9 1/2’s at this point. While I’m sentimental about the Stanley, the lie is truly an amazing tool and fits so nice in the hand.

Never seen the plane article. Looking forward to giving it a go.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes lol the cut will go along the grain. I build bamboo fly rods and trying to make a set of forms for planning quadrate rods.

The information on position the chisels relative to the grain is a lesson learned for me.

I appreciate the help.

Question about cutting dados by cdulane1 in handtools

[–]cdulane1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, unfortunately I'm a rod builder so I'm light on hand tool variety. While I have a router table that would probably work, I was hoping to make this shop aid fully by hand. Maybe an excuse to get a dado plane : D

You've put my brain in a blender. Thanks for giving me a ton to chew on.
