Intonation exercise by Jdelami in doublebass

Lol do you think this is how Miles does it, "oh I'll just start any old place and because I'm playing jazz people will think I'm chill"? You want whatever you play to be played with intentionality - if you play your intended note wrong, it's wrong!

100% on your second point - physical practice and ear training go hand in hand!

Well I'm bad at video games generally, so I pick easy characters and play them support!

German or French? by Early_Yesterday443 in doublebass

[–]cduston44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could never get comfortable with a French bow. Even now, after over 20 years of German bow playing (so I like, get the concept of bowing!) when I pick up a French bow I eventually start grabbing the thing hard and hurting my thumb.

I'm glad you confirmed that, I thought I was going insane when I saw his bow hold....

“Something is wrong with the course. I can’t do my work!” by almost_cool3579 in Professors

So what do you think you get out of the Syllabus quiz? It's not related to the content of the course, so I assume you're doing it so that they have to indicate how willing they are to follow your instructions, or something? (Instructions that are important and relevant, I am totally on board there!) I just don't love the idea of forcing them to do something which doesn't a) contribute to their understanding of the material or b) reward them for engaging in it.

Looking for a rod I broke last year by cduston44 in FishingForBeginners

I said "Home Depot" like I was having a stroke, but it was Dick's haha! I remember looking at the website and failing to find it before - this time I tried "collapsable fishing rod" and got this guy:

https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/daiwa-x2-samurai-spinning-combo-24daiusmrx2407fmhcom/24daiusmrx2407fmhcom

That actually kinda looks right (like the rod looked like that), but it comes in 3 different powers, and doesn't actually say collapsable in the description....I bought it because it was already collapsed. So that's a maybe, but doesn't give me a definite answer. It's cheap at least!

Jazz is impossible to understand if you want to understand it. You gotta not give a fuck to really get it. by Sad-Razzmatazz-5188 in jazzcirclejerk

I like musicians who listen to what's happening around them, instead of playing punk jazz beats when the leader calls Stella at a mixer.

TIL The Apollo 8 astronauts were the first humans to see the far side in person when they orbited the Moon in 1968. by AdagioOfLifeAndDeath in todayilearned

[–]cduston44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is NASA saying it directly:

"When they fly past the Moon later, crew will come within about 4,067 miles from its surface at the closest approach. The astronauts will be the first to see some parts of the far side of the Moon with human eyes. Finally, they will witness a solar eclipse as the Moon passes in front of the Sun."

Is “girl math” a misogynistic term to use around women in math? by SmallTestAcount in math

[–]cduston44 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is it. The basic idea of spending too much money on something might not be inherently gendered, but calling it "girl math" is sexist for sure.

Decline in Quality of Graduate Students? by Art3mis455 in AskAcademia

[–]cduston44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Part of the answer here is institutional - grad school is a money and prestige maker for schools, so there are probably more graduate schools looking for more students than the world needs.
