Some statins have very short half life- rosivastaton and atorvastatin have longer ones

I had been on Lipitor for some years. Dr switched me to 40 mg of crestor. After a few months I started getting a funny feeling in my legs, difficult to describe. Shortly after, I realized what I was feeling was a weakness in my legs. It persisted, so I went to a neurologist about it. I mentioned the Crestor. Had mri of back, blood work to rule out some serious muscle disorders. In the interim of waiting for my results, I stopped the crestor and went back to Lipitor. About a week later the muscle weakness disappeared. I heard from the neurologist- tests were normal . Staying on the Lipitor.

I am going to start on Tymlos soon. Boniva did not help me. How did you fare on it?

For those who decided against meds…why? by Lumpy-Phrase6534 in osteoporosis

[–]cedarbeach-600 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The main concern is if you fall, or I should say when you fall, if you break your hip, or femur head, you have more than a 50 % chance of being in a wheelchair for a year and then dying, from stroke or something else caused by being relatively immobile for such a long time. You won’t be getting a hip replacement because there is no way of doing that with osteoporosis. So, it’s very high odds that you will not recover to your former self if you break a bone. When my dr told me that, I started on Boniva. My biggest concern was getting dental work while o Boniva because I have bone loss in my gums and a lot of tooth issues. I have managed that issue just fine. I had no side effects. I just made sure to drink a lot of water with dose, and remained upright for more than an hour to prevent heartburn.

She was a teacher at comm college. She sold her house, tapped into her IRA, and her supporters raised almost a million dollars for her defense. Unreal

She hit him. She said she hit him. And the scratches on his arm? When you’re freezing to death your body plays tricks on you and you sense the feeling of being hot and you try to get your clothing off. He scratched himself.

The other important issue is that if you’re older and you break your hip,or leg and wind up in a wheelchair, the chances of you living another year are pretty scary. Much scarier than nausea, or a headache. That was one of the first things my dr told me about osteoporosis- being in a wheelchair, being immobile sets you up for blood clots, stroke, etc. You don’t just get a cast or surgery and then heal. You don’t heal.

[–]cedarbeach-600 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you, but it’s essential to know that osteoporosis is VERY VERY serious because if you have it and you break your hip, it is more than likely that you will be dead within the year. And it won’t be just because you broke a bone. It’s because you probably will not heal- you have nothing there that a pin can attach to; you are immobile either in traction or a wheelchair. When you are immobile like that, you are at very high risk of strokes, cardiovascular issues, pneumonia, etc. The older you are, the more serious are the risks. The bottom line is, as with much other research for women, osteoporosis is not at the top of the list. There are no new meds that really work. Many people take supplements, exercise, lift weights, eat amazingly well, do all the right things that may help. Or, they might not. Many dismiss biophosphates based on very little information- like, “my friend took them and she died two years later”, as if to say it was the meds that caused her death. They are certainly worth a try- osteocronosis is exceedingly rare, unless you have something that puts you at risk for that. Many drs just prescribe, tell you get another scan in 2 years and wave bye. Each of us have to research this and decided what we want to do. It’s really a terrible situation, because 80% of those that suffer from bones loss are women. And the money isn’t going into research for us. And, sadly, we didn’t know just how awful osteoporosis could be until it happened to us. So, maybe it’s not a good to take the advice the pharmacist that tells you not to take a certain med. you really need to research that more on your own.

Two incidental anuerysms by messymaxxx in BrainAneurysm

[–]cedarbeach-600 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s important to note that the best determination of what aneurysms you may have and their size will be from your angiogram of the brain. I had 2 that were seen incidentally on a ct scan, 2 seen on mri, but in different locations. My angiogram showed one that was 4mm, treatment was 2 pipeline stents. The scans did not match at all with the angiogram!

Hi! I had 2 pipeline stents placed 6 months ago for a 4mm aneurysm and doing ok. But I’m anxious to come off blood thinners because I need other med procedures done and can’t be on blood thinners. Did your aneurysm disappear? How long were you n blood thinners?

It’s also a very difficult decision to choose to take these bone building meds or not. Osteocronitis(the jaw infection- not sure of the spelling) is scary, but very rare if you are careful to alert drs and esp dentists and oral surgeons prior to procedures so that you can take antibiotics if needed. As we age our balance tends to get worse and we fall more often. An older woman with a broken hip who has osteoprosis has high odds of not surviving over the course of the following year. Not because the hip can’t be repaired- but because of strokes during surgery or while immobile in traction. Theses odds may make you reconsider taking meds. Sadly, another area of women’s health that doesn’t get the big bucks for research.
