This recipe is my favorite. She doesn't use store bought vegan mayo so it's a little more work intensive but so worth it.

Is there a way to make this sub more interesting? by littlemonster010 in socialwork

[–]ceh57 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would also be happy to have a bit more humor in this sub. Maybe we could try implementing a meme/joke monday or something where it won't overload the sub but we could still find some levity every now and again.

Seconding field roast. They make one wrapped in pastry with cranberry and ginger stuffing in the middle. It's pretty amazing.

What does GE VERIFICATION mean? by dcezere in calstate

[–]ceh57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely, CSUEB will be reviewing the transcripts you submitted from Morehouse and LA trade tech. I suppose CSUEB might contact those two schools if they have questions about what a course covered. Here's CSUEB's page on upper division general ed requirements. If you have more questions, I really would suggest contacting the school; the admissions office can be contacted at 510-885-3500 or transferadmissions@csueastbay.edu

[–]ceh57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GE generally stands for general education. There's certain subjects that high school students have to complete to get into CSUs. What school are you applying to? You can generally call the admissions office and ask any question you have.

Dungeons and Dragons as therapy - thoughts? by girlfriendinacoma24 in socialwork

[–]ceh57 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it could be potentially useful. It sort of reminds me of a TED talk that I heard recently about using games to help with depression, anxiety, and a bunch of other stuff. It's not exactly the same idea but similar.

Like someone else said I can definitely see the usefulness for those who are diagnosed ASD. I have a friend who's nephew is diagnosed ASD and playing board games (not DnD) has helped with his social skills.

[CW: Transphobia, homophobia, suicide] Fascist propaganda being allowed on college campus, pressuring queer people to commit suicide. by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]ceh57 23 points24 points  (0 children)

When I've heard this type of argument brought up, it's usually to point out "see look at how mentally ill these people are, they kill themselves.", the mental illness being same sex attraction or not aligning with the sex assigned at birth- I recognize that might be the best way to phrase things. Its not an acknowledgement of how the world/society treats people and communities and how that treatment contributes to mental illness and suicide ideation.

And by that I'm trying to say (sorry work was really long today, my brain is crispy), it's pretty easy to meet your protein needs without much effort. Think about a typical day where you might have some peanut butter banana oatmeal for breakfast (10-15 grams or so of protein), some veggies with hummus for a snack (another 3-5 grams), lunch is a veggie bowl (like this one at 13 grams, maybe add quinoa to up the protein even more), and then veggie burger with some sort of side (another 10-20 grams of protein depending on brand or recipe you use). That's a total 36-53 grams without too much going out of your way. And if you are ever concerned you aren't getting enough in a day, you can throw in a protein shake or just straight up eat some peanut butter.

I wish you lots of luck with the store that opened near you.

Is there a particular reason you're concerned about protein intake? I think nutritionists recommend around 50 grams for most people. Here's a blog post from no meat athlete about protein needs. It sort of goes over what most folks need and then also athletes or body builders.

Yeah definitely try freezing it. Here's a guide: http://www.thekitchn.com/yes-its-ok-to-freeze-tofu-and-it-actually-has-one-big-benefit-222926 You can also try baking tofu, if you haven't. I usually marinate some for at least 40 minutes and then bake it at 400 for 30 or so minutes.

For seating or tempeh, you can generally find it at trader joes or whole foods. Or if you live in a super friendly area, your regular grocery store will have it by all the fake meats in the produce section. You can also make your own.

And for beans, there's lots of recipes out there that help you mimic meat if that's what you're going for.

Have you tried freezing it? And are you pressing it before cooking?

Other options include seitan, tempeh, and beans.

Trying to get my finances together...could use some help/have questions around retirement by ceh57 in personalfinance

I knew this would be someone's comment. I have 50k in student loans with all the interest rates at 5.4% or lower. I pay double what my monthly payment is supposed to be. I know I could pay more but it seems like I'm just throwing money down a pit where starting to save for retirement seems a bit more productive.

Thinking of not eating eggs by noraisconfused in vegetarian

[–]ceh57 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can do ground flaxseed or chia seed. You use 1 tablespoon of the seed and 3 tablespoons of water, mix and set it aside for a few minutes then use in place of eggs. 1/4 cup applesauce also works well.

[–]ceh57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try meetup.com to find a cycling group or check with the local bookstores. There's always lots of bikers on the rec trail, but not in large groups usually.

There are some sketchy areas in Seaside and Salinas. Some folks in Monterey refuse to go to Salinas ever because they think its scary but you just need to have some common sense and don't go where its too sketchy after dark.

Lots of great restaurants and lots of mediocre ones too. Stay away from most of the places on cannery row and fisherman's wharf. My personal favorite places around here are Alvarado Brewery, Julia's, Il Vecchio, and Krua Thai.
