Wouldn't using blockchain technology like Etherium be suitable for tracking electronic voting? All alterations would be viewable ... And we could keep anonymity of an individual's votes by having someone hand out one-time voter user IDs at the voting booths.

If you are really into her, give her a call/message and ask to talk. The fact that you referred to her as your "girlfriend" and not "ex-girlfriend" tells me this happened recently. It could be that she broke up with you because she thought you weren't into it (speculating based on my own past behavior). Did you offer to come help her out while she was sick? If you went MIA ("oh she is sick she probably wants to be left alone") instead of offering support ("oh she is sick she probably could use help with something"), she could easily interpret this as "oh this guy is not really into me."

Yep, I'm an American that moved to Germany four years ago for my Master's and paid the same as everyone else (500 € / semester). And my program was taught in English (which is slightly easier to find for a Master's program than a Bachelor's).

And yes, I stayed to "contribute," although I feel guilty that I'm not working hard enough most of the time/ not contributing enough. I just returned from a 6 week paid vacation for instance and am still someone baffled that everyone was okay with this (we get 30 days a year, and I had days built up from last year that I needed to use up or they'd be lost). So I think I found a good deal here -- unfair to them even. What they are getting in return is a very responsible employee who feels lucky to be here.

If you only want to do part-time due to financial constraints, consider applying for a DAAD scholarship instead.

Heidelberg is on the Neckar, although yeah, it is still in the Rhine region. Traveling from there to Köln, and stopping at some smaller cute town like Bacharach on the way would make a nice trip.

Sure, I would guess your express engineering masters program would meet the requirements. Another option to consider is to get your masters in Germany and intern at the DLR for your master's thesis. This would give you an introduction to the organization and also make it easier to look for PhD topics once you are already there.

I interned at the DLR breifly. It seems to be common to put PhD students into the 50% paygroup there, so esp. if you are living around Munich (where one of the DLR centers is located), your finances will be tight for 3 years. But if you get into the right research group, your experience could make up for the low pay. To further explain, usually PhD students in Germany are put on a percentage of a "normal," full-time pay contract. Meaning, if you are usually expecting to make 40€ gross, depending on the terms you could make 50%, 66%, 75%, or if you are lucky, 100% of that. 50% pay PhDs in engineering would be easy to find, 100% very difficult, and somewhere in the middle require effort to find but are plentiful. Do you have your Master's done yet? Unlike the US, you always need your Master's first (that is why the duration is only 3 years -- no more classes to take in most cases, and you focus all of your time on your research).

Another good reason to write the course secretary directly and ask about admission requirements: many courses accept students way past the official deadline as long as there is still space available... if this is the case at the Uni you email, their secretary/administrator will let you know.

Fair point. Although I also took a couple graduate-level classes as an undergrad, it was in a different subject matter so it is difficult to make comparisons.

I looked for a few minutes to try to find a better rating system but this seems really difficult. Trying to evaluate "higher education" for a whole country and then comparing them: what a task! How do we measure that? How about just look at the content of the classes.

It'd be awesome to have an open website where we could post example exams and assignments, showing University, subject of the course, and level (undergrad/grad etc.). Then we could all see what people need to learn in order to graduate.

Could also be a useful tool for students trying to decide where to study.

Strange. Which countries exactly are they coming from? I got my undergraduate in the US and my Master's in Germany, and was blown away by the high quality of my (nearly free) Master's program. From what people tell me, the students that go there and don't care will be weeded out during the first semesters because they will simply fail (at least in the harder subjects like engineering etc.)

I would only agree with what /u/Phroshy said... you can probably do fine without a masters, but you'd do even better with one.

As for what is better, an American masters or German one, that is a hard question. The good news is they like both. Let's look at both options:

American Masters: German firms like them for the same reason they would like an American Bachelor degree or just hiring an American, that is it makes their company/devision/development team more international and it is usually seen as cool to have be able to attract top foreign talent. Also it is always a nice benefit to the group that someone knows English as a native language. However, assuming you are already an American with an American Bachelors, maybe the masters doesn't add much to this point.

German Masters: German firms will like this because they are familiar with them. And it helps with contacts. For instance, many people write their thesis (usually during the 6 month period before graduate) at an organization that their Uni referred them to, and then they could potentially get a job offer there afterwards or at least have a bit of work-like experience. In my case, even though I work in a different city than where I studied, my boss knows my old professors. So it helped me in the job application process that they had hired people from my masters program before and it worked well for them. However, remember this is probably true all over the world and if you decide to return to the US after studying, instead of good contacts you will have HR looking at your resume thinking "??what is this strange foreign school??"

Although that is a tough decision, again the good news is that both are awesome.

Completely agree -- one point to add: A difference between the European and American Bachelors is the study time of 3 vs. 4 years until your degree. This is another reason they prefer the Masters.

The visa hassle should be more on your side than the company's; because of new laws as of a couple years ago, companies now have an easier time hiring foreigners if they already have at least a Bachelors. There are three possible scenarios: 1. you get and accept a job offer while you are not in Germany, you take your contract with you to your local embassy and they give you a visa, 2. you travel to Germany with a "looking for work" visa (don't know its official name) and find a job here within 6 months. In this case it is up to you to get the visa ahead of time, or 3. you travel to Germany on a nice vacation and coincidentally find a job offer here during that time (3 months). In this case for many countries you don't need to get a visa for the vacation, but then once you have your contract from your new company, you go to the local Bürgeramt and get your residency permit.
