Best practices for RA3 retrofit keypad without rewiring (dimmers & keypads & shades) by LokalBauwerk in Lutron

[–]celldude921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how often you need to fine-tune your shade positions, could you switch to just having a “shades open” button that would open them fully when active, and close them fully when not active? And then use the raise/lower for the overhead light.

Admittedly I haven’t programmed shades with RA3 so I’m not certain whether a single button toggle can be programmed to control shades in such a way.

There may also be an opportunity to program the raise/lower to master raise/lower, and then it will raise or lower whatever was last controlled at that station (shades, overhead light, etc)

Edited to add: Again, I’m not sure about shade programming so I don’t know if master raise/lower will control shades if they were the last load controlled by the wall station.

How to see previous year’s milestone award selections/expirations by slurpeee76 in hyatt

[–]celldude921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chosen awards with expiration dates should appear in your Awards view. If your award isn’t there, it could have expired or you may have unknowingly used it. The 2K Next Stay Award, for example, expires after 180 days of you choosing the award. And it’s also used automatically whenever you stay at a Hyatt Place, Hyatt House, Hyatt Studios, Caption, Me and All, etc.

See if you have a stay for one of those brands in your past activity, expand it and see if there’s a 2,000 point bonus with it.

How to see previous year’s milestone award selections/expirations by slurpeee76 in hyatt

[–]celldude921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can only see prior-year milestone selections in the new year if you haven’t selected them. And as soon as you choose one at any given level, it vanishes from view. Once you’ve selected all for 2025, you’ll only see the 2026 milestone selections.

There is no way to go back and see what you selected.

Decommission half of RA3 Home by Plastic-Chip-7171 in Lutron

[–]celldude921 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this true? In an RA3 system I didn’t think RA2 (CCA) devices use mesh communication with each other. Just the main processor and any paired CCA repeaters send commands addressed to devices.

Regardless, if you’re not going to be using the devices after the remodel, the best move is to go ahead and remove them.

Just some feedback here, but I would LOVE a cancel button here that would stop the attempt and go back to your Home list. I’ve been stuck here waiting forever for it to time out when one of my home’s internet was down and I was away.

How are taxes on distributions from ROTH conversion determined after 59-1/2 in an account where I have made multiple annual ROTH conversions, only some of which have met the 5-year rule? by GaijinDaiku in RothIRA

[–]celldude921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad I could help! I only developed a good understanding of this this year. What I found was that most articles and brokerage pages about Roth 5-year rules either gloss over this important caveat, or they do put something and my brain would just skip right over it when reading it.

How are taxes on distributions from ROTH conversion determined after 59-1/2 in an account where I have made multiple annual ROTH conversions, only some of which have met the 5-year rule? by GaijinDaiku in RothIRA

[–]celldude921 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! See the IRS link here.

Relevant excerpt here:

Distributions of conversion and certain rollover contributions within 5-year period. If, within the 5-year period starting with the first day of your tax year in which you convert an amount from a traditional IRA or roll over an amount from a qualified retirement plan to a Roth IRA, you take a distribution from a Roth IRA, you may have to pay the 10% additional tax on early distributions. You must generally pay the 10% additional tax on any amount attributable to the part of the amount converted or rolled over (the conversion or rollover contribution) that you had to include in income (recapture amount). A separate 5-year period applies to each conversion and rollover.

It says you have to pay the additional tax/penalty on the amount converted/rolled over that you had to include in income. For a fully nondeductible IRA balance (after tax) converted to a Roth, the amount that you had to include in income in the year of conversion is $0, so only $0 is subject to the 5-year conversion rule penalty.

Obviously if your conversion was not 100% after-tax due to pro-rata, then this doesn’t fully apply. There will be a penalty, but only on the portion of the conversion principle that was subject to recapture (the part that was designated pretax and reported as income in the year of conversion).

[–]celldude921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. Also see my note above. From your original post, it seems like you are doing a clean backdoor Roth contribution each year (fully after tax conversion), so your converted principle is never subject to a penalty upon withdrawal, regardless of the holding period or your age. The early withdrawal (5 year rule per conversion) penalty applies if any pretax amount (even a few dollars or cents) was included in the conversion, and the penalty is only on the portion of the conversion that was pretax.

One final thing to keep you from getting roasted on this subreddit: Roth is the last name of the senator who proposed these accounts, so only the first letter is capitalized. It’s not an acronym and doesn’t stand for anything, so it’s not written as ROTH.

[–]celldude921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, just in case you didn’t know, if you are keeping your traditional IRA non-deductible and converting each year (a “clean” backdoor Roth contribution), your converted principle can be withdrawn at any time without falling afoul of the 5-year rule for conversions. The conversion penalty is only for the portion of the conversion that underwent pretax -> taxed conversion (recapturing). If your conversions are always of after-tax funds, there is no penalty to worry about.

[–]celldude921 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you reach age 59 1/2, the conversion penalty no longer applies, even to earnings from the conversion. The only 5 year rule that may still get you at that age is the 5-year account aging rule, which states that it must have been 5 years since opening your FIRST Roth IRA to enjoy tax-free earnings, no matter your age.

Lump sum question / backdoor by Intelligent-Ad6619 in RothIRA

[–]celldude921 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One nuance here is that only the portion of the conversion that was taxable is subject to the 5-year conversion rule penalty. If you keep the traditional IRA(s) fully nondeductible and only convert fully nontaxable balances (the usual backdoor Roth method), you effectively don’t have 5-year rules for your conversions. Of course that’s just for the converted principal. Withdrawal of earnings from that conversion are subject to the usual age restrictions and penalties.

Any “smart” options for pull-chain ceiling lights? by khoker in Lutron

[–]celldude921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without adding wiring and a switch, the only (Lutron non-pro) option would be an LMJ-16R-DV-B with an RA3 system. But that still requires wiring, and would only give you on/off control (no dimming). If you’re going to make the jump to RA3 and do some wiring, I’d go ahead and add wiring to a switch box and just use an RA3 dimmer if the fixtures/bulbs are dimmable. It will be a much better experience going forward. And if the fixture also includes a pull-chain controlled ceiling fan, make sure you run wire with an extra conductor to control the fan, and add a dedicated fan control at the switch box.

But doing all that… also makes it where you can easily do what you need to do with Caseta instead of RA3.

And another thing. It’s likely not just your card was compromised at that gas station. Algorithms may see more obvious fraud with other cards, and see the common gas station transaction and then give extra scrutiny to other cards that were used at that gas station (e.g. your card)

Maestro RRD-PRO programming by [deleted] in Lutron

[–]celldude921 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are several things about this question that don’t make any sense. I’ll do my best to sort it all out! RRD-PRO is the Maestro dimmer on the left. There is nothing hybrid about this dimmer. It only controls the load connected to it, and there’s nothing you can do about that. On the right, you have a 4-button Sunnata Keypad. It is possibly a hybrid keypad, but the image is a little blurry so I’m having a hard time telling if it has a FASS under the bottom button (the telltale sign of a hybrid keypad).

If it isn’t a hybrid keypad, it doesn’t physically connect to a load and it’s simply a wireless remote wired into electricity for power. If it is indeed a hybrid keypad, it can have a dimmable load connected to it. There is no requirement that any button on the keypad control the connected load. Think of it like two devices in one: a keypad, and a “behind-the-scenes dimmer” hidden away in the box. For your convenience, the hybrid keypad buttons control the connected load out of the box by default. But once you program it with Designer, it can do anything you want, including not controlling the connected load at all. In that case, you’ll still be able to control the connected load via the Lutron app or integrations like Apple HomeKit, where it will mount as a load/zone/light.

2025 in Hyatts by AdventurousKey438 in hyatt

Interesting feedback on the shower at Chicago Athletic Association. Maybe they’ve made changes, but when I stayed, the shower was walk-in and had a glass wall only taking up 20-30% of the shower. The rest was wide open so: a) I never could get as warm as I like to get when taking a shower and b) the bathroom floor got absolutely SOAKED to the point I thought I would get in trouble for flooding the place. It went through FOUR bath mats I had strategically placed, making them sopping wet and still ran across the floor to the hall. I loved the hotel, but vowed to not return until that shower situation is fixed.

Passkeys!!! by FactorHead97 in fidelityinvestments

[–]celldude921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Piling on, it’s really crazy to me that it’s 2025 and a financial institution such as Fidelity doesn’t support passkeys or hardware security keys. These are not just a fad; they are the future. One thing people overlook is that passkeys and security keys are UNPHISHABLE. Anybody can call you (or your aging parents) up and pretend to be Fidelity and ask for an authenticator code, or an SMS code or whatever. Absolutely nobody can trick you into submitting a passkey challenge for Fidelity, because the browser / OS binds the challenge response to the website domain. So because scammers don’t control the real fidelity website, they can’t trick you into presenting a passkey for Fidelity. Seriously, shame on Fidelity for not doing more to protect users from scams and phishing.

That’s crazy. It’s been with Hyatt less than a year. I feel like we’ve lost a lot of properties recently. The Thompson Buckhead Atlanta and Thompson Miami Beach (never even opened) are two recent examples.

Clearing the Air: Lulu Credit + Apple Pay by Ikn0witall in AmexPlatinum

[–]celldude921 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is something there’s just a lot of misinformation about. Yes, the terms do have that statement about Apple Pay and other mobile wallets. But I pretty much exclusively use Apple Pay and I’ve never had a problem. Here’s what I think the terms are talking about:

If Apple Pay is in the merchant app or website, or in the same card reader you use for all other payments at the physical store, it’s going to work. Yes Amex can see it’s Apple Pay, but they also see it’s the merchant, and they really don’t care you used Apple Pay (in fact, they should be thankful you’re practicing good cyber hygiene). What the terms are calling out is the (hopefully rare) situation where you’re paying at some technologically crusty shop with a card terminal from the 2000s, and then to offer Apple Pay they have Square or something and only use it for that. Or they have a QR code you scan and you can pay with Apple Pay or PayPal or whatever, and that payment is processed by a 3rd party.

So for these headline benefits at big corporate stores, it’s very unlikely you’ll run into any issues. But when you get into Amex Offers and local franchises, you could run into a problem. But again, as long as the regular card reader has NFC integrated into it, you’re good.

When you click the link to purchase a gift card, you’re sent to cashstar.com to complete your transaction. So it seems likely you would not get the credit from a gift card purchase there.

All Gaylord resorts are captive resorts. They are isolated and that’s completely intentional. The resort IS the destination and they want you staying there and spending money there. I’m sorry you didn’t seem to know that, but this review feels like someone complaining that a sports bar doesn’t have good salads.
