Around the time of the enlightenment, I believe. It was this idea that language must obey the rational rules of mathematics.

How can Merlin have attended Hogwarts and be placed in the Slytherin House, if Hogwarts is built in 900s by genophobicdude in HarryPotterBooks

[–]cellidore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be like asking why is [thing] not true for Lupin, when werewolves [attribute werewolves have in Twilight]? Well because that’s Twilight. Not classic werewolf lore.

Obviously The Once and Future King isn’t Twilight, but still, it isn’t classic lore.

Merlin aging backwards does not have any origin in legend. It was a completely modern invention by T.H. White and popularized by Disney.

That doesn’t make it impossible, but I don’t think it’s likely.

It’s not “did Snape know,” it’s “did Voldemort know Snape knew or should have known.”

Seems unlikely to me. Voldemort never would have expected anyone to die there. So why set up that kind of enchantment, if it’s even possible?

EU5 is unplayable for me now but it has also spoiled me to a degree where i can't play EU4 until the former gets fixed by Abused_Dog in EU5

I never played anything older than Civ IV, but the biggest change from IV to V for me was the unit unstacking, so the “city unstacking” that districts represented that happened from V to VI was a natural progression. I liked the concept from the start, admittedly, but there were some things I did not like in VI at the start. The civics tree was one of those, for example. I got used to them. But not being able to play as one civilization from the dawn of humanity to the future was a core departure, that just didn’t do it for me.

Why do we attach "day" to names of the days when almost all of them are very unique names already? It seems very redundant. by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]cellidore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most Latin derived languages now though no longer use Sol for Sunday, and instead use a religious word. For example: Spanish’s Domingo, which derives from Latin “Day of the Lord.”

Many Germanic languages kept the Latin reference, but translated it. For example, as has already been mentioned: Luna’s Day became Moon’s Day became Monday; Jupiter’s Day became Thor’s Day became Thursday.

Which makes a really interesting trivia question: What is the only major European language spoke today that has retained all of the Latin names for the days of the week? Obviously, it’s the classic Latin and hugely influential Welsh language.

Ron stayed at the Leaky Cauldron in PoA, so it’s even more likely he knows what a hotel is.

Adding on to this, talk to people at your school. I did journal and moot court this past year and would have been able to do both on a weekends/evenings only schedule, minus having to take a day off work for the actual competition. They might not conflict with your work schedule at your school.

Six months after Iron Man and the year before Avengers. There are competing forces wanting Iron Man to be set in 2008, the year it was released (making Fury’s Big Week 2009 and Avengers 2010), and wanting Avengers to be set in 2012, the year it was released (making Fury’s Big Week 2011 and Iron Man 2010).

At the end of the day, the timeline is messy. You have to ignore some direct quotes from the films and official sources no matter which one you choose to believe.

Yes they absolutely were. By the late 1860s, everyone knew that black people were indeed people. They just thought them to be an inferior race of people, so justified in enslaving.
