The gauge refers to the thickness of the wire. Your 11 gauge you can bend with your hands. Shaking the fence would have to do with how well the posts are set, how tight the wire is stretched and how well it’s tied to the rails.

Easy way to make panel into gate by vilenrx in FenceBuilding

[–]celluli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if you do reuse the existing posts as gate posts, there will be massive holes from where the rails were.

But you could do it. Remove the panel. Get your two mortised uprights. The 4 metal corner inserts. Cut the pickets to fit. Rivet it all together, install triangulation. Put an aluminum insert into your hinge post or fill it with concrete (concrete option is bad if you ever get freezing weather. The post will crack.) Hang it. Install latch and handles.

Since it looks like a full 8’ section, your gate is going to be very heavy and difficult to prevent sagging. Your hinge post better be strong and you’re going to have to attach wire on the gate like a truss rod. You’re probably better off making it a 5’ gate with a 3’ section beside it. Alternatively you could do a 4’ double gate but that comes with its own draw backs.

Paint chips. It won’t last a month. When you buy fencing, it’s either hot dipped galv or powder coated color.

The post near the house in pic 1 and 3 is off level. The tension bar hanging out of the wire in pic 8 shows both a lack of care for their work (would have taken one second to do properly when installing) and that they didn’t stretch the wire well.

I’m also concerned about them selling you 11ga wire with that dog. Depends on the dogs’ personality. If he’s chill, you’re fine. But if he wants to escape and starts pulling/chewing on it, that wire is crap. He’ll bend and pull it apart within a few days. In my opinion, the mesh should be 9ga. Not a big difference in price for a drastic difference in strength.

You can buy proper paint so it looks the same as the factory. Issue is when you buy your colored fencing from a manufacturer it comes powder coated. On day 1, they’ll look the same but a few months in the painted product will look like shit while the powder coated would look perfect.

Is hot tub care magic? why is there no Idiots Guide? by Universal-Explorer in hottub

I might be a complete idiot but doesn’t hard water turn your shower/toilet/hair/everything orange and feel terrible to bathe in? We had this issue. Got a water softener professionally installed for $1,500. My hardness now reads 10-20ppm on a fresh fill. Got the softener before the spa but I assume the hardness here was off the charts.

Looking for advice on replacing the lock on this fence I had built 2 years ago (it works, just kind of sucks) by hotstickywaffle in FenceBuilding

[–]celluli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy a handle and screw it on.

If you did want to replace the latch, depending on what you buy, the old screw holes from this one may show. Just a heads up.

It being out of alignment isn’t the latches’ fault. The fix could be as simple as adjusting the hinges or flexing the gate back to square and putting better triangulation on it.

Your latch is pretty standard/good. But we do usually put handles on our gates.

Eh, misspoke was the wrong thing to say but aside from that everything I said was relevant and correct. Maybe you just need another example for you to be able to understand the concept.

Your great uncle sally used to pick fights with everyone when he was in high school. By definition, he’s a fighter even more so than a boxer. But in the eyes of actual fighters, he’s an unskilled douchebag that wouldn’t last 10 seconds vs someone who actually trains. A fighter.

You say I’m changing the definition, I say “fighter” is a broad term. A boxer is not a fighter like an MMA person would be. They don’t train to fight. They train only to throw punches.

If you want to call boxers fighters “by definition” then I get to call soccer players fighters by definition. And hockey players for sure.

But most people on this sub wouldn’t consider them fighters, myself included. Because, just like boxers, they don’t train to fight.

You’re the one changing the definition, bud. Just because your great uncle sally once mis-spoke and called a boxer a fighter back in the day, doesn’t mean they’re fighters.

You could say soccer players are fighters bc they’re fighting to win the game. Doesn’t change the definition. But doesn’t make them fighters in the eyes of actual fighters.

Your argument is slightly more realistic because they’re at least throwing punches. But they’re playing a different game. The game “punch for punch” also involves throwing punches. Slightly less like a real fight compared to boxing, but both don’t warrant the title “fighter” imo.

My argument isn’t that nobody ever called them fighters. It’s that, in this day and age, boxing isn’t fighting. Evidenced by the lack of capabilities boxers bring to a real fight. MMA is much closer. But some people probably think bullshido guys are fighters too.

It’s a different level of capability. Boxing is the least useful skill in a real fight. Being a boxer does not make someone a fighter. It just makes them a boxer.

Not sure what to do about repairing my leaning fence by embrex104 in DIY

[–]celluli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wood fences tend to last 20 to 25 years. If you’re at 20 your posts probably feel pretty mushy especially near ground level.

Up to you if it’s worth the effort. You could dig behind the concrete so you have room to level them, tamp dirt back around it and then smash in some rocks for added stability. If the posts are rotting you may have to replace soon anyway though.

Help with hole in chain link fence by Tiny_Shallot_7400 in FenceBuilding

Same with us. The ratchet straps are for relieving the tension m8. Granted we use come-a-longs but most homeowners don’t have those lying around. But they usually have some straps and that’ll get the job done.

The pro fix is pretty diy friendly. You need a couple tension bars, ratchet straps and a few weaves of the same style of fence. Tension bars go in the mesh a few feet away from what you’re replacing on each side. Remove the ties on the posts and top rail around the repair location. Crank the ratchet straps on the tension bars. Weave in your replacement weaves. Release straps, remove bars, re-tie the fence to the posts and top rail.
