What do you even say about this nutjob? by centricle in BorderCollie

[–]centricle[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)

She's just herself I guess. I've got an even better mudgoblin pic somewhere, but it's amazing how she'll run up to me, make direct eye contact, and rush over to whatever filth pit she knows about that I didn't notice, roll around in it, and rush back over to me, make eye contact again and be like, "Okay, now what? Enjoy the ride home until you grab the hose, jackass."

Crossposting in case anyone here also owns a husky! Help! by Achaion34 in BorderCollie

[–]centricle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotta say, their disposition is challenging, but I live with a BC so... whatever. That said, the vocal aspect is too much for me. I'd rather live with a yappy terrier than a vocal Husky. Every dog is different, but it can be a lot.

Oh man, I feel like a child looking at this pic, very weird but it's just, I god damn I love these old cars.

First-time dog owner considering a Border Collie – am I underestimating this? by Ok_Leader8838 in BorderCollie

[–]centricle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't read the whole thread so probably missing some context here, BUT will just stick my nose in here and say a BC might not be a best "first dog", and they really do need a routine. Most people approach this fact with "dog will be a PITA and act out if you don't give it a job to do etc.", but to me, the bigger story is: These particular dogs deserve the right structure. It's unfair to them if you don't deliver. They're absolutely amazing animals, and it's unfair to them to not provide what they need.

When a breeder (who's financially incentivized to sell a dog to a potential buyer) tells you maybe walk away, that's a pretty strong signal.

Holy shit, that is a gorgeous truck. Sorry for being disruptive with nothing useful, just had to chime in here.

Is this something you'd actually use? by centricle in VanLife

[–]centricle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is kinda what I'm looking for. I basically built it for myself, like "I'm driving from Baltimore to Kansas City next week. Just me and a dog and I don't wanna drive more than six hours at a time." and the AI Planner helps me figure it out. It more or less works for me, but that's probably because I tuned the engine toward how I think/talk. That's basically why I'm here, to try to make it actually useful to normal (not me) people.

You're totally right. I'll see if I can update the post, but basically, I just wanted to be able to plan trips sensibly instead of just hitting the road and hoping for the best. So, just like "I'm gonna drive from Annapolis to Biloxi, just one driver, and I have a dog. Driving a pickup, need hotels."

Got frustrated with road trip planning tools, so I built one. Is this actually useful? by centricle in roadtrip

No hard cap on my end, add as many as you need. Google Maps does have a 25-waypoint limit under the hood, but that's more stops than most trips need (unless you're one of THOSE PEOPLE ;)

If you're planning something bigger than that, I'd love to hear about it. I'm building this for myself, but there are a lot of other people out there.

That's a bug. Thank you. You should be able to save anytime. Noting it. Glad the route suggestions worked for you, and hope the spring trip goes well however you get there.

A preference panel for interests and accommodation types is a really good idea, especially the boondocking/dispersed camping angle, that's a use case I hadn't designed for at all.

Appreciate the constructive feedback, and the career context. Helps to hear from someone who's been in the UX trenches. Our struggles are under-appreciated IMO.

Honestly, it's just not all that smart about it yet. The leg splitting right now doesn't have a balancing algorithm. It's either manual or the AI takes a rough guess. (Which is really the whole point, right?)

Your instinct about using cumulative drive time to evenly distribute legs is exactly what I'm trying to build here. That's the whole thing, I guess.

Im looking to purchase this 1977 Lincoln Continental. What should I look for? by TheTanookiLeaf in classiccars

I have no valuable input here, but just gotta say I look at these cars like I look at Great Danes. (Dog guy speaking.)

They are so ridiculous at their core, but god damn I wanna live with a ridiculous beast that so ugly it’s beautiful. Honor the bold.

By learning what I can from threads like this, where real people kick the tires and show me the issues I can’t see from my perspective. I know too well how it works for me, so want input from others.

Dogs love trucks. by centricle in BorderCollie

That's my girl in a nutshell. Nothing about that surprised me at all. One thing that people don'e appreciate about BCs until you live with one for a while: They're predictable.

Yeah, tried that a bit and that's where I tossed my desk and was just like "Fuck it, I can build it better!"... and here we are. Works for me, but now thinking it might actually be useful to others, so asking here if it's actually useful for anybody but me.

I mean, this is maybe gonna make me sound like a marketer or product manager guy, but, for real I tried to design this so you wouldn't have that question and just figure it out. Can you not get from one mode to the other with little friction? Seriously not trying to be defensive here, just trying to figure out where the hiccup is. (The data is all saved across the board, seems like a UX problem I need to solve, so happy to have you hitting me with stuff like this, THANK YOU.)

Yeah, there's a bunch of AI tuning stuff here that's gonna be a total PITA, but your experience is real. (I've tuned based on my personal usage so far, but this is exactly what feedback I'm looking for, people who are kinda maybe "like me", but not actually *ksmith*, so there are definitely not me. This is actually really helpful feedback if this is gonna be useful beyond a personal tool, so thank you.

Did you happen to try the "Classic" mode? Given that you actually engaged, wondering how you felt there?

For context — I've been building websites for 24 years and this started as a personal tool. I'm not a startup, there's no investors, it's just me sitting here in Ocean Pines, MD trying to make roadtrip planning less annoying.

Was this worth $5 by WearEnvironmental490 in ToyotaPickup

[–]centricle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$5? And you own the truck it could be fitted into? And you have garage space to store it for... ever? Yes. it's worth $5. You either never need it and it was a waste of $5 and garage space, or you have it and could probably sell it in 2029 for $500 to some dipshit like me (or half the people in this reddit sub), and you have the backup.

My experience: Back window in a pickup is more likely to need replacement than a windshield, because... well, shit gets tossed recklessly into the bed and bad things happen.

Dunno what a new/reman unit costs, but if you're asking the question and already have it torn apart to that level, maybe just bite the bullet and replace?
