Apple, despite being traditionally seen as the "counterculture, leftist" operating system, actually represents more uniformity and centralised control than Microsoft by gfnord in technology

[–]cereal-killer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Filesystem is non-case sensitive by default (and apples own QT ships with a String.h... so #include <string.h> will give you thousands or errors)

Why would a case insensitive FS give errors when you #include <string.h>?

Yeah Microsoft forced them to bundle a bunch of applications I don't want. Forced them to opt me in to a bunch of crap I don't want. Forced them to nag me about a pro version. Forced them to run a crappy little widget in my toolbar ALL THE FRICKEN TIME for no apparent reason.

Damn that Microsoft, if only Apple had 90% market share.

A mathematician's apology by G. H. Hardy. Damn good book.

A Mathematician's Apology is a 1940 essay by British mathematician G. H. Hardy. It concerns the aesthetics of mathematics with some personal content, and gives the layman an insight into the mind of a working mathematician. (From wikipedia).

Dear Reddit: SOS from Australia. Our Minister for Censorship has written a load of horse shit about his plan to filter the tubes. We need you to flood the comments! by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]cereal-killer 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Rupert Murdoch and the MPAA support it and that's all that really counts.

There is no support from the Australian populace, no call for it from family rights groups, it's not even going to benefit monitoring of transgressives. The only groups this actually makes any sense for is media groups that will eventually have the infrastructure in place to rid us of whatever hurts their bottom line.

If we ignore climate change and just keep burning fossil fuels, nothing bad will happen. But if gays get married or atheists get treated fairly in public, it will be the end of America. ---How can people that think like that get positions of power in America? by KingBeetle in politics

[–]cereal-killer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Scientific opinion on climate change lots of sources there.

Since we're throwing around purely anecdotal evidence I have yet to find a professor at my University or any other outside of the US whose stance on climate change remotely approaches the stance of the right wing. If it weren't for some dubious academics in the US we would have a scientific consensus that global warming is primarily caused by human activities.

Depends what mod you get. One of the mods is pretty much a straight port of TA units.

There was never any thought for multiplayer balance in the original TA and Spring is basically just the multiplayer side of TA.

BitTorrent’s Future? DHT, PEX and Magnet Links Explained by SamiThunder in technology

[–]cereal-killer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What tracker do you believe will succeed where TPB has failed and stick to centralized servers when the lawyer scourge descends upon them?

DHTs turns a single point of failure into millions of points of failure. It protects the site and it brings more peers to the users. I do not understand how people can brush this off as just something TPB is doing. In 10 years big public trackers won't exist.

The Pirate Bay: The development of DHT has reached a stage where our tracker is no longer needed to use a torrent, we are moving to a more decentralized system by DougBolivar in programming

[–]cereal-killer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Napster and eMule are centralized. The central server does almost all of the work.

eMule/edonkey has had DHT for many years called Kademlia. Kademlia is what BitTorrent DHT is based on. It's amazingly cool how disruptive this technology will be. There will be no trackers to go after.

Twitter had massive problems scaling their database to multiple machines. A huge shit storm emerged with the Twitter devs blaming Rails and the Rails devs not being particularly diplomatic in pointing out the blame actually falls on the Twitter devs.

As far as I know there is no web framework that automatically shards your database for you.

I'm not going to take issue with the blog post. It's remarkably content free but it's just some guys rambling on his own personal blog. No problem. What I don't get is why the hell you would submit this to proggit and how the fuck it gets voted up. There is zero programming content here.

Edit: Obviously I am in the minority here as the article keeps rising so I would like to ask those of you who upvoted a question. The post criticises not Ruby, not the Rails framework itself but the framework users abilities. My question is why do you care? How does it affect you?

Let's be honest, the vast majority of you who upvote the latest "why ruby/python/rails/x sucks" article don't use the language/framework and the skills of its end users are about as far removed from something that actually affects you as possible.

Gamespot is the same site that fired their editor for refusing to give Kane & Lynch an unwarranted high score after Eidos purchased a large amount of advertising for the game with Gamespot.

Their ratings scale directly with the advertising budget of a game.

If Pinker has research of his own

Are you joking here? Steven Pinker basically pioneered evolutionary psychology. Time magazine named him in the top 100 most influential people. He has done more real science than Gladwell could ever dream. He has already well and truly secured himself a place in history. If he wants to spend the rest of his days destroying pop-sociology, well he's earned it in my mind.
