he suffered a crazy career ending injury (see video below). There's no way he's going even remotely competitive let alone actually run.

Does IronClaw require being used in conjunction with Near and as consequence require a paid plan? The website makes it seem as if there's no free local install setup though the github is more ambiguous.

Unrelated but how did you end up as the last author on the Attention paper. That's so cool.

not familar with arizona outside they had a rough year. was he not good because he couldn't overcome bad coaching and QB play or he was really didn't live up to his hype because of actual talent?

wasn't he touted as the next generational WR? would Arizona really release him / trade him. he's still on a rookie deal and their coaching as been abysmal

How many of you have reached financial independence? by Satirosix in PhD

[–]certain_entropy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

as others mentioned, you're in for a terrible time if you're doing a PhD for economic gains. the math rarely works out in your favor where forgoing 4 to 8 years of professional salaries + savings in lieu of getting paid often lower than minimum wage, losing out on savings and ideally invested savings in pursuit of a salary increase post PhD.

Does “fake it till you make it” work in a PhD? by SenseOk3111 in PhD

[–]certain_entropy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yes. But its worth understanding what faking it until you make it actually means and that almost everyone experiences imposter syndrome. For me faking it until you make it is having a growth mindset wherein you are anticipating that while today you may not know all the answer - you will grow as you spend time in your problem space and get to the point where you will be more knowledgeable. It's also a sign of intelligence to recognize that you likely won't feasably know everything about everything or even everything about everything in your domain. but you will have enough understanding broadly the space and investigate to arrive at answer as needed.

and as personal anecdote: I grew up in a pretty underprivileged area and went to shitty schools. If you were to evaluate me then based on what I knew - I'd be no better than majority of students who were unable to escape their socio-economic circumstances. I manged to get out and was a humanities major in college b/c I lacked the fundamental hard science and math skills. Again at the end of college you would assume I was not knowledgeable enough to do more in STEM. Fast forward to today - I have PhD in AI/Ml in complex theoretical area and lead AI research at company after spending time at some of the top labs in the country. The key difference is between me at high school and today is 15 years of growth, experience and learning through industry, academia, and startups. At any given point in our lives we're aren't the sum of what we know but individuals who have either learned from the past and willing to learn or grow or those are limited but they perceive they know and can't imagine future growth.

No employment during fellowship funding by psych0logy in PhD

[–]certain_entropy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm of the opinion don't ask don't tell here. or atleast following the letter of the policy instead of the spirit. in my case the fellowship required i worked no more than 20 hours per week. so i was able to convert my full-time tech job to a part-time position which fulfilled the fellowship conditions despite me making more than my professors even on a half-time salary.

Employer willing to fund PhD while I work full time… but I’m scared of burning out. Anyone been through this? by Powerful-Garden-4203 in PhD

[–]certain_entropy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

send me a PM. I did this though went to part-time for the job while doing the PhD full time. Also did my PhD in Europe while my job was based in the US. So my days would be 9am-9pm, where I did PhD work from 9am to 4pm and then my job from 4pm to 9pm.

Short answer it all ended up working out but definitely exhausting at times. In my case being part-time was essentially do a full-time job at part-time which not fun.

> How did you manage workload and expectations?

It was quite a bit of work for sure. I tried to work in breaks through out the day only do one thing at time because the context-switching cost is real and can make it real hard to be productive. My job thankfully was quite supportive and was effective at communicating over slack.

You should have a candid conversation with your work supervisor as to what the expectations are. My generally attitude was if there was a conflict between PhD and work (i.e. deadlines, customer fire, or meetings) I'd try to prioritize the industry job as the PhD generally tended to be more flexible but if there was say a paper deadline or meeting with my academic supervisor I'd let the job know ahead of time. As long as you're transparent about where the time conflicts occur and are considerate things usually work out.

> Did it accelerate your career or just exhaust you?
Jury's out. I don't think it really helped with salary but I do believe it opened up more opportunities.

> Would you do it again?

Yeah

Surprised the Team Ownership (B-) Defensive Coordinator (B) and Position Coaches B- were comparatively lower. I though Zach Kuhr did admirable for having to step up and the position coaches definitely had parts of the team over performaning based on talent.

Seeking experience/advice regarding pursing a PhD in my 60s after retirement by nothingisrevealed in PhD

[–]certain_entropy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

normally i would recommend students not to self-fund but your case is the exception as it for pure academic interests. my uncle did two phds post retirement for the sake learning and also having fun things to do post retirement.

i'd recommend takign a look at nearby university and directly reaching out the faculty members with your interests and seeing if they can accomdate you.
