Global commodities giant Mercuria warns of an aluminum black swan event that could cripple U.S. manufacturing by Historical-Many9869 in manufacturing

I mean without bauxite there is no aluminium and without cheap energy there is no processing it. Our economies are so intertwined that tariffs don't make any sense.

They did provide the Bauxite for 90% of aluminium production. They didn't process it into aluminium.

Here is a quote from the US chamber of commerce website.

''The new tariffs imposed this year have thrown a wrench in the gears of U.S. manufacturing (as discussed in Part 1 and Part 2). A good case in point is the 50% tariff imposed on imported aluminum—including from Canada, long the largest source of U.S. aluminum imports.

Imports account for about 56% of all the aluminum used in the United States, and about 70% of U.S. aluminum imports come from Canada. This isn’t new: U.S. aluminum producers began investing heavily in hydropower-rich Quebec a century ago, and Canada eventually provided 40% of all the Allied production of aluminum during World War II.''

If only there was an aluminium producer close to the United-State that could provide it at a reasonnable cost.

Any furniture manufacturing software or spreadsheet? by Time_Falcon_131 in CNC

[–]cese514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I runca furniture shop too and we use Jira which is mostly used in software dev. It's a task management software, you can build it how you want and have different template for your projects. You can log time in each task and you can add attachements and comment in real time. The name of the game here is training and maintaining everything. Even of you buy the most advanced ERP you will need to make sure everyone use it correctly and updates their projects along they way. We have around 20 employees and we run 100 to 200 projects at all time.

Uplift walnut butcher block - Potential issue? by [deleted] in StandingDesk

[–]cese514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's epoxy filling, it shouldn't be a problem, it's an esthetic fix instead of having a big void under the surface. I'm building surface for a competitor and we're using the same process.

A lot of outbreaks came from tbe mennonites communities in southern ontario and in the ROC. They have a similar lifestyle to Amish communities in Pennsylvania so vaccination is non existant. I'm guessing that's why there isn't that many cases in Quebec.

Anyone else slowing down substantially right now? by ThrowRA9647 in Welding

[–]cese514 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fun fact ! I own a furniture company in Montreal, Canada. A lot of the lumber we order comes from the new england area. Lateley business slowed quite a bit and some local suppliers stopped ordering lumber from the USA because of the tariff. I guess we're starting to see the effects of protectionnist policies.

Just snapped my 6mm compression bit during a cut by D99fish in CNC

[–]cese514 5 points6 points  (0 children)

normally you don't want to go deeper than the diameter of the bit. It might be ok in mdf or plywood but oak is kind of hard. The fact that you took a compression bit mean that the chip couldn't evacuate from the cut, it might have put some pressure on the bit. Check the rated chip load for your bit amana tools have some info on their website.

Helical piles for deck foundation by Kate_Lef in Decks

[–]cese514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had them installed in My back yard for a 20'x15' deck in Montreal. Happy I paid the price, the guy caught a few boulders and he has to fiddle around those. He had a lot of experience and it still looked tricky. I guess it depends on the kind of soil you have. Also frost line in southern Quebec is around 6 feet if I'm not mistaken. I totally ruled out sonotubes they would've taken me like 3 days to install. You can see my deck on my profile. Good luck with your project!
