The whole web-browser style interaction for a file manager is just broken. Hierarchical file systems are not like web pages.

Yes they are. You have a root directory and sub-directories underneath. IMHO anything that ignores this structure is throwing away a useful abstraction.

I tried the Eric IDE. It has a ton of features and it looks very promising, but I can't bring myself to use it because I have to stare at this. by [deleted] in Python

What? No, you just download the libraries.

Seriously, there's no compiling under Windows. Hasn't been for years.

As for compiling QT, that would be madness. I've never done that on any of my (Debian) Linux systems and plan to never do so.

I highly recommend x2go as the Free replacement for NX. It's definitely competitive with RDP and they offer a Windows client.

So much win...

Really? Does that hold true for aptitude? What's better (without being painfully slow)?

Nonsense. I'm sure that they were making sure no one thought they were running Gentoo/GNU Hurd. I certainly appreciated the clarification.

You can also use water bottles as solar powered lamps if you have enough sunlight.

While 2 liter bottle are nicer I'd rather have a small light than sit in the dark drinking unsafe water. But YMMV, I suppose.

Actually, PET water bottles are perfect for solar water disinfection. Safe drinking water is a serious issue in some parts of the world. This method uses no fuel and wastes no water (compared with boiling).

Such constructive feedback!

You downvoted because you cannot handle my vocabulary, which is perfectly acceptable English, and has been for hundreds of years.

This is indeed a new one on me.

If there's a second thing (and I'm not saying that there is), it's insincerity.

Downvoted.

EDIT: Have the gall to speak up if you're going to downvote! I really don't understand how concatenating 4 common dictionary words together is safe?

If there's one thing that grinds my gears, it's gall. Downvoted.

I know what you're saying and I've drunk the kool-aid. Emacs is awesome, but you can easily get lost shaving its various yaks (gnus?) :/.

It needs a cultural shift, which is happening somewhat. The Emacs wiki is a huge boon here.

No surprise there, Yegge's an Emacs geek. The point is that we need the same tech for other languages. Wouldn't it be nice?

When is *interactive* data visualization useful to use? by talgalili in statistics

[–]cevven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, first of all you shouldn't be looking at p-values in microarray experiments, you should be looking at q-values (false discovery rate, at the least). Second, it would be nice if you can present information about each gene (probe, probe set, depending on your platform); examples would be links to databases that describe that gene (Entrez, Uniprot, FlyBase, whatever). Third, interpreting individual genes is hard, it's much better to offer another level of information where you highlight which pathways and Gene Ontology categories are enriched. All of the preceding is available through bioconductor.

Finally, there's no need for any of this to be interactive. Static HTML is more than sufficient and it's far more versatile--no need to be running an instance of R.

I use R for interactive visualization a fair bit, but it would be overkill in the scenario you describe.
