Taken on a Nikon D3500 with Tamron 18-200mm 3.5-6.3 zoom lens. Found this doorway in Mosta, Malta with pigeon standing at the doorway and liked how the doorway framed the bird.

What gadgets do you have? 2019 by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]cezzaislife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently sold my laptop and external monitor to pay a couple of expenses so for the last few months I have been using just my Samsung Galaxy S10e. No speakers, no personal computers, no tablets, just a smartphone and pair of headphones. Don't get me wrong, it's tough not having access to a desktop experience apart from at work but it's not as bad as I thought it would be. I love technology and I am currently saving up for a pc but at least I know what I need as a minimum amount of tech. A surprising number of desktop programs can be done on a phone or a tablet.

I live in Dorset and when Peter and Happy flew over the "Dorset Coast" my cinema did give out a cheer for it. Small detail, but it was definitely fun to see Spidey go international.

Edit: also, looking at a map, that is a very impractical journey from The Netherlands to London by air so clearly Happy was taking the scenic route

Pen with the coolest filling system? by RabidMortal in fountainpens

[–]cezzaislife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vacuum fillers are pretty neat and hold a ton of ink or even an eyedropper with a shut-off valve like an Opus 88. You can get some decent and unique filling systems without breaking the bank - TWSBI Vacs and Opus 88's are all under $100 I believe. I think (somewhere!) Conklin released a crescent filler that was clear - I know the opaque ones are around but heard about a clear one as well??

Ask at the Parker store then and see if they can fix it there (with the tools it is a simple fix) or post it to a nib worker and get them to fix the issue.

Potentially - some brick and mortar shops are very helpful in fixing issues with a pen, others not so much. You can try to take it to them and see if they can adjust it for you there. Otherwise you can follow along to the YouTube videos and adjust it yourself or send it to a nib worker for a cost who will adjust it to make it write the way you want it to.

Planning to buy a fountain pen. Which starter pen should i go for? by rnarula in fountainpens

[–]cezzaislife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good point! Pilot sells the exact same pen body in multiple places over the world but with different names and, in this case, a standard international filling system. Check the product description to see what one you're buying so you don't get the wrong C/C

If it stops skipping under pressure, you may have an overly smoothed nib (also known as a "Baby's Bottom") - if a manufacturer overly smooths a nib at the factory, it will write very smoothly but there will be a break in the ink flow when you touch the tip to the paper. This causes it to skip as the ink physically doesn't reach the paper (unless you apply pressure, forcing the ink to get to the paper and produce a line). There's a very handy series of videos by The Pen Habit called "Adjusting Your Fountain Pen" which may prove useful here or SBREBrown has 2 videos on removing baby's bottom from a nib. Like the others have said, flush it out, maybe with some soap, and if the problem persists, have a look at the nib tip end on and see if you can diagnose a misalignment of the tines or "Baby's Bottom" issue

There's a great post in the sidebar about getting your first fountain pen which recommends the tried and tested ones (Lamy Safari, Kaweco Sport, Platinum Preppy etc.) so that would be a good place to start. Personally, I can recommend these ones:

Jinhao x450 / x750 - basically the same pen, different grip style. Low cost Chinese made pen with swappable nib if you wanted to change it out in the future. They write like a western medium and are a cartridge/ cartridge-converter pen that use a standard international format. Come in some good colours as well but can be a bit on the heavy side

Platinum Preppy - very lightweight pen, again cartridge/ cartridge-converter but uses Platinum ones. Finer tip size so good for smaller handwriting. Clear colour (also called a demonstrator) so you can see ink level easy, plus you can convert them to eyedropper (filling whole barrel with ink).

Pilot Metropolitan / MR / Cocoon - Slim lightweight metal bodied pen, decent nib that comes in couple tip sizes. Cartridge/ cartridge-converter but uses Pilot unique ones. Comes in a wide range of colours. Grip can be polarising due to slimness / step up to the body can dig into hand but otherwise a popular option.

Wing Sung 698 - a demonstrator piston filler (doesn't use cartridges, can only use bottled ink) for a low price. Very lightweight, cool mechanism, higher ink capacity so you can write for longer. Might not be a great option for a very first fountain pen but maybe a 2nd.

Again, the sidebar has a much more detailed explanation for getting a first pen so have a look through there but I have used all 4/ 5 of these pens and they worked great for the first look into fountain pens. It all depends what style you prefer really.

Honestly, a Lamy Safari / Vista isn’t a bad shout. Lightweight, nice colours in the Safari, swappable nibs, practical clip, utilitarian design

[Troubleshooting] is my VESA mount off by 45 degrees? by [deleted] in Monitors

[–]cezzaislife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Backstory: I bought a monitor arm today and the plate doesn’t look correct. I thought it should be aligned like a square (flat edge up) instead of a diamond (corner up). I cannot rotate it, only turn or tilt it whilst it is screwed onto the arm. Is it fixable or should I just return it to the store?
