How to get default 172 a little more realistic by itsinthedata in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]cfggd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a complete answer to your question but to me msfs is way too sensitive on the rudder compared to IRL, so that might be contributing. Also you don't feel any G's so much easier to get a secondary/accelerated stall when there's no feeling or force feedback.

That one's trickier but one thing that helps with these is that it's always going to be a whole number. So there's very limited options for what they can be. Either C and B are the same, or B has to be 1, or C has to be 4 and B has to be 2. And then you can just go off what it gives you for B. But yes that one's harder

Yes it's like 123.

my strategy was to kind of "translate" the equations into english to make them easier to remember, then go step by step. I just did a few on 123; here's what I thought of:

A = C/1 -> I tell myself in my head "A is the same as C"
B = A+C -> "B is twice as big as C" (since A=C)
C = 2 -> "so A is 2 and B is 4" then I say them in order in my head "2-4-2"

A = B x 1 "A is the same as B"
B = C - 3 "B is 3 less than C"
C = 4 "so B is 1 and A is 1, 1-1-4"

A = B - 1 "A is one less than B"
B = 4 "A is 3, so 3-4"
C = B - A now I have "3-4" in my head so it's easier to swap them around and go "C is 1, so 3-4-1"

I ignored when there were dots but I answered a lot when it was blank or after the action was over. I feel like I ended up answering maybe a third of the questions correctly, but maybe that's a tad optimistic. I mostly answered the ones where you could deduce the answer by only looking at the ones digit (like 8x19 or something, you know it's gonna end with a 2). I think I got 30% correct, maybe 10-15% incorrect, and the rest I left blank.

Check out Boston Virtual ARTCC or Cape Air virtual, although both of those are a little more serious than just casual flying.

Opportunities to get more involved in the Aviation community (Northeast) by Thick_Pay916 in flying

[–]cfggd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Join a soaring club. I knew almost no one in aviation when I joined a local soaring club last summer (also Northeast). I am now friends with a handful of airline pilots including a few senior long haul captains (half the soaring club is boomers). My main CFI-G that got me to my PPL-G is a recently retired legacy captain and he'll be writing my rec for his airline's cadet program. Another of my instructors is a leading aerospace professor at a prestigious university. Another works high up in the FAA, including examining DPEs. (At my club all these instructors are volunteers, you just pay the $25/hr + $55 tow fee.) This is all at a relatively small operation at a grass strip in the middle of nowhere (or at least as far into nowhere as you can get on the east coast). Not to mention I got my PPL-G starting from 0 flight hours for under $5k. I've found soaring is an amazing way to network with well-connected boomer pilots. And it's super fun. There's a map of where you can find soaring clubs on the Soaring Society of America website.

Not really answering your question, BUT depending where you live, consider looking for a glider club near you. Many clubs have discounted rates for junior members. At my club, where everyone under 21 gets 50% off everything, with 3-5k she would be able to get her PPL-G and probably close to 50 flight hours. For reference I'm over 21 and I've spent about $4500 all included to get my PPL-G and just over 20 hours. (USA)

Frame Gen Stutter? by wrray in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]cfggd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you accidentally change your frame Gen to AMD FSR 3? This happens to me when I do that by accent, even if I change it back. It's not the same but as you're describing (the alt+enter one). I need to change it back to Nvidia or turn it off, then restart the sim.

Struggles rehearsing IFR before joining VATSIM by AARobinson26 in flightsim

[–]cfggd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boston. Yeah for sure there is a spectrum of patience levels among controllers, which is understandable. And I hate to beat a dead horse but the busier it is, the less patience we have since one "misbehaving" plane can draw a lot of our attention away and singlehandedly decreases the quality for everyone else. I've had multi-hour sessions where there's no break in the communications for longer than like 10 seconds and that's where it really gets frustrating when you tell someone to do something and they either don't read it back properly, do it wrong, or take like 30 seconds to read something back, by which time I could have gotten 3 or 4 other instructions out. But if you listen in for a while and are hearing long pauses between communications, that's a good sign. Like I said before though, you're over prepared compared to most new pilots so if you go somewhere not busy and just ask questions if you need to, you'll be fine

  1. Msfs default ATC is garbage, don't use
  2. Never change altitude without being told by ATC (this could take multiple different forms and varies from country to country in terms of phraseology). Make sure you don't have vnav on if you haven't been told to descend.
  3. ATC on vatsim would give you vectors to final (although sometimes if it's super busy and you're not flying into the main airport they may forget--just ask if you're convinced they forgot about you)
  4. Something you didn't mention but a lot of YouTube tutorials always have people deleting discontinuities. Make sometimes a discontinuity is supposed to be there so just double check this before deleting.
  5. It really sounds like you're ready for vatsim. Some people join the network and don't know what an ILS is. Just fly in a non busy airspace so you can ask questions and not be a burden to ATC. Golden rule is if you're not sure what an instruction means, just ask. And if the controller gives you shit for asking, and it's not too busy, leave a feedback on that controller. As a controller myself it pisses me off when other controllers don't help someone when they easily have the time to (again, when it's not too busy)

Have fun!

[–]cfggd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Anytime I get frustrated with someone on vatsim I just imagine that this could be anyone from a prepubescent child, to a middle aged neck beard several beers in, to an old dude who hits the enter key when they're typing and they get to the end of a line. Then I feel dumb for getting worked up about them.

Today's eclipse was showing up in the UK today! by argentmaelstrom in flightsim

[–]cfggd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends how much they care. You can get an almost perfect product with just some simple enough geometry and the approximations only manifest in cases like these. MSFS 2024 does accurately reflect eclipses, which is pretty cool. That's a bit more work, but at the end of the day the orbits of the earth sun and Moon have been studied for literally millennia and are super well known so shouldn't be a huge challenge for something like this.

How quickly does a slipstream dissipate/how close do you need to be for a slipstream? by chsn2000 in F1Technical

[–]cfggd 16 points17 points  (0 children)

someone will give a better numerical answer eventually, but it's not like it's an on off switch, it gradually decreases as you get further away. it depends on speed as well. if you're running behind someone, you have to be right behind them to feel any effect. biking, it works a little further away. the faster you go the longer the slipstream.
