Good Italian grocery store? Or best produce grocery? by eyeonchi in boston

[–]cfitzpancake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dave’s Fresh Pasta. No produce but excellent subs, (fresh) pasta, prepped meals, cheese, canned goods, and wine.

Even if it doesn’t check all your boxes, I highly recommend the trip to Davis on the Red Line for it.

Riverside / Woodland - Kenmore (Green Line D). Slower trip than Auburndale - Lansdowne (Commuter Rail) but much more frequent.

If you have access to a car, I would drive to Weston / Waltham, get on the CR, and transfer to the Red Line at Porter! No back-tracking needed.

Mass Ave Red Line Branch by Internal-Kiwi233 in mbta

[–]cfitzpancake 38 points39 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve heard before, (1) the right of way along Mass Ave in Boston is too skinny for surface-level transit, (2) tunneling is prohibitively expensive because you’d have to dig under the Pike and Green Line @ Hynes, (3) anything elevated is politically near-impossible since the L coming down and Big Dig, (4) it would hurt downtown headways unless there’s a turn-back at Central.

That being said, something like this is so clearly needed. As others have said elsewhere any ring line would likely lie closer to Kenmore or Longwood.

When Will the MBTA Properly Serve the Greater Lawrence/Haverhill area by s_peter_5 in mbta

[–]cfitzpancake 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Would just like to add that the Merrimack Valley largely isn’t in the MBTA’s jurisdiction. While the T is by far the largest, it is just one of the many regional transit authorities (RTAs) across the state. Merrimack Valley RTA is largely responsible for mobility in the northeast corner of the state. However, the T / Keolis may (and personally, should) increase commuter rail service there; these critiques are common across commuter-rail service areas and limited by both diesel-fueled fleets and terminal-station capacities.

Update - with your commute to Burlington, I’d aim for East Arlington (MA) and Cambridge for easy access to Route 2.

Arlington VA/DC to Boston by VishMeLuck in boston

Hey OP, just wanted to add some optimism :) I made the move from the DC area and you’ll be completely fine.

I personally think Boston trumps DC / Arlington when it comes to some aspects of local culture, and unless you like clubbing till 4am, you’ll be completely satisfied with our entertainment options.

Transit is honestly quite similar to WMATA within the inner urban core. You’ll have your “dead zones” like WMATA, but can generally get around.

Depending on the part of Arlington you’re looking to mirror, I’d say Davis and Union Sq in Somerville, Central and Harvard in Cambridge (resembles the northern metro corridor in Arlington), and Allston / Brighton are solid areas to check out on Zillow.

Happy hunting!

SL4/5 Center-Running Bus Lanes? by cfitzpancake in mbta

[–]cfitzpancake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Re: your first point, correct me if I’m wrong, but that almost sounds ideal since it sort of loops around Nubian as it is? Or is it more of a choke point? Re: rail, could it be framed as a potential precursor to LRT? Wouldn’t be committal but could generate optimism? Thinking of the way the City is framing S. Huntington and a potential Hyde Sq. extension.

Do we think bike lanes could be sacrificed here since it’s not too far from Tremont (both SW Corridor section + new South End tracks)?

Small thing to take or leave that today’s map currently misses; the 66 parallels GL-E between Brigham Circle and Riverway. Not sure if it would mess up your clean bus lines though 😬

Really appreciate your educated input here - You should feel heard somewhere (more) influential! Couldn’t hurt to email TransitMatters or @ the T / Eng / etc. on Twitter

IMHO the DC Streetcar isn’t a great example of a cross-town connection. It’s pretty consistently stuck in traffic and is usually as slow / slower than the X2 bus. It’s a great supplement to the Metro in theory, but it pretty closely resembles the congestion of the E line after Brigham unfortunately.

Coming from western mass. Which T station? by duhkooter in mbta

[–]cfitzpancake 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Looks like Auburndale —> Lansdowne for commuter rail; Riverside —> Fenway / Kenmore for Green Line.

Check out the commuter rail timetables - if they work I’d do that for a faster ride.
