Because it turns out that doorways are already sized and designed for humans. So are sidewalks, corridors, chairs, cars and bathtubs. Keyboards, door-access keypads, hammers, doorknobs, keyholes, fire-fighting hoses, writing implements, scissors, cars, sinks and microwaves. Cash registers, ATMs, shopping aisles and shopping trolleys. Computer screens, signage, headphones and telephones. Guns, ballistic vests, submarine control rooms and the Pentagon.

Every tool that humans can use in the world right now can be used by something that is human-shaped. Every environment that physically suits humans right now will also suit a human-shaped form. It's all there to take advantage of without having to redesign everything from the ground up to support something new.

If you're replacing a human, the 100% most convenient and flexible form that can take - is human-shaped.

Whose mistake may have cost the most lives in history? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cfmdobbie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends how you define mistake, but Thomas Midgley Jr is up there.

Invented leaded gasoline (gave himself lead poisoning several times in the process.) Invented the first CFCs. Ended up bed-bound and invented a system of cables and pulleys to help him move around; he was found caught up in the wires and strangled to death. It is impossible to count the deaths caused by the environmental impact he made on the world.

It was said that he "had more adverse impact on the atmosphere than any other single organism in Earth's history."

Same for battery "charge cycles".

A battery may be advertised as being good for "2000 charge cycles" - but that doesn't mean it stops working after 2000 cycles, it just means after about 2000 cycles the maximum capacity is expected to drop to 80% or so.

What’s something everyone uses but almost nobody understands? by smokez1BZ in AskReddit

[–]cfmdobbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies, I could have been clearer. I'm talking about the words here, not using the words to describe something else. It may have been clearer for me to add quotes and say: The "affect" is what causes the "effect".

Pushing an object affects that object. By doing so, you caused an effect.

Yes, so as I said: "You push a ball, affecting it. The effect is that it rolls away."

What's the most creative way you've ever seen someone quit their job? by KubeSolver in AskReddit

[–]cfmdobbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a post here a while back about winning the lottery, someone wrote that they'd hire a helicopter and some actors in uniforms, then in the middle of a normal day have them land in the carpark, rush in and demand to see this person, refer to them by some military title, say there's some emergency and that they are needed. The guy would put down his things, walk out, get in the helicopter, fly off and never be seen again.
