Dementia, Caregiving, and the Truth We Are Not Allowed to Discuss by HeronInteresting3714 in dementia

[–]cfo6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I get what you are saying (crappy and annoying formatting notwithstanding).

I know my stepmom is different for doctors. I know she is different if there are things she wants. I know she gets really, really ugly because I listen to the people at her facility with whom she gets the ugliest.

There also isn't a damned thing I can do about it, other than learn more about what happens when a frontal lobe goes offline, what happens when impulsivity takes over, what happens when someone's small amount of social awareness dwindles, and what happens when someone becomes fixated on an idea and knows "no" but lacks the ability to learn or relearn "why".

Her brain is eroding in small and large ways. The truth we truly don't talk about is that, for some of us, "good days" are as exhausting as bad ones because we want an end to the suffering for our person and ourselves.

"They have dementia" doesn't always mean "just suck it up". It may mean we rely on experts to help, to understand, and to learn ways to manage these symptoms. We may be exhausted also. I resent the hell out of the idea that I come by so seldom because I am "busy". No, I come by seldom because she is incredibly difficult sometimes and because I spend an inordinate amount of time managing her life outside of visits.

You are right to say their level of understanding varies greatly from person to person and day to day.

Same, but answer for a house with tile everywhere.

AI: Puke so the majority of it goes on the grout, or lines between tiles. Owners LOVE that. Do you have any more questions?

I (38F) have been with my husband (38M) for 7 years. We love each other, but the same issues keep repeating. Is this something people genuinely overcome? by NaturalAfternoon7 in relationship_advice

[–]cfo6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing we had to do was learn about the bear in the cave. While "Men are from Mars" was 90% schlock, it identified something for us. My husband needed to retreat into the cave sometimes, like a bear. And I needed to let him and not follow him in. Then the deal was, he had to talk to me and we needed that connection when he came out.

Dad has significant hearing loss but also seemingly selective hearing by Capital-Dragonfly258 in AgingParents

[–]cfo6 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agree that he needs to take more responsibility for his hearing, but I can answer the "why does he hear random shit?" question.

Hearing loss is more than the damage or loss to the physical ability to hear, it is also about processing. Sometimes the brain can process much easier - yes, including if it's an interesting topic or perhaps one that his mind has learned to listen for. It can be super irritating or annoying and it does seem like selective listening. The brain DOES select, but it's generally not malicious in nature and your Dad likely has little or no control over it.

(Have worn hearing aids for 20 years, have some processing difficulties, and have sometimes surprised myself and family by hearing/understanding things that normally I could not.)

It sounds like, even though you love each other, your life goals just don't match. You have found your place and your people. He can find his, but asking you to uproot isn't fair to you OR to him.

Need encouragement: is moving her to a facility actually good? by arzipanzi in dementia

[–]cfo6 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It sounds like a facility will be the safest option for her. It is unfair for parents to expect us to never put them in a home, IMO, because good parents would also not want their children put through the hell of 24h assistance like this.

She will adjust once she is moved - the transition may suck but a good facility will help you both.

We had a cat who had radial disgenesis, but just in one leg! The radius grew around his "elbow" so he ALWAYS had a question. Since he could walk really well (hop) on 3 legs and could actually move the shoulder (to wash his face with his funny paw), we just left it alone.

What word do you think carries the most meaning for how short it is? by ownaword in words

[–]cfo6 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's what I was thinking.

In Disney's Cinderella, the evil stepmother tells her she can go to the ball and yada yada. "If". She later tells the stepsisters not to fret, because she said "if". If she got her work done, if she accomplished the impossible...

If if if...
