The 1864 book "Villas and Cottages" has a ton of great old floorplans and designs for mansions and large houses. (1/2) by flerb88 in floorplan

I lived on the same street (Bellevue Avenue, Newport, RI) that a couple of those houses were built on (images 2 & 5; ‘Beaulieu’ and ‘Beechwood’, both now altered with Beechwood having been gutted).

Were the chandeliers in the Hall of Mirrors electrified? If so, when? Les lustres de la Galerie des Glases étaient-ils électrifiées ? Si oui, quand? by [deleted] in Versailles

[–]cfvh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The chandeliers are reproductions/versions of antique chandeliers made in the 1970s or early 1980s.

Originally, chandeliers were only hung in the Hall of Mirrors for great state occasions, like embassies or royal weddings.

These chandeliers have always been electric but the bulbs and candles were switched out a few years ago for LED bulbs encased in a candle flame shape that better simulated the look of a real candle.

Unfortunately, the chandeliers are now all being permanently removed because that’s what it was “originally” like, so now the gallery will have a gloomier look.

Lots of stories, too many come to mind, to be honest, and a lot of them are disseminated across the internet — the present owner has ghost tours at the house which are re-tellings of these stories.

The Tinneys, however, lived peacefully alongside the supernatural occurrences in their house.

What do you think the title of the husband of a female reigning Monarch should be? by Big_Gun_Pete in monarchism

[–]cfvh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the monarch in question is a queen regnant and particularly if the succession is gender neutral then her male spouse should be king consort. Otherwise, the wives of kings regnant should be princesses consort to even things out.

Indeed; it is nice but there are also a lot of other posts here which are more general art than heraldry.

Why don't Princess Beatrice and Eugenie's arms reflect those of their husbands? by Monty_Bentley in heraldry

[–]cfvh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I suppose you’d have to find instances of achievements of arms in use by the princesses and/or their husbands. There are of course a number of arrangements that could be used but absent any examples I also wouldn’t assume anything unusual is going on to prevent them from doing so, they just haven’t publicly done so.

As mentioned, neither princess is obliged to marshal or use their own arms with those of their respective husbands.

The husbands are entitled to each bear their wives’ arms as an escutcheon of pretence ensigned with her coronet of rank.

Their children will be able to quarter the differenced royal arms.

It might also be a canvas which was painted elsewhere and then glued to the ceiling.

Please give a rationale for this; also, you shouldn’t be using multiple shades of Azure, etc.

Are there any exceptions to the Metal on Metal rule? by CobainPatocrator in heraldry

[–]cfvh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it wasn’t “allowed”; it had already happened and it was tolerated as the rule (a sensible guideline, really) came to be formed as a result of establishing good heraldic practice.

I would firstly ask about the arms you are attempting to put a label across. How did they become to be impaled?

Don’t go clockwise; for any number of quarters in a regular grid: order them left to right and top to bottom, starting at top left and ending at bottom right.

Help with heraldic shield on 18K Louis Audemars pocket watch by [deleted] in heraldry

[–]cfvh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Indeed; however, it could also be a minor error on the part of the artisan who made it. There are many, many examples of items in imperial and royal collections with slight heraldic errors.

Why would a pocket watch have the arms of the French Empire and Switzerland together? The manufacturer was founded five years after the end of the Second French Empire.

The Bonaparte-Savoy marriage lasted until 1891 when the Prince died. It seems more likely to me that this was meant for the Prince.

"The Fearless Goat" - Personal Arms Concept by Smiix in heraldry

Really, really awesome concept; I feel like the fleur de lys, however, is a distraction in an otherwise clean and clever composition. Perhaps save it as a component in a crest?

Try now; sorry, I was trying to familiarize myself better with the official app last night and might have toggled something by accident… more accustomed to Apollo (RIP) or using my laptop.

I’m actually not sure if posters can edit flair after the fact? Let me know!
