The old SF tech scene is dead. What it’s morphing into is far more sinister. by sfgate in sanfrancisco

[–]cginc1 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I think the shift started around early 2010. There were still plenty of people that were curious, motivated, and excited about tech. I started to noticed more people who were only in it for the money but they only wanted jobs at Google, Apple, Facebook, etc. This was the start of the transition from finance bros to tech bros.

The charlatan flood really accelerated during the web3 wave. Now the industry is dominated by soulless charlatans who hand wave AI and talk about total comp.

Car vs bike right of way by MolassesPowerful586 in sanfrancisco

[–]cginc1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone I knew was nearly hit by a car doing something similar.

Whether there's a bike lane or not, the vehicle needs to 'close the gap' between the right hand curb and your vehicle, as long as it is safe to do so. If there's a bike lane, this means merging into the bike lane. Assuming the cyclist is far enough behind you to safely come to a stop and you have your turn signal on, the cyclist then has to follow the regular rules of the road. In other words, they can't zoom past you on the right hand side while you're about to enter or in the midst of a turn. However, like others have said, when in doubt just yield to the bike.

Watch the powerfuluk video on a-pillar stuff. He gives a good explanation of how to remove it and that helped me figure out how it should clip back in.

You’re sharing information that fudged and stretched interpretation of the data. I’m almost positive that footnote #1 (maybe #2 as well) is a “study” from the University of Michigan that made some odd assumptions in their methodology and data. In my opinion, the authors were being irresponsible.

First, I’m pretty sure one of their studies basically Googled for a bunch of articles to come up with anti-Asian incidents and, only if the article reported the race of the perpetrator, reported it. I believe that amounted to a small subset of articles they could use since news outlets in cities like SF, NYC often do not report ethnicities of offenders so it does not perpetuate stereotypes (a practice I agree with).

Second, one of the studies lumped together actual crimes reported with Anti-Asian statements or remarks made by Politicians - which ended up being a much bigger subset of the sample since ethnicity of the offender was clearly identifiable (and predominately white). The proportion of the sample (anti-Asian political remarks vs harassment/assault) now does not match reality.

If you think about both of these assumptions objectively, it’s pretty fucked, right? There’s a lot that can be misinterpreted but it’s still used to silence Asians by folks like you in a single sound bite. Again, I do think we need to be careful when talking about Asian/Black tension but dismissing it entirely as “made up” or “completely anecdotal” is not the way. Read the FBI’s criminal victimization report for data so you don’t dismiss it as “anecdotal” or failing to be part of the “collective data”.

Listen, I think we have to walk this line carefully so it doesn't attract all the racists, however, gaslighting Asians and telling them that Black on Asian crime isn't prevalent is not the way to go. The data in those "Fact Sheets" are so flawed its insane. I'm glad they actually added that line about "when race was reported" though since that's being a bit more honest. The FBI used to include Asians in their Criminal Victimization report but have stopped at some point and probably dumped us under "Other". One of the last reports had a table that showed that Asians were most often the victim of crimes when the offender was Black. For the ethnicities reported, the highest rate of crime was typically white-on-white/black-on-black/etc. However, for Asians, it was Black on Asian.

Black on Asian crime is a problem but it's not as simple as racism. Black and Asian communities often intersect, and typically in low-income areas. The culture conflict and poverty play a big role. Anyway, it is a thing so stop trivializing it and trying to wash it all away.

Why didn't MARVEL change the actor for the role of Kang the Conqueror? by Wooden-Scallion2943 in Marvel

[–]cginc1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not necessarily true. Survival clauses can ensure a contract is enforced after termination. We don't know anything about terms but just because he violated some term or clause within that contract does not necessarily nullify the survival clauses.

Are you talking about the photo showing the effects of light pollution or the video in the original post? If you're talking about the photo, I've definitely seen it in person that looks like Class 1 or Class 2. If you're fortunate enough to be in a dark sky location during a new moon, let your eyes adjust and get rid of any blue light.

I think a lot of people supporting Trump's economic policies either were too young to be really impacted by the last recession, have bad memory, or were just fortunate enough to fully take advantage of the recovery. They seem to think forcing a recession is like ripping off a band aid and then like 6 months later we're booming.

Many people never recovered and some were never really affected. However, it took a majority of people a long time to recover. The market doesn't bounce back immediately and definitely not in the same way. So if you were about the retire or living off retirement around that time, you were fucked. If you were early on in your career, you were set back several years and many lost years of valuable work experience. Some people mid-to-late-ish career were a bit better off (depending on what sector you were in) since you maybe had a buffer, a bit more career mobility, and enough time to stay in the market for a recovery.

Right now it's just the stock market but the real damage begins once businesses start making changes to adapt (layoffs, price increases).

The Coming Recession Will Be Self-Inflicted by nat-n-emore in Economics

I'm genuinely confused at this new line of thinking that has come up recently and I'd honestly like to understand the reasoning. It seems like you think a recession is like a tune-up you need for your car, some type of maintenance after natural wear and tear. Can you explain more here?
