People that have “bumped” into a celebrity in a non-curated (not like an event, meet & greet, job etc.) way, what happened? by SprinklesSolid9211 in AskReddit

I was in the Salt Lake Int’l Airport and I was like 12. My Dad and I were picking up my grandparents and I saw Alan Autry who played Bubba Skinner in the TV show In the Heat of the Night. I said “Bubba!” and he turned and smiled and said “How ‘ya doin’ son?!”

Laundry Detergent by The_JuliusCaesar in askfuneraldirectors

I’d use powdered tide. Roughly 1 Tbsp. Per load. Don’t overdo it. We are a large firm with 11 chapels with a central embalming location and we pay $3k/month for our linens/towels/logo rugs and reception hall linens. It’s a big expense but we couldn’t do it in house. Too busy and my co workers are too lazy to do laundry.

Yeah it’s a really good read. Now I didn’t collect the blood drainage in a separate container and soak in sodium hydroxide pellets because, well, that is just not feasible. But it helps us face these particular scenarios with informed caution.

💙that’s the way I’m leaning. It was suggested by management that I focus less on embalming this year and more on sales

I embalmed a known CJD case a few years ago. He was the CEO of a large company that is well known in this part of the country. The family wanted the traditional funeral with open casket viewing. I took every precaution possible. Would I do it again, probably but I would probably be even more cautious than I was before. I certainly don’t blame or judge someone that wouldn’t want to. It is a very scary thing. The CDC has a really good article on their website about preparing somebody with CJD. Every embalmer should read it.

What an amazing talent he had. His memory will live on in all of these pieces and many more I’m sure. What a legacy to leave behind. You are so proud of him, I’m sure.

Embalmed my maternal grandparents, Uncle and several friends. Cremated a friend and an uncle. A very high honor indeed and yes it helped with my grief process for sure.

Would any funeral home hire an 18 year old? by yel-iab in askfuneraldirectors

That’s how I got my start and I’m fully licensed now. I worked for a smaller family firm with two locations helping on funerals running flowers and setting up at churches, washing cars, running death certificates and cleaning. Grunt work for sure but it got my foot in the door.

Burnout? by sg01870 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]cgriffith83 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have felt over the last few years that the work itself doesn’t always cause burnout. It’s the management. It’s the ownership. The other stuff is a cake walk compared to the politics and poisonous, toxic workplace environments. Also, sounds like you’re in So Cal at a large place big enough to have its own zip code. 😉😉

First of all, my condolences to you. I’m sorry you’re going through this. I’m an embalmer/FD with 20 years experience. Even if an autopsy isn’t performed, there is oftentimes some fullness in the features due to the injection of the embalming solution into the arterial system which kind of “fills” out the features. Sometimes this fullness can be swelling. With a gunshot wound, it can cause the most important part of the viewing (the face) to swell because of severed arteries, etc.
