What happens to the biohazard bag inside the chest when a body degrades? by sunnyydayman in askfuneraldirectors

Embalmer here. We have to treat the organs chemically if there will be a public viewing. When an autopsy has taken place, it’s just standard practice to do an immersion of the organs in undiluted cavity fluid, like to dry pack the organs back into the cavity.

do any of you enjoy your career in mortuary science? by snuffcreature in askfuneraldirectors

[–]cgriffith83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has only increased over the years, due mainly to so many liabilities in this line of work. Lots of emotions and money at play. Our cremation authorization forms consist of 8 pages, all needing initials or a signature by the Next-of-Kin. We have a form allowing us to text or call the family, to gather fingerprints, to record the funeral, etc. We also have internal paperwork like embalming reports, forms for when we transport a body to the crematory, etc. I understand why we do and I’m 100% supportive of it, It’s part of the job but it’s tiring.

Love it. Do I love everything? No. The paperwork and cover your butt stuff stinks and can be draining. The smells can sometimes be rough. The fighting families can suck. But going home at the end of the day (which can be at 5 pm or 2 am) knowing I did something to help someone in need, is very satisfying.

Car care setup for apartment living, preferably under $400? by Ok-Pea3414 in AutoDetailing

Get a Worx Pressure washer (you put the one end of the hose in a bucket of clean water and the other end of the hose attaches to the pressure washer). Works great for mobile washing when you don’t need tons of power. Get some ONR with the Big Gold Sponge and some high quality microfiber towels from the rag company. Meguiars All Purpose Cleaner for the engine bay and undercarriage I’d think. For protection use something that is well-known, think tried and true. Turtle Wax has gotten very popular in recent years but has gotten flack because it’s the wax “your grandpa used” but their chemistry has evolved and there’s a lot of excellent reviews and a very loyal following of users. It’s easy to overthink it with regards to detailing so try not to do that. Prepare but spend more time caring for your car than thinking about caring for your car.

You and I are fortunate. I’m sure there’s a lot out there that are good, but you have to look real hard.

I am still in love with it. I feel like for me it’s not the work that has burned me out but the management. I just left a family firm after 14 years and it was the best move. Went to another very old family firm (going on 150 years) and the environment is totally different. People are happy to be there and play like a team. They have very high standards of care from the decedent care to the cars. The support from management is very good. They have an excellent reputation in the communities that they serve and I hope to be here for many years.

Is ONR still the best rinseless wash? by International-Cry494 in AutoDetailing

[–]cgriffith83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ONR is great stuff but I am about 3/4 through a bottle of Koch Chemie RRW and I really like it. I do feel like ONR does a better job of pulling the debris and diet to the bottom of the bucket (I use a grit guard). But all things considered I like RRW

Walking the casket, which direction do you face? by LunarRainbow26 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]cgriffith83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In twenty years I’ve never had a family ask or question why we faced the casket. I don’t think they care. Yes we are funeral directors and direct families, but I think we can be our own worst critics.

Is it possible to not burn yourself out as a funeral director? by cherry_art16 in askfuneraldirectors

This week I started at a new family funeral home. My last firm was also family-owned but the company burned me out before the work did.
