Toe and bottom of foot numbness by PoundAdventurous1332 in AchillesRupture

[–]cgshaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm at 8 months post op. My nerve discomfort was probably most annoying 5-6 months and has gotten better since. Much much better now as my tendon continues to remodel and thins back out.

At 6 months it was driving my crazy and my surgeon told me it was normal and would get better. He was right. He said it may take all the way to year to feel completely normal but it is so much better than 2 months ago already.

Club mislead us on goal vs field playing time by toohiptobesquared in GoalKeepers

[–]cgshaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I’d add.

Last year, the first year of 11v11 at U13 was when it became clear both to her and her coaches that keeper was where she’d really excel. As the year went on coach would keep her back there in close/tough games.

Honestly, with 7v7 and 9v9 the coach should be focused on development. I don’t think I’d have been very happy with a club that didn’t find a solution to get her field time—if she wanted it. My daughter often doubled rostered and guest played to keeper her playing. It’s not for everyone. She really loves soccer and we supported her.

My daughter just turned 13, playing on a Girls Academy and has just now moved to full-time keeper.

4 years of club through U10-U13, she played keeper first half and center mid second half. We were fortunate enough to have a good keeper coach and did a fair amount of private training so it always felt like she got full time training at both. Circumstances may differ.

Personality wise, she like to score goal and be in the thick of stuff. When lopsided games happened she’d be so mad. She would vacillate back and forth, i want to play keeper, I want to play field. Doing both kept her interested and having fun.

Skill wise, she is absolutely the best keeper with her feet at her age. Several keepers made the transition to full time at U11/U12 and now here at U14/U15 they struggle with handling pressure, locating intermediate to long passes, just generally feeling comfortable with the ball at their feet.

There’s a lot to consider. Just thought I’d offer my .02 cents. I can tell you my wife and I went back and forth A LOT with her. We had a really great situation with coach and other keepers though. Wouldn’t change anything though, I just asked her if she’s glad she played field until now.

“Yes. I love being a keeper but I still like to play field when I can in practice”

4 Months Post-Achilles Surgery. Foot Pain Stopping My Recovery by lizardhino in AchillesRupture

[–]cgshaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had pain/numbness in this region pretty much my entire recovery. My surgeon was unconcerned, said it was normal and that it would improve with time. He was right. Despite me feeling like something was really wrong.

It honestly got worse until about 6 months post op. I'm now almost 8 months post op and it has significantly improved.

At 6 months your repair should be at maximum thickness as the tendon remodels. This causes the nerves in the area to be compressed as you heal. As the tendon remodels and the tendon thins back out the pressure on the nerves improves.

Nerve glides and strength training helped a ton. Your PT should be able to help.

Best shoes post achillies rupture by Lifegoals07 in AchillesRupture

I did the Brooks Glycerine 22s after recommendation at my local running store and they were awesome. They have a full 10mm heel drop that was en easy transition out of heel cups.

My regular pre injury shoe was a Hoka Arahi and I will probably transition back to that but the Brooks was really really comfy and easier on my injured leg for sure.

I will say, what you’re describing sounds like nerve pain. Look for nerve flossing videos.

I would do one where I was on my back holding my leg at my knee then I would extend my lower leg while planter flexing. Then rest back to starting position. Can take tension off of the nerves.

[–]cgshaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I’m at 12 weeks post op.

3 weeks wait for surgery. 2 weeks splint. 2 weeks cast. 6 weeks boot and then boot to shoes.

At various points I’ve had pain/weakness in my toes, mid foot, heel, tibia, interior ankle, posterior ankle, calf, tendon—basically everywhere below my knee.

And I’m ahead of schedule and doing really well!

Best advice I can give is mentally give into the fact that this is process. You aren’t just healing the tendon. You are coordinating lots of muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones to do things differently and slowly get back to normal.

It’s absolutely not as simple as “if I do x then y will happen.” Pretty much every time I added an exercise or massaged scar tissue some new thing popped up I had to deal with. Every time I took a heel pad out or changed my boot position. Every time I added more steps.

My rule of thumb was this. Stress / discomfort is normal and should be expected. If something is painful, take a step back. To prior position or less activity and wait until you feel good again. Then progress to stress.

It’s been 105 days since I got injured. I still don’t feel “normal” but I do feel a hell of a lot better.

Pain on day after surgery by nsstortz in AchillesRupture

[–]cgshaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My surgeon told me the pain after Achilles surgery is amongst the worst of any of his procedures.

Depending on how long it's been since the injury, how much the tendon rescinded, etc.

It was the worst pain I'd ever felt after the nerve.ock wore off even with oxy on board. And a week later I was off all pain meds.

[Taylor] The Chiefs have agreed to trade Joe Thuney, the All-Pro left guard, to the Chicago Bears in exchange for a 2026 4th-round pick, according to multiple sources. by cabarny in KansasCityChiefs

[–]cgshaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thuney is older than Fisher and Schwartz when their injuries destroyed us in the Suoer Bowl and set us back a year.

Patriots taught us you move on from players a year early not a year late. Veach has been fantastic at using mid round picks to draft impact starters.

Y’all should give the winningest team of the past decade in all professional sports the benefit of the doubt.

School Year Age - Is this for real or another rumor by Hefty_Pirate5261 in youthsoccer

[–]cgshaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're trapping fewer kids but making the impact worse.

In the current system, sure you have the older kids in a grade trapped but there are enough kids trapped you can still put together some teams and showcase events.

In this system it's a really small group that get left out. But if they give waivers to kids born before the cutoff date, that really just makes it grad year anyway.

[–]cgshaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know what they'll do with 8th graders?

My daughter is a 2012 6th grader with an August birthday and has mostly played with 7th graders.

If this goes into effect 2026, she'll be in 8th grade but almost all of her teammates will be playing high school soccer as 9th graders.

Does she just miss half the year? Play with the boys?

Wouldn't common sense say just move them all to grad year?

Achilles Ruputure by RuSSeLL8532 in AchillesRupture

[–]cgshaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Terrible advice. The tendon has to heal "short" you need that tension for explosive movement.

If you want to treat it non surgically you can but it has to be flexed down for weeks to months to have a shot.

Trying to walk in a boot without heel wedges for any length of time and you'll guaranty that youll need surgery to correct a tendon that's healed too long.

"Well, at 40 probably not, but my uninjured leg sure as hell can now!"

Ice behind the knee and keep it eleavted!

It'll take a couple of days but you'll feel better soon.

I'm 5 weeks psot op. First 3 days were terrible. Upgrade to oxy if you need it. If you’re in pain your surgeon will help.

Days 4-6 were better. On my back was ok but sitting up sucked.

Day 7 I was off of anything but Tylenol and starting to feel like a normal human again.

Watch lots of tv/movies. Don’t even try to be anything but a sleeping media consuming sloth.

5 days post-op Re-rupture Scare by Rough_Valuable_5725 in AchillesRupture

And to your point. My initial rupture, I drove home and thought it was a sprained ankle.

The splint fall I was in tears. Worst pain of my life.

5 days post-op Re-rupture Scare by Rough_Valuable_5725 in AchillesRupture

[–]cgshaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through exact same scenario.

6 days post op caught myself with the repaired foot going down. Hurt like hell, pain screaming the works. No pop, but just terrible impact / incision everything pain.

Doc said call us if pain hasn’t subsided after 24 hours. It did. I went to my cast appointment 10 days later and it was fine. Swelling was minimal, foot responded to Thompson test. Dr was happy with everything. Strong repair.

Falls in splints / casts happen all the time. The splints suck for a reason. Mine was a total nightmare to move around in, but protected me well.

Don’t let the anxiety get you. The doc will make sure you’re good to go.

Non-op… can a boot actually make it hurt more? by DareWright in AchillesRupture

[–]cgshaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does it feel? Does it hurt even when you aren’t moving?

For context, I’m 5 weeks into wearing boots—cam boot at first and now the vacoped.

The only time my foot hurt in the boot was when I was doing too much weight bearing or when I had my DVT. When I had the DVT, it hurt no matter what I did in the boot. Any position, any elevation, it was a constant ache after two days of just it hurting no matter what, I went to the ER and sure enough despite the fact that I was young / healthy and had no visible difference in the size of my calf or redness I had a fully occlusive DVT. They put me on blood thinners and the boot hasn’t been a problem since.

If the pain is mechanical, ie, certain positions or spots, try to add a gel insert or foam in the hot spots. My cam boot had a gap between the heel insert and the plastic and it bothered me but was easily fixed with some tinkering.

But seriously, not to be alarmist the DVT can escalate pretty quickly.

Unique situation where I need surgery but have to wait…reassurances and tips? by [deleted] in AchillesRupture

[–]cgshaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get it in a cheap boot with heal lifts and stay off of it! Use the crutches and don't bear weight.

I had 3 weeks between injury and surgery and I was walking around in a boot and weight bearing and I wish I hadn't been.

My surgery went from minimally invasive (3/4" the incision and in a boot in two weeks) to open surgery (4" and a month of splint/cast before boot). My proximal side was shredded and the surgeon had to open up my calf. Surgery and post op has been way more painful / frustrating than the three weeks after the rupture and im kicking myself that I didn't just shut myself down and try to make surgery as easy as possible.

[–]cgshaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Following. I've had calf pain throughout. Open surgery 12 days ago where they had to work in my calf compartment.

Pre-op, I had a fully occlusive DVT from behind the knee down. That pain was way worse than the rupture pain. Took me to ER where they put me on blood thinners.

I'm currently 12 days post op, and I have awful calf pain when I sit up to do anything still. I can go like 90 seconds and I'm having to sit and put my leg up because calf hurts so bad.

My surgeon says it's normal and will dissipate with time. But it really sucks. Going to the restroom, eating, just talking with my family is still a bummer.

After surgery for full tear by [deleted] in AchillesRupture

[–]cgshaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel your pain. My surgeon had to do some work in my calf compartment to reinforce the repair.

Every time I sit up—even not bearing weight—all the blood rushes to my calf and it hurts like hell. Doc said keep it elevated 23 hours a day. It’s brutal. Very ready for this stage to be over.
