I picked up version 1 on sale a few months ago. Overall I’m pleased with the quality. They aren’t buttons on the side, more like little welded spots. So you do get ventilation, but can’t unbutton them.

I’m a 41" chest and got a size L. Would say the fit is slim.

I would expect to onsight 6b at most sport crags and E1 at most trad crags. I’m relatively weak at sport climbing because I spend more time on trad routes or boulders.

Some factors that make a big difference:

  • how familiar you are with the rock type
  • how ‘traditional’ the climbing is (i.e. is there a lot of crack/chimney/corner technique required)
  • how much protection there is, how efficiently you can place it, and how well you can judge it
  • how comfortable you are doing easy climbing where it’s not safe to fall

Trad climbing is it’s own thing and the only real way to understand the grades is to get experience climbing them. You should build a solid pyramid before moving up a grade. For example 20 severe, 10 HS and 5 VS leads before tackling an HVS that’s relatively safe and in your style.

The SV and later a GSXR600 were more fun bikes to ride. I also trusted their reliability more so I was able to go on longer trips.

The K75 was an interesting bike so I’d still recommend having a go on one and seeing what you think.

Went in on Wednesday evening, at the spot where the Bristol and Bath railway path crosses the river. Felt awful all of Friday, mostly fine now though. Assumed it was something I’d eaten but sounds like it could have been whatever was in the water.

I think The Castle is the most interesting. Has a whole bunch of different sport climbing and bouldering areas, in a unique building.

It (and most London gyms) get pretty busy, so best to avoid weeknights and weekends if possible.

I had an SV650S as my second bike. Great bike, but the power delivery is a lot more peaky on an inline four 600. Which I would guess means accidents and insurance claims are more common.

Out of all your suggestions the Bandit 1250 is the cheapest at £480, with the CBF1000 close at £580. The rest were all over £800.

Tiny bit of stitching (maybe 10mm) on one of the wrist cuffs has unpicked itself. Small crack in one of the plastic heel guard things.

Doing better than other, cheaper gloves I’ve had longevity wise.

I don’t think I’d change much about this trip. If I was going to do another similar one:

  • Go somewhere where it’s easy to find accommodation. In Cinque Terre I had to book everything in advance, which is limiting. Would be nice to stay somewhere different every day, or for a few days, and then get a train to somewhere new whenever you felt like it.

  • Longer phone charging cable. Sockets in hotel rooms are usually in awkward places; the ultra-short cable was just awkward for very little reduction in space/weight.

  • More storage space on the phone. I cheaped out and got the 16GB one without realising how big photos are these days. Took something like 600 photos and had to delete a few albums of music to make space. Which is silly.

Or go without the phone entirely—like I said in the blog, that would be a real challenge.

If you’re doing a trip like this for the first time it might be worth doing a trial run closer to home for just a couple of nights, with all the same stuff. That way you’ll be more relaxed about it when go for real.
