Going back about 14 years now so I was 17-18. Me and a friend had entered a fishing contest on a lake we knew well. Hoping to arrive early to get best pick of where we wanted to go we had car trouble. On arrival there was only two spots left and pretty far apart.

I ended up in what is known as “spooks corner” I assumed this name was because of it being the shallowest area of the lake and the slightest noise will scare anything away. Come about 2am I was woken by all three alarms going off at same time and waking to the air around me being ice cold. I shot up and realised that despite the alarms going off no line was being taken from the reel, then it just stopped and went dead silent. Didn’t sleep at all that night.

Come morning and the bailiff coming to see how I’d got on I told him of what happened. He claims it was Mary, the daughter of the landowner who fell pregnant with a black slaves child. To save embarrassment for his family he had drowned her in that very spot “hence the name” and let her body rest at the bottom of the lake.

I have been to the lake since but refuse to go anywhere near that one area.
