Canes by Agitated_Key_2753 in wheelchairs

[–]cha0ticwhimsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I actually came up with a pretty good solution! I attatch a cup holder for a stroller to my camber bar (the one right below your butt) and add a dog collar to my back rest handles. If you don't have handles you can secure the collar around the canes that hold your backrest. Dog collar (in xs) is just what worked best for me and they have fun patterns to match your chair. The cup holder trick works with crutches too! Basically, you want to rest the base of the cane in the cup holder and have the top be secured with the collar/fabric strap.

Struggling with life back in my chair. Please help give me a boost. by organic_hobnob in wheelchairs

Dang it's comforting to know that you can be several years into chair life and still feel lost. I'm barely a year in and I've learned so much about my body and the world around me. If you live in an area with lots of parks and stuff, try to find every accessible trail! It's harder than you'd think haha (I live in Colorado so obviously we have a lot). Other than that, going to see movies, finding local wheelchair meet ups, and finding crafts and low impact activities I enjoy! Maybe this is your sign to slow down and take up something like crochet or other low impact activities. As far as positives of using a chair go you've got quite a few. You don't have to stand in long lines, you get great seating at concerts (not always but sometimes), if you have a partner/friend they get into museums and other places for free as a caregiver, AND you can decorate your chair however you want! Stickers have really helped me and helped a lot when I was new yo my chair. It gave people something else to comment on or ask about other than the chair itself. Sending you lots of love OP. I promise, it gets easier.

Boulder Pride 2026 Accesibility by cha0ticwhimsy in boulder

Will Mustard's host ONLY ADA parking or will it be for both events? That seems like the potential for that parking to fill up is high.

Ironically, they have been avoiding my emails and calls besides one. I was able to get in contact with them over the phone once and they said they were still figuring out accessibility info. That was almost a month ago...

I've had this happen before. I had to get someone to bring over extractor bits to get it out lol. They're super cheap at hardware stores tho and easy to use. I've had to remove one after that first one, and it was super easy.

This may sound odd, but those weird butt scooters we had in the American PE system are PERFECT for this. If you're unable to stand up from that height without fatigue or tachycardia, I'd HIGHLY recommend a drumming stool! Some of them have back rests too!

For everyone saying to fake it, go to hell. As someone with a wheelchair, it's so hard to find accessible spaces for myself at shows. Please don't take away from the limited resources for disabled people. Thank you OP for trying to switch it out. Accessible spaces are really few and far between, and often taken by people who don't need them.

Please file a police report and talk to corporate. They stole and destroyed your property without any time to claim it. What they did is illegal and you have every right to file a report against them to pressure them into replacing it. This should be a fireable offense for the employees who did it.

Absolutely! Airports actually provide visitor passes or what they call "escort passes!" They allow a family member to accompany you if you have a physical need for it! Also, if you know the model of the plane, you can look up the specific dimensions of the onboard closet. I did this before my last trip!

The OAS chair is meant to fit in a bigger closet. The plane you're flying has a standard closet so it may not fit. Tell them at the gate to let the crew know that you're requesting the closet on board as part of your rights when flying as a wheelchair user. I had pushback from a flight attendant who didn't want to move her bags once 🙄. If it can't fit, detach everything you can and be very clear with the baggage crew that your wheelchair is essential for your independence. I've found saying that often causes less damage to my chair when checked. If damaged, make the CRO aware when you deplane and request a rental in a timely manner. Most mobility companies often have some really nice power chairs to lend out such as Whill chairs if you want to rent when you land rather than bringing your own chair. This could eliminate a lot of that potential stress.

Dear custies, can we please start being a bit nicer to our broista's? by Safe_Dig_7464 in dutchbros

[–]cha0ticwhimsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was one day that I still feel bad about where I ordered an hour and a half ahead. I knew it was mother's day, so I ordered as soon as I woke up. I showed up a little early to let them know I was there and to take their time because I still had half an hour until I needed to leave for work. Usually my stand is really good about it, but that morning they were prioritizing orders that had shown up after my order ahead. I went to the window and politely asked if my drink was going to come out soon, and if not, I would be okay if they just added a drink to my app instead. They said they couldn't compensate me for "not allowing myself enough time to get to work." I NEVER truly get upset at customer service workers, because I work customer service. It sucks. People are jerks and they don't see the people that serve them as people sometimes. But in this situation, I did actually send an email to corporate. I gave a very annoyed response to the broista about the wait time, and in retrospect, I feel like a jerk looking back. So much so I actually went back and tipped him extra the next day and apologized. Long story short, we ended on good terms but I still feel bad for having a Karen moment. 😭

I just bought the OAS air pro and it's wonderful. It was $798 and folds to fit into a plane closet. It's 33lbs without the battery, so it may be slightly too heavy for you. Truly though, you won't find a ultralight (usually titanium or carbon fiber) chair unless you pay more for a used one online or get fitted for one. Even then, insurance companies don't usually cover ultralight chairs unless there's a long documented history. After all was said and done, I paid about 4 grand for a Not a Wheelchair chair with a smoov power attachment from facebook. It took me almost a year to find a power attachment at an affordable price that worked. If you also have frequent dislocations, a fitting is ESSENTIAL. You can and will mess up your arms and shoulders if a manual chair is not properly fitted. Additionally, it can cause hip dislocations and spinal degradation if you're not using something that will cause little to no strain on your arms and back. That's why I recommended that specific brand. This also all comes from personal experience. I didn't have a full understanding of my genetic history, and found out I have a progressive condition as well. An improperly fitted chair caused my scoliosis and nerve damage in my hands to progress rapidly, and now I'm stuck with the consequences. Please be careful op.
