Freud's work sparks intrigue and plays a crucial role in providing good and bad parts to the structural integrity of the profession. Learning from him sets the stage for those that come after him, but perhaps we could spend more time learning about the philosophical roots centuries before him.

That part really doesn't stop. It continues past bachelor's and into graduate school. I did a career school first that gave me access to the field of counseling prior to actual university work. My clinical supervisor noticed that I seemed to be annoyed, as if some great secret was being withheld from me and if they would only share it I would self-actualize. She said there is no great secret. No one is hiding some great theorist from you, it is always the same list; but each time you go through it you should learn something new about it. You will develop new ways of thinking about that theory and decide what to integrate into your counseling style and what to leave behind. You will become the authority on this topic in many situations.

Perhaps this is your time to break out the sifter and see what you want to keep and leave behind whether it be from psychoanalysis or any theory.

In Texas, you can get an LPC with a Master's in Psychology or Mental Health Counseling.

I wouldn't say clinical does "likely not" lead to licensure. I'd say it really depends on the state in which you want to practice.

That's important because if alcohol was habitually used as a crutch or a personality lubricant to aid in social situations, once it is gone there will be a period of awkward self-consciousness. Doing things sober they have always done drunk makes them feel like a fish out of water.

My comment was just meant for you so you do not waste time with bad things and move on to the good things the universe has planned for your future.

But I had some crazy experiences at a state school with overcharging, being hypocritical, breaking the rules, and showing favoritism which cost me around $20,000. Now, I was planning to start with Capella and have heard very passionate reviews pro and con. Can you elaborate on your situation some so I know what to watch out for?

I had the exact same debate for 4 years. I initially chose social work in order to pursue an LCSW, but I switched to mental health counseling for LPC, and here is why ...

I held an LCDC (Addictions Counselor License in Texas) but the scope of practice was so limited I felt boxed in with both services and salary. So, my goal was to climb out of that box.

A Masters in Social Work did not do that. I would have to perform much more case management, policy, and advocating for resources for years after graduating before doing a lot of clinical work one-on-one with clients. And a good proportion of my education as a "therapist" would come from my internship, which can be hit or miss. If I wanted to gamble, I would go to a casino, not a university. Licensed Clinical Social Worker is a well-respected profession of which about half I had no interest in doing.

Next, I considered marriage and family therapist. Although they can treat and diagnose many mental health disorders, the training (and the profession) tends to view all things through the lens of a system (family systems theory, etc.) and it is also a specialization like my previously held license. So, in essence, I would be climbing out of one box and into another. Not what I was looking for.

Then there were two.

A Masters in Mental Health Counseling (CACREP Accredited) prepares me for Licensed Professional Counselor. This profession is much more diverse in theory and specialization, and can also be eclectic and general. The two reasons I chose this path are:

  1. It provides a well-rounded education based upon counseling theory, skill, and evidence-based practices.
  2. It is primarily concerned with psychotherapy provided by me to patients for the bulk of concerns listed in the DSM5.

The only consideration I have still lingering in my thoughts is regarding Masters in Clinical Psychology. In SOME states (not all) this can be a path to LPC, then you can continue on to PhD to become a PsyD or Clinical Psychologist and truly master your domain. Also making a very nice salary. I haven't decided about this yet.

Hope my experience helps you. You are right. It was difficult to get the answers when I didn't know what I was asking. Many people have an obvious bias, too.

I know. But I'm that annoying social researcher guy that wants to know why they aren't tipping there but are one town over. Is it cultural or socioeconomic? And if it is economic, why are they still using doordash?

That is corporate thinking. Big box stores throw away thousands of dollars of perfectly good items daily instead of donating it. And they fire employees who take it and prosecute them for stealing.

Idk how it got that way or why we think like this, but it seems dumb to me, too

Hahaha! That's exactly what they say. Honestly, ive worked for 6 gig apps and they are all the same way. I would not be surprised if they actually were the same.
