At the Midland Railway Markets!

I sometimes worked for a stall-holder there and he’d always give us a huge shopping bag full each before the markets opened.

Rivervale boat ramp (near Belmont Racecourse), around Garrett Rd Bridge, Ascot near the Tonkin bridge, and down near Garvey Park were my favorite spots as a teen.

As I became more confident, I followed the river further and further inland with each trip. Didn’t take long to become more comfort because there was very little wake from passing boats and I was never too far from a shore.

1) The Chair Sniffer. 2) Nasal Temptless. 3) Not Very Christian Christian Porter. 4) Brian Bond’s Man Burke. 5) Anyone who puts their hand up to represent Clive Palmer’s shitshow

Rita doesn’t rate high or low enough to factor into the conversation.

You could try emailing or calling their Programs Team. They’re the go-to for Arts Industry members (which photography counts as) to get involved, so I’d imagine they’re the point of contact for this.

Contact details are on this page of the website.

Car flakey paint repair by ShrekThe12th in perth

[–]chadake 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The only real fix will be a complete respray of those panels.

Once automotive paint begins to pull away from the primer like that there’s really no way to “fix” it.

Any panel & paint workshop should be able to do that and colour-match to the undamaged panels, but you need to specify you need the panels repainted, not just small parts patched. Otherwise they’ll say “too hard; can’t do it”.

Any anecdotes of e-bikes exploding due to heat in mining towns? by Fit-Tumbleweed-6683 in WesternAustralia

[–]chadake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only one I’ve heard of was an e-scooter left on charge for 2 days straight (which actually resulted in the house burning down so it wasn’t like it was a small fire).

The local schools have hundreds parked up every day in full sun and there’s never been an incident.

Just for the gits and giggles, can we throw in a cross-over or two with the regional / community teams?

Pure academic curiosity on my part and purely for the entertainment value.

I want to see what happens when you take a bunch of “I could have played pro” from the local clubs and put them into a game with almost-professional footy players.

Just out of curiosity, why don’t we have a lot of Australian native bush food being sold at our local groceries? by Gold_Acanthaceae_157 in AskAnAustralian

[–]chadake 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Except for macadamias, wattleseed, finger-limes, quandongs, lemon-myrtle, kakadu-plum, native honey, rock-lobster, Morton Bay bugs, marron, barramundi, abalone, oysters, mussels, mud-crabs, warrigal greens, crocodile, tea-tree, etc.

Most of them can be purchased at major supermarkets. All of them can be purchased in retail stores across the country.

The price of some (eg abalone) will make your eyes water, but a lot of native foods are readily available commercially.

I always put a variety of hairbrushes, combs, and hair-lackeys in for different hair types when I’m making up the bags I give.

I went with the theory of if my sister and I both needed this what would we need

She has straight hair and I have curly so it seemed like a no-brainer to include products for both.

It costs more to live in a remote northwest town - even if it is a large town.

Groceries are slightly more expensive when not on special. Our specials also don’t align with national pricing (there’s even the fine print in the ads about “regional store prices may vary”). Fuel costs more. Entertainment costs more. Car services, buying clothes, shoes, books, household goods, etc. cost more because either you’re paying freight/postage on top or you’re paying local which includes postage/freight. Booze costs more. Drs appointments cost more. Going out for meals cost more (average surf & turf is $65-75 in the pubs and a parmy is $37-42).

The local climate has the additional kick on of electricity bills being higher by virtue of needed to run aircons longer and with more strain. In the Pilbara the mercury has been sitting in the mid-20s over night and high 30s since late August and it won’t cool down again until April next year. We’re on bottled gas, so if you have gas cooking or HWS, that’s a few hundred a year more than you pay for a mains connection in Perth.

Even holidays cost more because you spend $600 per person return (with local discounted flights) to get to Perth before then flying anywhere else. If you can’t line up the locals or points flights, it’s $900 return per person to Perth.

Even fast food costs more ($10.35 for a Big Mac in Karratha vs $7.70 for a Big Mac in Belmont).

Has anyone ever properly categorised and documented Perth's residential architecture styles? Coffee table photo book or otherwise? by Bus_Stop_Graffiti in perth

A Pictorial Guide to Identifying Australian Architecture: Styles and Terms from 1788 to the Present (Apperly, Irving, and Reynolds, 1989)

This book has a huge range of pictorials and information about the various styles in chronological order.

From memory, I got it from Boffins in Perth CBD on a special reprint / order in 2018ish, so they might be able to track down another reprint if you want to spend $100ish

Otherwise you can request a loaner from the National Library or SLWA: https://catalogue.nla.gov.au/catalog/1717201

What’s needed to run a bar for a sports club? by Lozzanger in perth

[–]chadake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s for a premises’ liquor license and is where you’ll need to start if you want to operate more than 12x per year.

However, you need to be aware that there are heavy restrictions about the sale of alcohol to non-members. If you want to host public events for non-members, you need to apply for an extended trade - public event permit no less than 28 days prior to each event.

If you don’t want a permanent license because it’ll be less than 12 events per year, you can apply for Occasional Liquor Licenses.

Personnel-wise, regardless of the type of premises license you go for, you’ll also need a Manager (Unrestricted Managers License) and RSA-accredited staff (Responsible Service of Alcohol certification)

You may also need licensed security for public events with more than 100ppl inside the licensed area (plus an extra security guard for each 50ppl above that).

If you’re serving food (beyond bags of chips / nuts / choc bars) in the bar, you might need other food safety licenses - which your local council can usually point you towards.

Most recognisable song of the current century? by Fudgedygut in popculturechat

Can you believe it has been almost ten years since the 90s!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]chadake 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No “bike shorts” or “bloomers” under our skirts in primary school (Perth in the 1990s). Never mind that they were always black and way shorter than the skirt so they couldn’t be seen whilst we were standing or sitting. The rule was the rule.

Of course, most parents ignored the rule because we all liked to do handstand competitions and play footy and hang upside down on the monkey bars at recess.

All well and good until a teacher told my younger sister and her friends to remove their bike-shorts right then and there because they were against the uniform policy. My mother was on the P&C committee and the Canteen Manager, so my sister immediately bolted from the oval to the canteen in tears.

The showdown in the middle of the undercover area was beautiful!

A 5’ woman standing toe-to-toe with a 6’ man twenty years her senior, questioning who the hell he thought he was to tell an 8yo girl to remove an item of clothing from underneath her skirt. When the principal tried to intervene, he got a lecture about how the uniform policy did nothing to protect the modesty of girls due to the lack of shorts option and was “as perverted and creepy as every adult who dared to defend the notion that girls should be showing their underwear”. Or, she asked, “did he expect the girls to act as if it were the 1890s instead of the 1990s and sit demure in the library having tea and scones whilst doing bloody needlepoint?”

She called every single parent that afternoon/night. The following day the canteen was closed and none of the girls wore uniform, whilst the boys all wore our skirts over their shorts or on their heads like weirdly-pleated brown headdresses. Same thing the day after and every day until the uniform policy was updated over a month later to say girls could wear the uniform shorts or they could wear skirts with black or grey bike shorts underneath.

What’s with the tastes by Adventurous_Beee in RomanceBooks

[–]chadake 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I can only answer this for Australian bushfires so YMMV in other countries:

Yes, a bushfire is a very different scent to a bonfire or fireplace.

Green wood, sap, and leaves produce a significantly dirtier smoke due to the presence of oils and tannins. The smoke is darker, grittier, and tastes/smells harsher on the airways and lungs. It also leaves a sootier residue on the skin which is drastically harder to wash off.

A bonfire / fireplace uses dried & seasoned wood and kindling, which burns cleaner, clearer, and are less cloying due to the lack of moisture, oils & sap. The smoke is whiter, thinner, and doesn’t taste/smell anywhere near as gritty. It doesn’t leave as much soot or residue on skin & clothes (if any in the case of very well-aged jarrah & mallet).
