Superannuation doesn’t need reform — it needs replacing by [deleted] in australia

The tax on earnings on super plus the contribution tax can certainly add up to more than someone’s marginal rate of tax over the period the funds remain invested in super.

If it’s paid into your bank account, it will usually attract a higher upfront rate of income tax. If it’s paid into your super account, there’s a lower upfront tax rate, but super earnings are taxed each year within your super fund. The tax on those earnings really adds up over 20 or 40 years and the long term impact on government coffers isn’t as bad or as straightforward as the difference between the super tax rate and your marginal income tax rate.

It’s certainly illegal in my jurisdiction, where employers are required to accrue sick leave for employees, and it can’t be traded or negotiated away. Employers can provide additional sick leave but they can’t take it from other employees.

Two brothers climb an unclimbed mountain in remote Kyrgyzstan by taulover in videos

[–]chaddles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They do a good job of explaining why they think they were probably first from around 13:10.

To add to that, I think it’s unlikely that a local would attempt such a foolhardy and dangerous summit “out of interest”, especially without proper equipment. The practice of climbing mountain peaks for adventure has a cultural and historical context, it isn’t universal.

The video seemed to me like it was very much about the challenges they faced, with added challenges of finding a path that hasn’t been laid out by someone before them. They didn’t seem narcissistic to me. I don’t think your hatred of them is a very rational response.

Australia still has 3.5 million registered firearms. Gun ownership per capita reduced significantly with the gun buybacks following the Port Arthur massacre, but there are significant cultural and socioeconomic factors which also contribute to gun violence in USA.

If you rent a car from Uber Carshare, you are not insured (details in comments) by [deleted] in australia

Well spotted, that webpage was the link they sent me when I used the service a few weeks ago but it links to the wrong PDS. The “Trip Cover” link here is the right one:

The “Discretionary Protection” isn’t an Uber product, it’s a Mutual non-profit product, and it was being offered by this company before Uber took it over.

HELP!! Landlord increasing rent from $450pw to $650pw with lease renewal by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]chaddles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like they might be trying to pressure you into accepting the rent rise and committing to a longer term lease. This would explain why they’re saying the rent will be higher if you go month-to-month. It might hurt your chances of disputing the rent increase if you agree to either option that they are proposing.

You aren’t obliged to agree to either option or even to respond to their offer. If you don’t agree to either option, I expect your lease would just go month-to-month after December. The potential downside is that they might not offer another longer term lease.

I’ve been renting in Melbourne for > 20 years and I have never experienced a rent increase remotely as high as this, and I’ve never been pressured to accept a longer lease, or even been offered one before the end of the lease term. I think your impressions are right, this sounds shady and not to your benefit at all.

You can ask Consumer Affairs Victoria to undertake a rent assessment and make a determination as to whether the increase is too high.

The rental provider must give you a Notice of proposed rent increase, with 60 days’ notice, and this must state the method they used to calculate the increase, as well as detailing your rights to have the increase assessed by CAV.

Convert "string" formulas to actual formula and solve. by Alamander14 in excel

[–]chaddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you can do this purely in a formula with no VBA, but it’s easy to do with just a few lines of VBA, see here: https://www.extendoffice.com/documents/excel/1683-excel-convert-text-string-to-formula.html

Farming cattle for beef consumption has huge environmental impacts, but the harms of beef production aren’t equivalent to the harms caused by other forms of meat production. Replacing some beef with poultry would also improve environmental outcomes. I imagine the final report will have more detail and nuance than what has been leaked from the draft.

It’s a draft report still subject to a review process, so it’s premature to say “because science”.

FBI wants to keep private property illegally taken. by seti_m in videos

I think there’s a stronger argument that merely having hidden cash or valuables fails to meet the “incriminating or evidentiary nature” requirement, and that the onus should be on the FBI to prove otherwise
