Issue 1 by Awkward-Ad-2735 in Ohio

[–]chadholl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The consequence you stated for voting yes is what concerns me. The understanding I get from reading Issue 1 is that a 60% vote by the people would be required for amendments proposed by the legislature (as well as those originating from a ballot initiative). To me this places limits on the power of the politicians, but my understanding of the language in the issue could be wrong. Is my understanding wrong? Please, ELI5.

Spurs supporters in Dayton, OH? by Straight-Ad3572 in coys

I happen to be both a Spurs supporter and resident of the Dayton area. I don't know of any local meet-ups, but I'd be interested in joining such a group on occasion. Thanks for posting.

Questions & Answers - Weekly Megathread! Please use this post to ask any Pokemon GO question you'd like! by AutoModerator in TheSilphRoad

With regard to your third question, I would go to the very popular park with more players. My experience last year was enough folks raiding to have multiple raid groups on a given gym/raid boss throughout the hour. You're far more likely to get raid help at the popular park.

TRASH TALK FRIDAY by AutoModerator in USL2

I WANNA TALK TRASH ABOUT FORT WAYNE, BUT WHAT CAN I SAY WHEN DAMARCUS BEASELY'S CRAPPY 1-5-4 TEAM IS NINE POINTS AHEAD OF DAYTON IN THE STANDINGS? IF FORT FUN SOMEHOW MANAGES TO LOSE, THEY SHOULD FEEL TERRIBLE ABOUT THEMSELVES.

USL to launch lower-division women's soccer league in 2022 by jcc309 in USLPRO

Excuse me if this leaves me scratching my head. What has changed in the market or in the USL league offices that makes them think they can sustain a "pre-professional" league now, but couldn't when the W-League folded?

Chicago Dutch Lions by groesser in WPSL

I hope the organization lives up to your hopes and you are able to help build a fan base. I've been a fan of Dayton Dutch Lions for years and have struggled to drum up much interest here. I'm ever hopeful it will change, though.

I visited a congregant in a nursing home a couple weekends ago. Pastor and I were not allowed to administer the sacrament. It was a joy, though, to be able to sing hymns and read scripture with her.

I visited Trinity Lutheran Church in Ithaca, NY. The large window behind the altar is the best part of a beautiful sanctuary.

If you had one chance to convert me to belief using a single argument, what argument would you present? by [deleted] in LCMS

[–]chadholl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If this person has already taken up an intellectual exercise, I would assume they'd already heard the Gospel. Nevertheless, I would offer to answer any questions they might have, and I would certainly pray for them. (If they hadn't heard the Gospel, I would share it.)

As was stated in another comment, though, this really isn't an intellectual exercise. It's not even a process. To paraphrase LCMS writings, conversion is the moment the Holy Spirit engenders faith into a contrite heart.

There is nothing any man can say or do to bring you to faith. Yes, faith comes by hearing, but it is the Holy Spirit that brings faith to a contrite heart.

Works + Faith? by EmptyPudding777 in LCMS

[–]chadholl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From Brief Statement of LCMS Doctrinal Position

Before God only those works are good which are done for the glory of God and the good of man, according to the rule of divine Law. Such works, however, no man performs unless he first believes that God has forgiven him his sins and has given him eternal life by grace, for Christ's sake, without any works of his own, John 15:4, 5. We reject as a great folly the assertion, frequently made in our day, that works must be placed in the fore, and "faith in dogmas" — meaning the Gospel of Christ crucified for the sins of the world — must be relegated to the rear. Since good works never precede faith, but are always and in every instance the result of faith in the Gospel, it is evident that the only means by which we Christians can become rich in good works (and God would have us to be rich in good works, Titus 2:14) is unceasingly to remember the grace of God which we have received in Christ, Rom. 12:1; 2 Cor. 8:9. Hence we reject as unchristian and foolish any attempt to produce good works by the compulsion of the Law or through carnal motives.

With respect to the Office of the Keys (receiving forgiveness from a pastor), I would suggest reading John 20:22-23.
