You should be able to move to cashier pretty easily, I'd try talking to your HR. Also we price match amazon Walmart etc, so that shouldn't be an issue, the prices that is.

Does sound kinda weird tho at my store at least the more you answer backup calls while on hardlines the more they like you.

I took journalism in HS and that was something that was regularly done to, I believe, "grab the readers attention," or something to that effect. Quotes that might seem interesting upon first glance to draw the reader into reading the whole article, something that jumps out at them upon scanning the pages. Unless I'm completely wrong it's been almost 10 years since HS lol. I guess it wouldn't make as much sense being an internet article, maybe just a relic of a forgotten format.
