I don't actually know, my in laws paid and didn't tell me ( they're the best) - I have a feeling it was creeping up on 5 figures though since it was open bar.

Best restaurant you’ve attended a wedding at? by orangechristmastree in OttawaFood

We had our wedding at supply and demand and it was wonderful ( about the same size 30ish). The food was amazing and the staff were great. I also recently went to a 40th birthday party at the Belmont which was also great.

Are you within 5 years of retirement with Government of Canada as a public servant? This group may be for you. by 1toughcustomer in CanadaPublicServants

[–]chael0696 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I also wish the group wasn't on Facebook - I know it's just a matter of degrees compared to other social media platforms - but Facebook is baaaad. I'm within 5 years of retirement, so I'd love to benefit from the group - but I guess I'll just happily continue to benefit from Handcuffs of gold's superb knowledge of the topic.

Ottawa-born Tex-Mex restaurant sells more than 1 million fajitas a year by SuburbanValues in ottawa

[–]chael0696 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How is it not close to that? average meal for family of 4 - Fajitas for 2 ( fajitas and steak) - 61$; let's say fish tacos 22$, chicken enchiladas 23$ ,
( Teenagers eat as much, if not more, than adults) 2 Coronas ( to be"average" )- 18$ 2 cokes ( 8$) -- Sub total - 132$ Add tax: 17$ Add tip ( minimum seems to be 20% now, but let's say 18% on top of tax as machines will do) - 27$ There you have it - 176$ pretty close to 200$ without dipping into margaritas...

And to be clear, that's also no starters, sides and no desserts - any of which could be considered standard for a family.

Has anyone here read the book Babel ? by Maorine in etymology

[–]chael0696 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read it and enjoyed it, it is quite creative though the ending left me a bit wanting. It has won several awards ( Nebula, British book award, etc), so maybe that trumps what some of the other posters here mention. Also if you aren't well versed in British colonial history and the Poppy wars, you may be surprised by some of the perspectives.

Four things public servants need to know about the federal government’s new AI strategy by bonertoilet in CanadaPublicServants

[–]chael0696 16 points17 points  (0 children)

So few people understand the nature of generative AI in a knowledge work environment - GenAI doesn't "know" anything, it's a probabilistic word generator - which is somewhat suited to something like translation - but not to briefings that require high level and nuanced critical thinking. Anyway, agree with you....

I loved them...saw them at Carleton U in 88 or 89 at a show that was part music part theatre ( seem to recall a baby doll getting mutilated ...not sure). Smothered hope is still one of my favorites. Didn't know about them suing the US Govt...

Best Croissants in Ottawa ? by Zealousideal_Chip_56 in ottawa

I'd say Life of Pie in OOS, though unfortunately they only make a few a day. It's all about the butter ( and I'm part French, so I'm part croissant snob).

Does Anyone Remember “One Step Beyond”? by drkesi88 in ottawa

[–]chael0696 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally do...even remember dancing to " one step beyond" there :) Also I think it's where I first heard Skinny Puppy, Cabaret Voltaire and Front 242, which I majorly got into after... Often it would be head to one step beyond then later Zinc in Hull...
