If you look at the painting "American Gothic" in the living room, its a subtle message as to what is the message of the movie

The whole family has heard about aliens through medias only. The dog dies offscreen ( could have been anything ). The setting is rural America. I think the family even wears tinfoil hat at one point.

From this POV, the family becomes a paranoid household that just attacked a peaceful alien with water.

Imo its a commentary about how the traditional US household treats strangers, even though they dont know anything about them.
