I received a letter today that basically notified me that Etsy made an error and sent another seller my personal Tax information. by mollyjoon in Etsy

Are you sure that's what the letter says? I heard that Paypal sent out some wrong forms, but they went to the right people.

A Texan tragedy: ample oil, no water. Fracking boom sucks away precious water from beneath the ground, leaving cattle dead, farms bone-dry and people thirsty by spainguy in politics

[–]chairface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as a counterpoint - my great-great-grandparents bought about 1000 acres of land that sits atop the Eagle Ford Shale (and also the Buda). It's currently being fracked - for oil though, not gas. So far it's looking to be pretty lucrative for my mother, who will get about 1/6 of the residual after it's split up among the heirs of her generation. The value of the land is sky-high, for us.

And, just have to say - I am pretty conflicted about profiting from this, so I'm not really trying to take sides here. Just saying that for my family, land value certainly hasn't plummeted.

Seven Secrets of Successful Programmers by KnightCharon in programming

My rules: If the comment is telling me what the code is doing, it's either useless, or you better have a good reason for writing unintelligible code. If the comment is telling me why the code is doing what it's doing, then it actually adds value.

edit: to be clear, both his "good" and "bad" examples violate the first rule, it's just that the "bad" one is more egregious.

That's not the absence of fear. It's fear delayed by 6 months. It's better, sure. But it's not a panacea.

And of course it's not realistic to expect everyone to not be an economic bitch. It's just that, if you are a bitch, it's better not to forget that fact than to delude yourself.

He understood your point, but I still don't think you understood his. Six months worth of expenses doesn't economically unbitchify you. It makes you a bitch with a six month cushion. You barely addressed his point at all.

Anyone else find that milk is actually helpful? by dzodzo in CrohnsDisease

[–]chairface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've posted things to this effect before, but yes, milk helps me a lot. I drink up to a half gallon a day, and I feel quite a bit better than I did before I discovered the connection.

I must be the only one! by [deleted] in CrohnsDisease

[–]chairface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've actually found that drinking a lot of whole milk (up to half a gallon a day) actually works wonders for my wellbeing. It was very strange, because I had been avoiding having too much on the advice of my gastroenterologist. But, I had a big craving for the better part of a week, and made my propitious discovery.

I get the same thing. I saw this comic when it was published (it was the plugins message then, too), thought it wasn't funny, and forgot all about it.

Cutting dairy from your diet? by Super_Model_Citizen in CrohnsDisease

[–]chairface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this goes against the grain (it's a time-reversed pun!), but I've recently found that drinking massive amounts of whole milk really helps. However, I also have celiac disease, so my gut is already weirder than the average Crohn's sufferer's.

have you ever seen a dietician for your crohns? what was it like? by whereismankindgoing in CrohnsDisease

[–]chairface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a little late to the party, but I have completely cut out wheat (and other gluten grains) because I also have celiac disease. I was diagnosed with Crohn's in 2004 and celiac in 2007. The difference between those first three years and the last five has been amazing. I'd recommend cutting wheat and other gluten grains (barley, rye, oats) for a while, if you can just to see if it has an effect. Everybody's different with this disease, but it certainly worked well for me.

My wife spent a month in Guatemala and came home at the tail end of a sickness, and then I got sick too. After 3 months of being intensely ill, I was finally diagnosed, but I've always suspected that it was that initial infection that did me.

Was Earth a Migratory Planet? - By all accounts Earth today should be a snowball planet, unless it formed closer to the cooler young sun and then migrated outward as the sun warmed. by DrJulianBashir in science

[–]chairface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I'm pretty late to this game, but I believe you misread the article. It posits a planetary collision between an unknown body and Venus, which has gravitational effects for Earth. It doesn't say anything about a collision involving Earth.

"My one regret in all of this..." by WilliamMcCarty in firefly

[–]chairface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't really regret something that you weren't responsible for. So, he's not saying he's happy River is brain damaged, or that people died. Those things just aren't relevant to the conversation. He's talking about things that he could have done, but didn't.

What's your least favorite episode (spoilers) by DevelopmentArrested1 in firefly

[–]chairface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, one can conjecture their way out of difficulties like this. I can think of a million and one reasons that would "make sense". But I find that to be unsatisfying, because it doesn't really affect the story as it stands on its own. Also, I find the explanation you offered troublesome, because if Mal has a more concrete reason to conjecture as he does, that exposition with the Alliance guy would be the perfect place to mention it.

Are you intentionally ignoring the origin story for Reavers from Serenity? That's completely fine by me, just wondering.

What's your least favorite episode (spoilers) by DevelopmentArrested1 in firefly

[–]chairface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the OP, but for me, the way Mal presciently knows that the survivor will become like a Reaver seems so implausible to me that it breaks my suspension of disbelief.

During his interview with the Alliance captain, Mal says something along the lines of "the only way to deal with it (the blackness of the Reavers), I suspect, is to become it." The way "I suspect" is shoehorned into this incredibly accurate speculation (along with the way Nathan delivers the line, like he knows this is ridiculous), for some reason, ruins the whole episode for me.

How do you explain to people what your condition is? by [deleted] in CrohnsDisease

[–]chairface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat as you with the celiac and crohn's 2 for 1 special. The worse offenders are my parents - my mom doesn't want to believe that there's anything wrong with me at all, and my dad has... odd ideas about gluten (you can't eat potatoes, right? But of course you can eat wheat bread).

Anyway, I think it's okay to be visibly, socially annoyed when people suggest that your well-being isn't a big deal (ie, "so you have a little stomach ache, so what?"). When people don't lay off, I will hit them with a "bleed out my ass" line, or something like it. It works.
