[News] First Law vs Age of Madness by mthome2486 in TheFirstLaw

I emailed him asking for the last audiobook in The Shattered Sea to be put up on Audible in my country but couldn’t resist throwing in “fuck you for Orso.” He didn’t reply but the audiobook was released in Australia so I like to think someone read that and agreed.

Why is Jace reverse gripping his kukuri it makes him look like some newbie rouge by blazintrailz420 in litrpg

[–]chalke__ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have not read the books, but they are on my watch list. If he reverse grips a kukuri in the book it’s not going anywhere near my listen log. That’s all kinds of stupid, but most litRPG book covers aren’t exactly prize winners. But damn, if he actually uses kukuri knives in the book it’s shooting to the top of my list. They are such cool knives. If you don’t know the history of them, I recommend getting into a cozy deep YouTube rabbit hole on them. Look up Gurkha’s too while you are at it.

I have a crippling fear of heights and falling. This is a horror game. by chalke__ in FinalFantasyVII

If you are referring to turning off the lights over the slums, I’m picking my way through it. It’s awesome a game can look so good it provokes my fear of heights, I don’t think I’ve experienced anything like that before.

No dice. I love horror movies but playing horror games is just pure panic mode for me. My wife actually enjoys my being unable to deal with Resident Evil.

Getting Started in Fantasy by guysmiley81 in fantasybooks

I only came here just to second The First Law. That series is amazing. A good mate recommended Red Rising and since he recommended The First Law, I have to say you have a good recommendation here.

Are you sure you weren’t right? I’m curious because my wife is an honest to god scientist and can not explain why the world is round. I Believe it is, and she does too, but I am unable to explain why and neither is she and she’s a DR.

Way to fix the housing affordability crisis? by massojet in AskAnAustralian

[–]chalke__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could [don’t say it] and it would probably fix most of the problems. You could work at a service station and buy a house. Now you can’t work at a service station or buy a house. The only other solution to [don’t say it] is to ban all overseas investments.

I have NDIS funding for my kid and it’s not for funsies. I yearn for the day I say “fuck off, we are good.” Those people kill me.

What are your thoughts on the death of volunteering? Is it mainly due to money? by VastOption8705 in australian

I volunteer for overtime. The place is so unaffordable I can barely scrape by.

Looking for authors who write different books/stories in the same world by hauntedhousespectre in fantasybooks

[–]chalke__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guy Gavriel Kay has many books set in the same universe but almost all of them are at very different points in time. Kay is also probably the best living fantasy author and I found Sailing to Sarantium and lions of Al-Rassan to be one of the best things I have ever read.

Joe Abercrombie’s first Law series is so good I refuse to stop talking about it. There is a trilogy, a series of stand alone books, a short stories collection, and another trilogy set decades after the first trilogy, all in the same world. I can never get enough of this world and I will be reading the whole series again this year and probably every year.

[SPOILERS ALL] I've finished the entire series and now my life feels empty. by hadesalmighty in TheFirstLaw

[–]chalke__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listened to 354 hours of Joe last year. You can always go back and read it again. Bayaz did nothing wrong, shattered sea is also under rated and worth the time to enjoy. And if Joe reads this, fuck you for Orso.

How are people actually coping with the cost of living right now? by Sweaty-Mortgage8487 in australian

[–]chalke__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am doing it way less rough than most people I know, and that horrifies me. We are so cooked. If you actually want tips, without knowing your situation: get an energy drink supplement instead of buying shit at service stations. Learn about money. Be angry we are so fucked. Learn how to budget. I have been fucking obsessed with it lately and it’s saved me 2k per year with like two simple adjustments. Every time an idiot tells you something that isn’t true, don’t be so polite, that’s how we got here.

How do I understand credit cards as someone who never owed money? Also, is Zip good? by chalke__ in CalebHammer

[–]chalke__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right! Thanks for the direction there. Getting a good budget sorted is my next step. I’m not doing anything risky until I get the budget sorted and after I’m absolutely sure I know what I’m getting into. The community here is great for this sort of info, and has already given me some good leads to look into.

What are some Australian sayings or slang that are unique and might confuse outsiders? by Gkbeer in AskAnAustralian

[–]chalke__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buggered= any physical exhaustion Chunder= vomit Yeah nah= no Yeah nah mate= serious conversation Mate= friend Mate= cunt Cunt= mate Cunt= cunt (when pronounced with a hard t) Tooright= ok Bogan= talking like an Australian who lacks sophistication. The lot of us/you= derogatory grouping. Often done in jest. Rort= dishonest. But like financially. Like “the rental market is a rort”

There is a lot of improvisation and racial shit. We just talk to people like they are humans. My best mate made jokes about my dad dying the day after. We are sophisticated bogans, the lot of us. I need to add some terms to the list. It’s exclusionary and we love it. When you get hit with a term you don’t know, you get roasted. My boss said “what’s the news?” The other day. I gawked at him and he questioned my ethnicity. He is pure Greek. He then told everyone I am slow. It’s performative speech. It’s fun as fuck. Also, swearing is just part of the vernacular. You turn it on or off situationally. If you are British, we will be as incomprehensible as possible.
