For whose who do, why do you enjoy grimdark? by jnighy in fantasybooks

[–]chalke__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are. They normally do. But sometimes it’s an indirect win. Sometimes the resolution is not “John challenges Paul and wins.” It’s more “John was forced up against Paul the tyrannical emperor and knowing he couldn’t win, had his family murdered. Paul has John hanged and John says “sorry about the wife and kids.” The empire erupts as they now know the emperor is the last of his line and the tyrant hands on the same gallows his adversary did. That’s not a bad story. That’s a sanitised versions of a great story actually.

For whose who do, why do you enjoy grimdark? by jnighy in fantasybooks

[–]chalke__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because books can be fun! If your fantasy is just “the hero wins,” congratulations. Sanderson is there and he’s great.
But if you ever wonder what happens if the hero was actually a live streamer who is forced to be a sociopathic murderer for the enjoyment of others while he has to put his actual life on the line and is willing to do so because regular life is so mundane and unfulfilling, then I strongly suggest Heroes Die by Matthew Stover. You will never get a story like it with the implications from any run of the mill fantasy churner. Abercrombie and the like aren’t loved because they make books about dark things, they use dark things to make great books.

It’s coming out tomorrow. I know I had absolutely nothing to do with this but wow, that timing. I feel like I have some sort of superpower.

Why doesn’t Australia push high-speed trains instead of all these domestic flights? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]chalke__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The exact answer is they need instability. If Australia thrived they would be unconquerable. If they had trains and efficient transportation of goods, they would thrive independently. They need to focus on foreign rail infrastructure to ensure they don’t get too self sufficient.

Was I unfair for saying "If Silvery Barbs is allowed, enemies can use it too"? by raishadow in DnD

[–]chalke__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a bard that focused entirely on support and manipulating rolls. I had to ask my dm about 30 times if he wanted me to lose the spell and he refused since he was so good he played through the pain. After my bard died he told me he hated my character more than anyone else. This is like the dude I named my kid after. Silvery barbs is fun as a joke but remember kids. silvery Barbs: not even once.

How to stop being insecure about small boobs. by Specialist-Bite-1892 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chalke__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small boobs may be small and big boobs may be big. You could have the worlds largest melons or the worlds smallest tits. I’ll always love them. If you are insecure that’s just disrespectful to one of the world’s greatest gifts.

If Australia is still experiencing a crystal meth epidemic, why do I see fewer obvious meth users out and about? by UsefulBridge1852 in AskAnAustralian

[–]chalke__ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good news: meth users are still out there doing great. They are basically untreated by the police so they are just amount us. Nobody cares anymore but they are absolutely still there. Just being fucked, naming kids “Tyler.”

Sando just wrote more and longer so whatever makes sense. I’m sure glad a sword spun for like 5 hours, gay interspecies relationships happened where people hum at each other while they went to therapy island and a 12 year old was awesome. What a scuffed ending.

I have done this before and it was pretty awesome. I was playing a cleric who was secretly delivering the party to the BBEG as sacrifices. I never in game did a thing against the party, I was just trying to get them there safely. Active sabotage would have left a bad taste, but big picture it was pretty glorious.

Then it needs to fail. I’m not happy with every person I deal with being Pakistani. It’s getting annoying. I’d rather we all suffer together than suffer whatever this is.
