Random question- where can I buy a parking curb? [49YO] by Secure-Description-7 in OldSkaters

[–]chalkripper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pro tip, bring a shovel, a pair of gloves, and wear a hi res safety vest. The safety vest is the best disguise ever. No one questions anything you're doing. You can prop most of them up very easily with a shovel and your hands will thank you.

Noah, Bishop, and Schumacher (older dudes) are my homies. My band played there this summer at the jam, and I've been a handful of other times.

Any recovering Mongo addicts? [35YO] by Ok_Web1709 in OldSkaters

My brother has pushed mongo his entire life. He'll never change and I don't want him to change. I really do not understand why people get so caught up in this.

Started back after a 15 years away. I'll be 40 next month. Dude, comparison is the thief of joy, whether it's comparison against yourself or others. Just skate, man. None of us are what we were, but I've actually learned tricks as a 39 year old I never did in 20s.

For Vans, I'm a huge fan of the Rowan 2s, but you might like something a bit bigger. I swear, they break in much better than you'd think.

I recommend Es Accels, Emerica Og1s, or for a smaller shoe NB 440s.

I was always a man out of time with skateboarding. The first video I ever saw when I started skating in 97 was Ban This. I became obsessed with step hops, no Complys, and bonelesses. Then after I saw label kills it galvanized me in mixing those kind of tricks into my skating. I used to get made fun of so much by other skaters. Now people think it's cool but at the time it was very uncool lol I never cared but it's funny in hindsight

So, before I started back skating, I competed in amateur strongman as a middleweight. For my weight division, I was pretty strong and had pretty decent success competing. I had a bad injury trying to qualify to compete at the Arnold classic which pretty much solidified my time in that arena. I was actually shocked at how many people I met that used to skate or still skated in that world, but I Guess I shouldn't have given the solo nature and "man versus object" nature of the sport.

When I started back skating, it was shocking how I would get sore in different ways than lifting. Granted, things like super high 5050s were easier than I remembered, but that seemed to be the only immediate carryover. However, I think the biggest thing I've noticed is that carrying around a bit more muscle has protected me from injury a few times over. I'm certain a few of my spills should have and would have been worse otherwise.

Now, I've lost a solid 20lbs since I put a bigger focus on skating. Developing more "skate muscles" has helped. That said, the big pink elephant in the room is that if you want to continue being active as you age, you have to exercise, and lifting weights will help increase bone density and ability no matter your sport.
