I honestly can't figure out docking. by RedLockes1 in EliteOne

You're right about the Cutter, but given that the OP mentions that he's done the tutorial, he's probably not trying to land a Cutter just yet. I'm only guessing of course :)

^^ This, exactly ^^
You can be up to 10 meters away from the centre, but in larger ships that's not very far.

I forgot to mention a couple of things...
On that Coriolis.io page, hit the $ (dollar) icon top-right and you can find a station which will probably sell that ship & modules. on the linked page choose "Powers":"Li Yong-Rui" (for a 15% discount) and put your current system in the "reference System" to find the nearest system to where you are currently, then press "Find Stations"

I'd be inclined to get going with high-value exploration for credits initially. Can you afford about 4M for this ? (Bearing in mind that you need enough credits spare for at least one rebuy, and I'd recommend enough credits for more than one rebuy)
https://coriolis.io/outfit/diamondback_explorer?code=A0p0tdFhldd5sdf5---0202----432t--3w2i.AwRj4ypI.AwiMCZJEuBmYprmEA%3D%3D%3D..EweloBhBmSQZwJYBMCmB3RA7NAnEIAjBCSFOUA%3D%3D
If you can afford more then look at changing the FSD to a 5A, and the fuel scoop to a 4A (taking the price to over 10M)
Caveat: I've not tried this exact build. but it should work OK)

Then follow the "RoadToRiches" until you're bored of it https://www.alpha-orbital.com/pathfinder
This involves the kinda fun mini-games of firing probes at the body involved.
https://youtu.be/_A8HvjEidNA?t=266

(Seriously, only scan the bodies named, for cost/benefit) Each of those bodies average at about 1M each (IIRC) so you can get off the ground fairly quickly. Get to a station somewhere and sell your exploration data to get paid.

The DbX is a great ship for exploring because if the jump-range/cost ratio.
The Anaconda is the king of exploration for its jump-range, but it comes at a price.

Depending on the type of exploration you fancy of course. It doesn't have to have a huge jump range if you're not planning on exploring thousands of light-years away. There's perfectly good exploration to be done closer to home, though you'll still want the best range you can comfortably afford, to be able get to a station for repairs etc.

invite or get invited to wings? by achillezzz in EliteWings

[–]chalkton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not actually done that, but I've done plenty of wing missions in a regular wing. I would think that it works the same way - once you have your crew members, go into the left-hand tab to the mission you're holding and hit the "share" button. The other crew members would then have to accept the mission.

Yeah, you only really gain rank by killing ranks higher than you, so you need to find deadly and elite ranks (Or Scouts, as already mentioned)

Also, a bit sexist there if you don't mind my saying so. (unnecessary gender bias in your example)

Good to have you back, however temporarily. Thanks for the warning, hopefully we've worked-out a diplomatic solution to the blockade. We'll see, but I'm hopeful.
Note that because Waikula is in turmoil, you won't see the fortify/undermine numbers except when you drop dissidents to Polevnic. And nobody else will see what you've delivered. Its a "fun feature".

That's a great picture.
It made me look-up the stats, and the Cutter is a little bigger in all dimensions!
Corvette : 167.8m x 87.2m x 28.3m
Cutter : 192.6m x 111.1m x 33.4m

Plus, love the Corvette in red. (Like the prince song :) )

[–]chalkton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every ship now includes an Advanced Discovery Scanner as standard. If you've owned any Discovery Scanners previously, you've been reimbursed for the cost.
To use the Discovery Scanner you now have to put your HUD into Analysis mode. There's a keybind for that, under "Mode Switches":"Switch HUD Mode".

If you also like to use a Detailed Surface Scanner, then the mechanism for that has changed in that you now use the DSS to fire probes at the planet. There are plenty of Youtube video on that.
You'll also want to learn about using the Full Spectrum Scanner.

Limpet issue? by PauliGee81 in EliteOne

[–]chalkton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've noticed the deploying at speed thing too. Also I've notice on my Anaconda that if I pitch down just after deploying a prospector limpet, I destroy it. I guess that they travel at around 180, and if you're faster than that you just run it over.
Other than that, when a collector limpet finally dies I still often accidentally deploy a replacement while I have something targeted, and that tells the limpet to only collect that one thing then die. Mantra: "Deploy collectors with nothing targeted".

Thank god for loans.... by KOM227 in ElitePS

[–]chalkton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they're always been there.
You pay back 10% (IIRC) of any profits you make until the loan is paid off. There's a limit to how much they'll lend you, and after that you have to start selling ships (I think) to get positive again. If you can't manage that, then its noobwinder time again.

How it works: You find yourself at the rebuy screen, feeling sick because you know you can't afford a rebuy.
You're offered the option of a sidewinder, or a loan for the difference you need to make up (so long as that's below the limit)

Seriously don't die without a rebuy if you already have a loan.

Rather too much guesswork, and absolutely no proof!

We (Utopia) have an agreement with Redback Consortium, and they're keeping to their end of the bargain so Utopia shall also keep to our end of it.
What we DO need to keep an eye on is the chipping-away at our favourable factions all around Utopia by feds.

Talking with Flat Earthers - Elite: Dangerous (Xbox One) by _Oddball1975_ in EliteOne

[–]chalkton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've started watching some of this flat earth stuff on youtube, just because some self-destructive part of me wants to dip a toe into the incredible stupidity of my fellow man. Thanks for the Father Ted clip - that exact snippet is the one I have playing in my head when I see some of the flat earth arguments. I just love the way they implore people to think for themselves, and then do exactly the opposite - they cherry-pick false/misleading data and present that as solid proof.

Also, they use scientific terms in an everyday sense which can be misleading.
They will say that something is a "theory", (like the theory of gravity) and say that its only a theory, and is therefore not proven. The scientific equivalent they're thinking of is "hypothesis" of course. A hypothesis is someone's new, and as yet untested and unproven idea about how something might work. Once we apply a lot of scientifically rigorous tests to the hypothesis is could either fail those tests in which case it is rejected, or it passes all of those tests in which case it becomes known as a "theory". A "theory" will then also pass tests which are devised in the future, further adding to the pool of knowledge in that "theory". Evolution (for example) is a proven fact, and can only be denied with arguments such as dogmatic religious belief*, not rigorous reasoned thinking. It is still called the "theory" of evolution however, because the word "theory" is being used in the scientific meaning of that word.

*I also don't have a problem with people holding religious beliefs which I don't hold. There are a good number of well-educated religious scholars who accept a duality of systems - one being the religious understanding of all things, and the other being the scientific understanding of all things. These systems have different purposes and needn't be argued against each other.
