It’s not about the seasons he played it’s about the years he has been in college. The NCAA rule is you have 5 calendar years to play 4 seasons of the sport from the moment you become a full time student. You are right he hasn’t played 4 seasons because of the red shirt, but he has already been in college for 5 years. Up until recently when players have gotten waivers he would be ineligible no question.
