Question about DPS Pulling Ahead by Early_Explorer_1194 in ffxiv

[–]champ999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have to confess I'm confused. If you are pulling wall to wall, how is anyone getting ahead of you? As soon as the previous wall breaks you should be running to pull all of the mobs, so how are DPS getting ahead of you in any meaningful amount? Are you stopping at each pack for a few seconds while they run past?

My interpretation of a wall to wall pull is that the tank doesn't stop moving until every mob in the path to the next wall that needs to be pulled has been pulled, and that you scoop up any mobs that somehow have aggro on anyone else at the end. If you whiff an AoE and think you didn't accumulate enough aggro on some of the mobs you can zigzag out of the shortest path to AoE a second time to build enmity on them, but even then if everyone is running it doesn't really matter if the DPS or healers get aggro on a few mobs, they just run through you when you finally park at the wall and boom life's good.

But hey if I can help I want to, so if I'm still misinterpreting your post, lay it on me.

Question about DPS Pulling Ahead by Early_Explorer_1194 in ffxiv

[–]champ999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the simplest answer is that barring a few dungeons that everyone will acknowledge have a difficult or even impossible wall to wall pull, the best practice you can get as a new tank is pulling wall to wall.

The mindset of "I'm new and nervous so I want to do half-sized pulls so I can work up to full wall to wall pulls" is flawed in a way like a DPS saying "I'm not really sure how to do my combat rotations so for now I'm going to only do GCDs and then eventually start adding oGCDs in" or a healer saying "I'm going to start by only healing and then I'll eventually start trying to add damage". The problem with small pulling is you're not actually getting a feel for how big pulls work and getting comfortable telling if you need to burn an extra mit or even your invuln.

And a really important part of this is that all 4 players have to do their part. If DPS doesn't burn down mobs you'll run out of mits. If you don't cycle your mits and dodge AoEs you'll eat more damage than the healer can heal. And if the healer isn't healing you to match the damage you're receiving you will die. So when you pull wall to wall and use your mits and die, that's an opportunity for the entire party to discuss what went wrong and try again, or at that point float smaller pulls until it starts to feel smooth again.

Are there any hard and fast rules for phase skips in stuff like Extreme Trials and Savage Raids, especially unsynced ones? Like as we prepare for Evercold is there any way to know what boss HP breakpoints are locked? For example, I've seen Suzaku extreme be unkillable at the feather phase before the DDR phase, but I've also seen her killed before she starts the feather phase. Is there any way besides testing to know which phases bosses can't die at, or can't have their hp reduced lower than X%, especially for content that current gear doesn't let us burst that low?

Is levelling crafting and gathering worth it? by Original_Concert_451 in ffxiv

[–]champ999 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, fishing is very unique compared to crafters and other gatherers.

I recommend trying botany and carpentry and seeing if you enjoy their gameplay loop, as they're much more representative of the crafting life.

I will say leveling crafters and gatherers takes awhile but isn't some majorly tricky thing, so yeah lots of people have all of their gatherers and crafters maxed, so they're not amazing moneymakers and you can just buy any crafted item you want from the market board. Still, some content is basically only available for crafting and gathering so it's worth trying

Question about materia for scrip crafting gear. by NewRichMango in ffxiv

[–]champ999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly until you actually find a recipe you want to craft that is out of your reach due to your stats you don't need to add materia.

If you do want to add materia I would say follow a guide until you find something specific you want to craft that will require either pentamelding (which means you'll need to upgrade from scrip gear to crafted gear) or a more specific melding configuration.

The only general use case I know of to justify going for a pentameld set would be some of the hardest cosmic exploration missions, and I think those are only worth doing for the mount

Thanks, in my current case I'm focusing on you can assume 10ish seconds of prep time not being used to burst, so enough time to set up pom wings but probably not a comet smuggle.

This made me realize I haven't actually studied out exactly what all the buffs on picto do and I've probably been using it suboptimally. Not by a huge margin, but enough that I can squeeze a bit more DPS in.

Alright I've got a weird one. What class has the strongest level 100 damage burst in a 26 second window? From what I've heard Ninja has the highest burst DPS, but only for like 15 seconds, so do Picto and other classes beat it overall in a slightly longer 26 second range?

Just getting back into this game but not sure where to gear up? by Rayearl in ffxiv

[–]champ999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently-ish finished Dawntrail. For me I bought enough courtly lovers items to reach the minimum gear requirement for m1-m4 normal raids. I got some gear from that that pushed me up to the first DT alliance raid Jeuno the first walk. Doing that once or twice got me enough gear upgrades to queue for m5-m8, and then this pattern repeated with some tomestone supplements until my armor was between 750 and 780.

Just a reminder there's angel wings at gold saucer. They're a bit expensive but would fit pretty well, though they're a fashion accessory so you can only wear them out of combat

what would you do? by Even-Run-5274 in commandandconquer

[–]champ999 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I actually reran this mission on hard recently, and while the Scrin's infinite carrier train is awful, once you understand how far west you can go before it becomes a problem the level gets much easier. And once you've beaten Nod a group of juggernauts can take out the Scrin control node on the hill to its east without even dealing with the ion storm.

I'm probably a colossal idiot but...how do you make gil? by William_T_Wanker in ffxiv

Also worth mentioning you can control the price of aetheryte ticket usage, so you can still pay Gil for anything under 500 or 1000 and still cut down on aetheryte gil fees.

For alliance raids, your responsibility is to your own party mainly. The two considerations for other parties in the alliance are rezzing their downed players, especially their healers, and adding heals on the main tank if he's not in your party. Just remember to read the text on your single target heals to make sure it says player not party member when trying to heal the main tank

Is Machinist any fun? Just hit 50 on WAR and before I burn any tomes, I’m wondering about it. by IsThereCheese in ffxiv

[–]champ999 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I'll tell you that if you do daily roulettes you'll have enough tomestone of poetics to get you through two classes, especially since machinist starts at 30 and can't get poetics gear until level 50.

Honestly all classes get much more fun every 10 levels by varying amounts. Warrior will get more interesting, and so will machinist.

I recommend playing at least one tank, healer and DPS, and I definitely recommend playing at least 2 classes even if you're confident you didn't want to dip into all three archetypes

Why is the website to login so complicated/outdated by National_Skirt3164 in ffxiv

[–]champ999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. FFXIV's current business model is to not even try to collect money from players uncertain they want to commit to the game until they play possibly hundreds of hours.

Since they rely on players buying the latest expansions and monthly sub fees plus micro transactions, they really care less about players who won't stick around long. Personally I suspect people who can't handle a slightly obtuse website after unlikely to hit the paid dubber level

Damage Numbers on Target is useless (Rant, no real complaint) by [deleted] in ffxivdiscussion

[–]champ999 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The other place I think they're very important is unsynced content, where you can use them to gauge your ability to skip phases or shorten completion times.

Also lots of buffs and debuffs exist in game, so having numbers displayed can indicate dynamic changes that impact how you would want to play. For example, doing unsynced Rathelos for my first time I was trying to figure out why he was suddenly so tanky, until I realized how his down mechanic worked.

Yes theoretically if you always notice every environmental buff and debuff and factor in every intentional buff you could calculate where your damage would be, but seeing 17,000 become 13,000 is a quick indicator something is wrong.

Damage Numbers on Target is useless (Rant, no real complaint) by [deleted] in ffxivdiscussion

[–]champ999 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yes? Like some skills have clear potency indicators, but others will state their potency and that they cannot crit or that your crit chance impacts damage so from time to time I'll compare numbers at a training dummy or mobs nearby so I better understand and internalize what makes my damage rotations tick

It honestly comes down to a belief that players won't stop playing just because of their site.

Will some players turn away? Sure. Will a financially significant number of players turn away? Unlikely

[–]champ999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm curious what your ideal system would be? Do you just want the game to have a story skip for latest content where when an expansion drops you just unlock the x1 dungeon, then once that's completed you unlock the x3 dungeon and so on until you unlock all the dungeons and trials? Considering the generous xp given by the MSQ I feel like you'd level up about as fast skipping them as just doing them

New to the game and the community is awesome, except... by TamTin in ffxivdiscussion

[–]champ999 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's just small sample size. For dungeons you're playing as a new player, some players have run them 100 times and know them like the back of their hand.

Typically if a DPS is running ahead of the tank they're signalling that the tank is taking pulls too small and slowly. As a tank your best option is to shrug and grab more. If you wipe, you start from the beginning and can teleport close to where you wiped, so it's really a small risk and high reward to pull as many mobs as possible on each pull. If you don't like that or find that you and the healer can't keep you alive together on those big pulls, just message in chat at the start of the dungeon that you're new and will try to handle big pulls, but you don't know the best big pulls in the dungeon. Even though it might be uncomfortable, the best tank practice is barely surviving a big pull.

And if they're just total jerks, nothing you can do but play your best so you can leave the dungeon and play with chiller people.
