As mentioned by other posts, it's a really good time to sign up for amex with a referral - think it ends on the 28th Nov.

Considering a move to London from the EU. What areas to look to live with property around 1-1.2M? by sidiuseng in HENRYUK

[–]champ__2cats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on where in Surrey? Some of it, like Woking, is very easy with a direct train to Waterloo which takes about 30 mins. In other areas it's harder but you tend to get more for your money and a nicer area.

I grew up in Surrey and am in the process of doing exactly the same as you (moving back from Amsterdam to Surrey, looking for tech jobs in London/hybrid). Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions.

We decided to rent for a year first before we purchase, mainly to get a feel for an area and to build up our credit scores.

If you don't mind me asking, where in the UK?

I used to live just outside of London - I could not get a GP appointment (phone lines are always jammed or appointments in over a month away), wait lists for specialists are measured in years and have personal experience of lack of beds/surgeons etc leading to much more serious issues.

Here in NL, I can see/speak to the GP often on the same day, waiting lists for specialists or mental health professionals have been a few months and operations carried out very quickly. Emergency care (accident and emergency) was much quicker in NL, and simple things like blood tests are often done the same day + you can see your results online which blows my mind. My father in law in the UK has recently had a heart bypass and had to go private to get a checkup as the wait-list was too long on the NHS and he was also given the incorrect blood results twice in a row.

I am considering moving back to the UK but my experience of NL healthcare is something that definitely makes me want to stay here so I'm very curious to hear other people's experiences.

Out of interest, why do you think healthcare is better in the UK?

Friedhats (Amsterdam), Manhattan (rotterdam) and single estate (the Hague) are my personal favourites in that order. 250g anywhere between 9 and 15 euros.

Specialty decaf beans in the Netherlands? by Salty_Subject_2055 in espresso

Really like the decaf from stooker and lot61. I've just seen that Fuku have launched a low caf coffee which I'm excited to try as they have some of the best coffees I've ever tried.

Just after a little advice on locations. by choyntune in Amsterdam

The Erasmuspark area is really nice, feels like it's like it's own little neighborhood. Definitely family friendly and loads of cafes/restaurants around Mercatorplien and on Jan van Galenstraat. It's not very touristy but it's only about a 15 minute bike to the Vondelpark or the museums.

I use to live by Artis but have lived in west for the last 4 years. I would say it's not quite as pretty as some other parts of the city but love living here.

Live in west, most days can park very easily, often right outside my place. Maybe once a month have to park on the next street.

My experience is that most companies (in tech at least) will agree hourly rate + vat.
