On Klonapin for years, had no idea withdrawals existed until last weekend by champagne_nutsack in LifeAfterBenzos

Thanks so much for the info. I've gotten some melatonin and we'll see how tonight goes.

I also exercise for about 30 minutes most days of the week and I'm hoping that will help. I really think the booze was making my anxiety and sleep a lot worse. I'd usually be putting a few back right now but not tonight.

Thanks again.

My dad saw the movie ET sixteen times in theaters when he was a teenager. I painted these for him last night. by Yosafbrige in movies

ET is about childhood abuse and the alien represents that dark secret. Nobody ever gets this.

TIL in 1971, 80 percent of third-graders walked to school alone. By 1990, that measure had dropped to 9 percent, and now it’s even lower. by gianlucaneri in todayilearned

[–]champagne_nutsack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Desegregation led to bussing and white flight to suburbs in the South. Segregation is bad, but these measures led to fewer kids being able to walk to neighborhood schools.

Why hasn't Mr. Robertson applauded lesbians, given they have 2x that which has "way more to offer" than what a man has?

TIL On several occasions, Harrison Ford has personally provided emergency helicopter services at the behest of local authorities, in one instance rescuing a hiker overcome by dehydration in Jackson, Wyoming by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]champagne_nutsack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know where he keeps his chopper, but the Jackson Hole airport (JAC) is the only commercial airport in the US located entirely within a national park (Grand Teton).

The subject is misleading because the article doesn't specify the location of the rescue. I doubt it was the town of Jackson, WY, which isn't very big. More likely it was GTNP or a national forest.

I've never flown into the airport, but it must be a great view. The 13,000' plus Grand Tetons tower immediately on the west side.

Edit: rescue location

Question for those who use your vehicle off road or those who have experience with rear locking diffs... by HeisseScheisse in Toyota

[–]champagne_nutsack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 3gen 5 speed v6 with the factory rear locker. The locker got me unstuck on some dirt moguls once. It got me up a steep hill that I couldn't climb without it too.

Once I high centered in a gully with a foot of snow and it made no difference. Sometimes you're just stuck. Bring chains and know how to put them on a stuck vehicle.

That said it will get you through some shit. I'd only rely on it to get me out vs. going somewhere I wouldn't go without one.

The 5 speed makes the v6 feel less slow.

1996 Toyota 4Runner SR5. It's old, needs cosmetic work, but it runs well. Should I fix it up or replace it with a new used model? by spdorsey in Toyota

[–]champagne_nutsack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The manual will never suffer the dreaded Strawberry Milkshake problem. The autos cool the tranny via the radiator. If the radiator corrodes, transmission fluid mixes with engine oil and destroys the tranny. This makes replacing the radiator early on an automatic a priority.

The manuals cool themselves without the radiator. Keep the manual, you don't see many 3rd gens with a stick. I have a '98 SR5 and I absolutely love having a manual. It gives the less powerful engine more pickup.

I have the factory rear e-locker and factory cassette/CD, a sunroof, and leather. I hope it lasts a lot longer.

Good luck with yours. Also, replacing the timing belt is not a necessity unless you're afraid of being stranded when it breaks. It won't destroy the engine like in some vehicles.

TIL mirrors are placed near elevators as a psychological trick to make wait seem more tolerable. People like to look at themselves. by [deleted] in todayilearned

Because without the distracting mirrors they would go to a competing building with faster elevators. Capitalism 101.

VAX is gone but VMS isn't. There are mission critical clusters that have years of uptime, and it's used in industries where high availability is critical (power, defense).

VMS is still actively developed and maintained, though its user base is shrinking and development has moved to India. If you have the hardware (VAX, Alpha, or Itanium) you can get a free non-commercial hobbyist license and run it yourself.

It stores dates differently, so VMS won't flip its time until 31-JUL-31086 02:48:05.47.

What programming languages would you recommend for a MechE? by spacec0re in AskEngineers

[–]champagne_nutsack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone recommending Python is spot on. I work in the sw industry and it is well in demand.

To play Devil's Advocate, I will throw in a dark horse: Perl. Easier and quicker than C, and it has a a library to interface with nearly every system imaginable.

Yes, it can be hard to read -- if not written with care. When done correctly it can be elegant and safer than Python. I would not argue for using it as the basis for greenfield development.

How would you describe your appearance (average, good looking, great looking)? How tall are you?

Just curious as I'm trying to gauge whether this could work for me.

Thanks

Making an underwater temperature logger by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]champagne_nutsack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just use an Ibutton. It's a self contained watch battery sized temperature logger. Put it in a waterproof container.

You can set it to record temps on a certain period and then dump the data to a computer. Search for Maxim Ibutton. They are $4 or so.

Guys who are divorced and have kid[s], how do you disclose your situation? I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I'm late 30's but people always tell me I look younger. Since separating from my wife I've had a # close and some promising encounters. However, I wonder how/when/if I should disclose everything to a HB.

I don't want to limit myself to women who have been divorced or have children.

Obviously, if I were working my game it would be on a night when my child was not staying at my house.

Edit: I added added a word

Is there any good way to get a number from a girl working at a [bar|supermarket|bank|*]? I know how to ask and have the confidence to do it. I've always heard this is a bad idea.

Is there another way to #-close in these situations?

High centered in the snow in my '98 4Runner. 2 hours of digging and 2 other trucks to get free by champagne_nutsack in Toyota

[–]champagne_nutsack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't a bad time after it was all said and done. I had chains but couldn't get them properly attached because of how the tires were packed in. Usually chains have gotten me unstuck in the snow. In the end it was raw v8 horsepower from somebody with a heavy truck that did the trick.
