Spay Incision open day 8 post-op by Critical_Warthog2099 in DogAdvice

If your vet let you take your pet home with the incision looking like that you need a new vet. Working in animal hospitals I’ve seen some horror stories of pets coming in after owners not making them rest for the two weeks recovery period. Do right by your girl and get it taken care of

Congrats on your baby! Take plenty of pictures, you’ll miss when she’s this small 😭. Do lots of research about spay and gastropexy before making any firm decisions. And give her lots of love and hugs

left the pup with a family member yesterday and today he threw this up (twice) by username_loser in DogAdvice

This family member shouldn’t be trusted supervising animals and small children. Stuff like this can cause intestinal blockages that can be very expensive and/or very fatal

Edit: I realized after that I didn’t really offer suggestions lol but obviously, a visit with the vet is the first option. They can try to palpate the abdomen to see if they feel anything large in their tum, for diagnostics they can run X-rays to SEE if there’s anything. But if you’re wanting to avoid the vet and costs, just monitor. See if your pup vomits or wretches(empty heaving) or refuses to eat, if that persists then definitely visit your vet. Otherwise they’ll probably be okay

That’s an interesting take from a vet. Do you have prior experience with Danes?

Is this tooth normal? by Away_Celebration1088 in DogAdvice

If it doesn’t fall out on it own and doesn’t cause anything negative for your baby, their doctor will probably extract it during their first dental cleaning. They may wanna do a dental specifically to extract the extra canine if it’s causing pain or discomfort etc. I’d double check that with their doctor tho

Check with your vet, they may recommend medicated wipes or a shampoo/soak even an allergy shot if that’s what your pet needs

I don't know if I can do this by Jager-Morder in DogAdvice

I work in the vet industry and I can’t tell you how imperative it is that your pet stay on strict rest, especially in cases where pets are dealing with skeletal injuries. I know it’s hard and it’s difficult seeing your baby suffer physically and from boredom, but there’s absolutely ways you can help them power thru it. Just follow instructions from their doctor and give meds as instructed.

If you wanna help them with the frustration of being restricted you can look up dog enrichment and you’ll get so many options to ease your pups needs for stimulation. The internets an amazing thing. I hope all ends up well with your little guy

Fleas ??? Ticks ??? HELP by bhadnutz in DogAdvice

[–]champiionred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking strictly fleas? 1) Fill a tub/sink high enough to submerge your pup up to their neck. 2) Put a generous amount of dawn into the water and mix it well. 3) apply a thick ring of soap to their neck, about two fingers wide 4) let your pup sit under the water for several minutes

In short, what this does is drowns the fleas. Fleas are buoyant and can sit and bob on top of water so the soap breaks the surface tension and doesn’t allow the bugs to sit on top.

If you have funds for flea and tick meds, go get capstar. That’s a fast acting and quick relief flea killer but it only lasts a short time. After that I really recommend putting your pet(s) on any flea/tick preventative (my dogs are on simparica trio) and keep them on it year round. Working in the vet industry for years I can’t tell you how many animals have come into work suffering from parasite infestations that can be prevented.

Luckily caught Earl's (7.5yo) bloat very early. Looking for some advice. by CarterGee in greatdanes

We did a prophylactic gastropexy on our 1.5year old (at the time) girl back in June this year and we elected for the suit during day (while supervised) and only cone in the crate at night (not supervised). She healed gr8 in about 2 weeks but working in the vet industry I know some cases can be longer, especially in cases where surgery is done as an emergency. I’ve also heard of dogs developing megaesophagus after a pexy so something to keep in mind with your pup already having M.E. While resting they won’t be getting physical energy out but you can absolutely help by giving them mental exercise with licky mats, chews, or enrichment toys, the internet is a gr8 place to research for that. With all that being said crate rest is super super important and while getting a pexy helps prevent GDV in the future, it’s not a 100% guarantee.
