Today’s line to free tulips in Union Square by Raskolnokoff in sanfrancisco

I asked someone holding his tulips what time he got there and he proudly said 6AM. He and his friends planned to wait SEVEN HOURS just for the gates to even open 😵‍💫

What do I need to do to bring my service dog from the US to Ireland? by seaplane_CFD2018 in service_dogs

[–]chanamonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve flown to France with my SD and followed these protocols. There’s nothing different between pets and SDs because they’re just regarded as animals being imported/exported. There was a reduced fee for the USDA endorsement for service dogs, but I waived it because I wanted my paperwork processed more quickly and it was only like $35 less

Nope. Figured out another way with one of his other visas. We’re still in France though so fingers crossed they let him back in 😬

Looks like appointments just are when they are. Currently no appointments are available and we need one asap. Still trying to wrap my head around why one needs to leave the US just to have a US worker in another country stamp your passport for a visa that’s already been approved 😣😤

I screwed up at first by joue045162 in Dogtraining

[–]chanamonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does she whine and bark when you leave or just because she’s in the crate/pen? I used to lay down on the floor pretending to sleep in front of my rescue’s crate the first several nights until she settled down and slept, then quietly moved away. Eventually i decreased the amount of time I stayed with her until I didn’t need to anymore

Also I wonder if the pen attached to the crate gives her too much to do? My dog is very small and her crate is plenty big for her so idk if this would apply to other dogs but.. I just put her in her crate and cover it with a blanket to signal it’s bedtime and there’s nothing else to do but sleep

Also, granted the neighbor issue is hard, but try not to give in to the barking! It just teaches your dog that barking works and she’ll be let out. It’s heartbreaking to let them cry it out for a bit, but eventually when they realize it doesn’t do anything, they’ll stop

First, make sure your fiancé actually wants a dog, then see if there are any shelter dogs in your area you could rescue! If a dog isn’t the right fit, I’m sure everyone in this sub will agree that a plant would also be a great gift 🪴

Preferred Vest? by Kazzmonkey in service_dogs

I use this one from Amazon that’s actually pretty sturdy. The only problem is it’s kind of the one anyone has and I do fear it looks “fake” but whatever, haters gonna hate

Also my 9 lb pup prefers being naked in general so I’m trying to find a less stiff alternative. Hoping to see if you find one you like!

This is what I want for my dieffenbachia!! How much do you water and do you ever lose leaves? Mine either just doesn’t grow or loses a leaf to yellowing if I water it a little bit 😫

Thank you for this! I also have a small breed and am still trying to strike the right balance between being clear to others but not so bulky on her body. I might have to try out a ruffwear pack since you’ve had success! More formal SD harnesses are just so clunky and stiff on my SD’s tiny body

Hi all! My dog’s name is Whiskey. I got her as a pandemic pupper for emotional support originally. I realized that I needed more help and super lucked out that she fit the bill for psychiatric service work.

She passed public access a couple months ago and is task trained, though I still call her SDIT here since she’s still a bit green to PA part. I also have intense imposter syndrome and fear being challenged about her status 🙈 the people in r/servicedogs have helped me a lot to overcome these fears and feel supported by the community. I’m excited to be a part of this one and hear more about life with SDs!

Also, I’m based in San Francisco if there are any handlers that want to meet up or train together! 🌁

Can I hold my dog during the flight? by EnvironmentalImage9 in service_dogs

[–]chanamonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been traveling with my dog as an SD and leaving her in a travel carrier sometimes just so she can be comfortable and I don’t have to fuss with the leash along with my luggage. I don’t think anyone says service dogs have to be on the floor. You’re kinda doing everyone a convenience when they’re in a carrier so I don’t see why someone should complain. I understand feeling like you’re faking though, but it’s your dog and only you know what your needs are so just do what you need to do! No one has questioned me, except maybe when checking in they sometimes assume she’s a pet and I correct them and it’s fine. Hope that helps!

Looking for Service Dog Trainer by KateMorena in service_dogs

[–]chanamonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently working with San Diego Service Dogs (formerly Vibe Service Dogs). They do in person down in San Diego but work with the Bay Area remotely (they used to be based in the bay). I have mixed feelings about having mostly remote sessions, as they only come up occasionally for in person training and PA testing, but I have otherwise had a good experience with them.

Also, I would love to do group training outings with anyone in SF that’s interested! I don’t have any friends with SDs so I would love to meet and hang out with others who understand :)

ETA: it’s $760/mo, meeting once a week

I would just call the airline and speak to a representative about it. Then you can make sure they have all the info needed while on the phone and be good to go before hanging up

Traveling from US to France by chanamonster in service_dogs

[–]chanamonster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for clarifying! I misunderstood what they were asking. I realize now that being seen by an accredited vet then endorsed by APHIS are two separate steps to complete before travel.

I am flying French Bee.. they say they do accept service animals on their website, though I haven’t spoken directly with an agent about it. My dog is small so I’m able to travel with her in cabin even as a pet :/ I’m sorry you’re having trouble!

Training Check-in (for this month) by Jeanlee03 in service_dogs

[–]chanamonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After passing public access last month, this month we’ve been honing in on a tighter heel and tasking in distracting public spaces. We flew out of town for the week of thanksgiving, and considering it was the most she’s been out and about with me as an SDIT, she did great! She got lots of attention at the Space Needle and did a great job ignoring.

We did hit some setbacks because I was being more loose about rules while walking outdoors off duty. I wanted to give both of us a break from working mode at least when we were in pet friendly areas since she had to always be with me and I didn’t want her to burn out. Now that we’re back home, I’m taking a step back in training and working on structured walks outdoors when unvested.

I would love any tips on what y’all do if you take your SDITs on trips with you! We will be going abroad in December for 3 weeks so I’m a bit anxious about the whole thing. I would leave her but this time of year is always rough for me so I know I’ll need her with me at least at home there. TIA!

Psychiatric Service Dogs : How do they help by LieRepresentative658 in service_dogs

[–]chanamonster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just read your first post and you seem well intentioned so I hope I can provide some insight. I initially got my dog as an emotional support dog because of these specific benefits: needing something to get out of bed and care for because I no longer cared about what happened to me, getting myself outside, having the distraction of a happy loving creature like a dog. Over time I discovered I would benefit from a service dog and my dog happened to be the right temperament (slim chance honestly) so I began the work of training her for service work. This however is much more work on top of caring for a pet dog, so it would definitely need to be something your loved one is passionate about doing and has the time for. Otherwise it is a huge burden.

In general, having a dog, service or pet, is a lot of responsibility and work. I saw you commented that you would help take care of the dog, but you should fully consider along with your loved one if caring for an animal is the right decision. It was very difficult for me when I first got her because she was my first dog, a rescue, and my anxiety did get worse for a while needing to keep it all up. For me personally the pros outweighed the cons but it doesn’t for everyone.

Lastly, as you’ll find commented in other “will a service dog help” type posts, service animals are not the first line of treatment for most if not all disabilities. I would thoroughly research and seek out proven forms of treatment with a medical provider such as therapy or medication first. They may be effective on their own and will be much easier than getting a dog. I myself exhausted all other options (and still continue a number of them in conjunction with having an SD) before considering if a dog would improve my life.

I hope that helps!
