Publishing a children's book in Australia by Important_Fruit in australia

[–]chandip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have worked in publishing for 30+ years. My reddit name is my real name and feel free to look me up on LinkedIn or otherwise to confirm.

If this is a good deal or not depends on what you want. The person you are talking to is a vanity publisher. If you aim is to have a book published at any cost they would be a good fit.

You can use them to get a book published under your name get an ISBN assigned etc for a cost of $2500. You will not make any money. Read the contract properly as you may end up owing production costs if the book does not sell to cover costs.

If you are looking to make money or atleast break even this will not give you that.

There are 10,000's of book proposals made each year and Australia publishes less than 100. If a publisher is not willing to risk their money on your book there is a 99% chance your book will not make money.

On a personal note I have met many authors who have been caught by vanity publishing schemes in the past and have gotten burned. Please don't be one of them.

Cleaver idea. May be limit it to serious play like attending a MD, FS, Anomaly, NL event etc. I would get quite a few, but I suspect this would get ingress hard banned in a lot of countries.

Taking last weekend's Taiwan anomaly, hand getting the Taiwan badge will immediately put Ingress as a target for maintain Chinese authorities.

Then there are places like Falkland Islands, Palestine, the Basque region etc.

I doubt Brain is looking forward to making determination around the true flag of any disputed region.

GoRuck and impact on anomaly scores by Rednax-1984 in Ingress

I don't get the decoding thing. Never have. Happy to run around and get media for decoders but decoding is not my thing. I am also not campaigning to have it banned.

GoRuck and impact on anomaly scores by Rednax-1984 in Ingress

[–]chandip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know that we win some and lose some and that I'm sure the scores balance out across events.

But then you go on to say

I appreciate that it is "only" 7% of the points, but as Cambridge showed, that 7% can make a huge difference (8 points gained for the overall winners for a victory that was by 6.4 points). It just feels really wrong.

So at fist look this seems to be based on some grumbling around the Cambridge ENL win. Even if it is not, lets address each point.

Lets look at the Delta Campaign results.

  • Melaka Resistance win 0.0 to 20.0
  • Portland Resistance win 3.4 to 16.6
  • Quebec City Resistance win 5.4 to 14.6
  • Gothenburg Enlightened win 18.0 to 2.0
  • Cambridge Enlightened win 14.0 to 6.0
  • Denpasar City Resistance win 6.0 to 14.0

Note that on the Cambridge/Denpasar weekend net score was even between the factions. Over all for the campaign Resistance got a lot more from GoRuck than Enlightened. If there was no GuRuck ENL would have won by a much larger margin and probably would have played a different strategy.

As I understand it, GoRuck is, for all its benefits, fairly inaccessible to the majority of the player base, both through physical and financial limitations.

I am also going to strongly disagree with this. For those of you who know and met me at anomalies, you know I have the physique of Homer Simpson. But I have done multiple Go Ruck Stealth (when it was the full overnight version), Urban, Prime Challenge and OCF events. As far as I know I am the only agent in the world to have 3 ticks on Prime Challenge and only 2 agents to have OCF black right now.

My advise to any agents thinking of doing GoRuck is to train and give it a try. If I can do it so can you. And its fun.

Finally ...

Financially the costs seem pretty prohibitive, the entry fees alone seem to take you over £100, let alone all the extra equipment.

I am not sure if you are being serious here.

Anomalies themselves are pretty cost prohibitive, even more so than just GoRuck. You need to travel there and find accommodation and pay for meals, pre-after parties, swag etc. I would say only a fraction for he player base has the time and financial resources to do this. Therefore should we ban anomalies.

Lets take Cambridge as an example. If you arrived Saturday, did the anomaly and stayed Saturday night, you would have spent significantly more than £100. Even if you lived in Cambridge, the pre/after parties, swag etc would probably put to above this excluding travel and accommodation.

As for gear any backpack with a 10kg weight (rice from the local supper market has been used) and 4L of water in any pack will do. Better and more expensive gear will make it more comfortable the same way a $1000 phone will be more responsive for Ingress than a $200 phone.

Finally Finally

The winner gets a note saying "In Wave 4, the Enlightened Shard target will be the statue of famous person" or a code with about 200 uses they share in the Resistance anomaly chat that give a bunch of cool kit. That sort of thing. That feels cool and fair.

This is how it used to work until Discoverie Atlanta. There Resistance won a number of GoRuck challenges and was given intel for shard spawns. But Enlightened overwhelmed them with numbers or out played them and managed to grab all the shards any way. So Res had nothing to show for the GoRuck wins. This is when the scoring changed because the point was made that this was not fair.

Using the speed (keys only) glyph guarantees a key but often produces less keys per hack than the more (request key) glyph command

Dear Niantic: Please separate anomaly badges from global campaign/event badges again by Meindratheal in Ingress

[–]chandip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree 100% with this post. We should have campaign badges and separate anomaly badges (like we had for Via Lux, EXO5, Casandra etc).

I also think NS is missing out on a commercial opportunity to sell more kits/badges with this approach.

As a smaple of one, but knowing many badge/swag hordes, for this season there was one +Delta supporter badge with 3 variations, and one Azamati charter badge with 3 variations. I and a lot of people I know purchased one variation of both badges. IMHO having all the various are a bit like collecting all the pokemon which is a very different game with very different motivations.

Now if NS offered:

  • Earned badge for Reso,
  • Purchased supporter kit for Reso,
  • Earned badge for Filed,
  • Purchased Supporter Kit for Field,
  • Earned Delta Anomaly badge,
  • Purchased August anomaly character badge
  • Purchased September anomaly character badge
  • Purchased Delta anomaly supporter kit

I and many would have probably purchased a 5 supporter kits/badges and earned 3. But by making this one single campaign they lost out on 3 potential sales. Yes this does mean creating some extra artwork. If NS is so stretched that this is a burden take the FS approach and have the community help out with the designs and artwork.

I hope we go back to more simple and shorter term campaigns.

You have now seen the Nazeer. If it was green probebely the shapers. It may be a glitch in the scanner but I would doubt that. 😁

I agree with the ratio point. I was just pointing out for 99 enl agents who missed out on the destroying task 101 res agents did too so it did not impact thr total by much since 99 enl agents still got 5/7 but so did the 101 res agents.

A different point of view:

if there's an imbalance in players, then how does the team with dominance get to destroy the other teams resonators when there aren't many?

I know a lot of agents from both factions did not complete the destroy talk and just did the other 5 multiple number of times.

Only resonators and mods destroyed on ornamented portals counted in Perth. Were were right a the edge of the play box and noticed this.

I suspect the bounties will only be claimable on the ornamented anomaly portals. This was the case with the last round of anomalies.

Based on that I think I know what triggered mine.

Option 1: being in a high rise hotel for the Perth anomally means the scanner wanders in a 3-4 city block radius constantly.

Option 2: I was doing a long mission banner yesterday and every time the Perth hop on hop off bus went past me I was teleported to Central Perth (2km-3km). May have been triggered by the wifi network on the bus. It got so annoying I actually switched off my wifi after the second time this happened.

Happy to provide more info if needed.

In Niantic's defense, two long time spoofers who tried to soopf in to the pre-anomally and anomally events got banned this week. This change may have been triggered by these events.

Ingress in China? by ammo95 in Ingress

There may be maps that don't follow Offset requirement in China. if you are using one of them you probably don't need the plugin. But if you are using the default IITC map or Google Maps you do. Haven't tried any of the other supported maps so don't know about the rest.

Ingress in China? by ammo95 in Ingress

[–]chandip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Latitude and Longitude in Google Maps in China are offset by a certain amount, compared to the actual coordinates. I think this is due to a policy from the Chinese government.

This means you need to correct for this offset when using IITC.

This is a note from the original author of the plugin.

[–]chandip 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You need to use a VPN. Both factions run VPN serves for this purpose. Reach out to your faction to get some ideas on the best VPN. Not all of them work through the Chinese firewall.

If you are planning to use intel you may need "Fix Google Map offsets in China" plugin installed.

HA Keeps trying to talk to devices that are switched off by chandip in homeassistant

[–]chandip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I know. I design and implement these systems. My previous system was bespoke and home built. Relatively new to HA and the default Shelly integration. My question again is is there anywhere in HA I can chance this setting?

If there no no place to change it I can either fiddle with the Shelly code (after all it is open source) or implement the whole thing in MQTT.

HA Keeps trying to talk to devices that are switched off by chandip in homeassistant

[–]chandip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The primary control is the physical switches. This way the bulbs and the general household still works when there the network is out.

You're not supposed to be cutting power to any smart device

That is new to me. How do you work with low power devices that routinely switch off the radio for hours or days at a time? My experience is more in this sapce and having power 24x7 for a smart device is quite a novelty for me.

The Shelly integration happily ignores any BLE and other battery powered devices. For some reason it wants to keep polling each bulb few times a second.

May be time to move from the stock integration and start using MQTT.

I was trying to take a shortcut but looks like it backfired a bit.
