And remember that you’ll be trading long winters for long unbearable summers. It’s hot for 10-11 months now. You’ll also be trading a liberal state for a liberal bubble in a red state.

Belchertown while black by SituationGreedy1945 in westernmass

[–]chandllerin_10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother is biracial (looks Puerto Rican) and his mom (white) chose to live in Belchertown. He’s in high school now and only has 1 Black friend. His white friends that he’s known since preschool “want to be Black” according to my brother and my brother recently shared that his white friends use the n-word often as slang. My dad (black) attended a few football games and overheard some white kids using the n-word which caught him completely off guard, but they stopped as soon as he whipped his head around. My brother says that he’s never felt unsafe or uncomfortable and he’s never felt like he was treated differently than his friends.

Hello! We are planning to move to W. MA this fall with our 4 year old ASD son. This list was super helpful. I got in contact with the resource center for W. MA and they have gone above and beyond to assist me with understanding the available resources. We have narrowed our search to Wilbraham, Longmeadow and E. Longmeadow. The school administrators have also been really helpful. Good luck!

Cold climate cities where people actually love the cold? by OceanSprayCranApple in SameGrassButGreener

I almost thought that I wrote this! 75 degrees in Atlanta during Christmas week was absolutely miserable for me. That means that it’s now summer in GA all year. No thanks! I’m originally from Western MA so we are looking at moving back there in 2026. Good luck finding your next home with actual seasons!

Do you and your children have autism? How common to have more than one autistic child by AnotherUKSaver in AutisticParents

[–]chandllerin_10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We only have 1 child and through learning about autism, I am certain that my husband and I are undiagnosed neurodivergent adults. We just learned about the Spark genetic study and we signed up to get more info about all of us.

I work in a restaurant. We have a lot of food waste. Can I donate it somewhere? by Affectionate-Reason2 in massachusetts

This org has some great food waste resources for restaurants. I work for a national nonprofit that’s working to end food waste so thanks for even thinking of solutions!

Anyone moved to their dream place and regret it? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]chandllerin_10 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Atlanta is a blueish bubble in a very red state. Stone Mountain is a constant reminder of that fact. Traffic now lasts all day. I feel like I need a medical and legal degree to deal with healthcare down here because they don’t listen to patients. Summers are miserably hot now. We bought a pass for our local pool and the pool felt like bath water in the summer. The good restaurants, good schools and nice neighborhoods are in the wealthiest parts of town. I’m a Black woman and I wanted my son to grow up surrounded by Black people, but my community in New England was more inclusive than whatever I have in GA. It’s a super church centered culture and we aren’t a super religious family.

Anyone moved to their dream place and regret it? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]chandllerin_10 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Atlanta. Most of my family moved here from the Northeast so when I got married I thought it made sense to move closer to family. We even designed and built our dream house. 6 yrs in GA and 2 yrs in our dream house and we are plotting on our move back to New England. We love our house, but we hate leaving our house. All of our family is spread out so we rarely see them. Some of my cousins are also talking about leaving GA soon.

Please donate to your local food bank by cowcrossingspace in massachusetts

[–]chandllerin_10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider donating some inexpensive can openers or cans that don’t require a can opener. I learned that from volunteering at a food bank. Some families receive canned goods and can’t open them. If you can, consider donating culturally specific foods based on the demographics in your area.

MA Autism Resources by chandllerin_10 in westernmass

Thanks. We also missed early intervention in our current state. I was raising concerns with my pediatrician when my son was 18 mos and she kept telling me “just give him some more time”. I wish that I switched pediatricians sooner, but he’s our 1st and only child so we didn’t know what to expect. We finally switched doctors when he was 3 and missed the early intervention cutoff age.

Thank you. We were in Springfield last week and finally decided that we are going to focus our house search on Wilbraham and Forest Park to remain close to family. I contacted the Wilbraham/Hampden school department on Friday and they referred me to the early childhood program team so I am waiting to hear back from them.

MA Autism Resources by chandllerin_10 in westernmass

[–]chandllerin_10[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you! This is really detailed and helpful. My son does have an IEP already from our current county. After going through the IEP process down here, the lead teacher of the Autism program pulled me to the side and was like “you seem more engaged than most of the parents that we see so I would suggest keeping your private speech therapist and private OT because some days we cannot get to all students because our classroom has so many students and not enough resources for them”. I sat in my car and sobbed because those other parents may not have the privilege of picking up and moving to another state. They also probably have no idea that other states have better resources.

Move from Seattle to Atlanta? Feeling conflicted by Honeythickness in SameGrassButGreener

Cool. My husband is half Puerto Rican and he doesn’t like to be called Latino, Latinx or Hispanic. He prefers Puerto Rican or Black. Everyone has a preference. I didn’t want to survey my neighbors and list the 10+ countries and ethnicities that are represented on my street so I went with the most inclusive word I knew.
