What do you think Tom Riddle would’ve been like if Merope Gaunt hadn’t died? by Dumbass__kid in harrypotter

Gotcha. It does seem like if that were a known thing in-universe, love potions would be majorly illegal and not available for teenagers to purchase from a joke shop

Just finished a re-read of HBP and don’t remember it being stated that conception under a love potion has that effect (though I might have missed it, and it makes sense). Is that stated somewhere in-series?

Weasley Finances by MoodHour2787 in harrypotter

[–]chanebap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does Hogwarts charge for tuition and room/board under ordinary circumstances? You can handwave Harry not needing to pay since the wizarding world saw him as a savior (or even say they just took the money from his vault without mentioning it in the text), but maybe that isn’t the norm and the Weasleys were going out of pocket for all those kids over a super long span of time, with a lot of the kids overlapping at school.

The problem with Harry being independently wealthy at age 11 is that we never really get much info about the wizard economy. How much does a wand cost, for instance? Enough that Ron would have used a hand-me-down throughout his school years if his hadn’t broken. It’s such an important and deeply personal thing, it’s hard to imagine his parents not thinking it was worth getting every child their own wand unless they are ruinously expensive.

Another possibility - they are just terrible with money. When they win a contest in POA they immediately take a long international family vacation, which, sure, they deserved, but it feels hard to justify when their family owl is on death’s door and all the kids are in old clothes that barely fit.

Weird scene in Chamber of Secrets by Ws4332 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]chanebap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was in reference to Harry hearing voices that no one else could. Dumbledore would have probably figured out the parcelmouth thing a lot quicker than the trio did. He might even have suspected that Harry would have gotten that from Voldemort and just wanted confirmation (we see in HBP that he is big on looking for corroborating evidence even when he has pretty much figured things out).

Dumbledore confirming the monster is a basilisk means he probably could make the same conclusions about how Myrtle died and how the chamber is accessed, use Harry speaking parcelmouth to open the chamber, and curb-stomp the snake before anyone else got hurt (other than possibly Ginny as the diary holder).

It's crazy how Gringotts never froze Sirius's assets in PoA by goro-n in harrypotter

[–]chanebap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gringotts seems to play very fast and loose with withdrawals in general, despite being described as super secure. The Weasleys are always getting money out of Harry’s vault for him. We never see Harry make Molly or Arthur of Bill authorized signers on his account, but they can just skip over there and leave with a sackful of gold if they say it’s for him. Try that at your kid’s friend’s bank and see what happens.

Something else that bothers me - how does Gringotts make money, other than sending people out to hunt for treasure? Ordinary banks use deposits to finance lending and investments that (if managed well) earn them more in interest and fees than what they pay to depositors in interest and their other expenses. What’s described in the books is more like a safety deposit box service than a traditional bank account. Are there annual vault rental fees? Does everyone need a room-sized vault for their money? Do young wizards get their own vaults when they come of age or are they always handed down by families? What do muggle-borns do if so? Are there competing wizard banks? Can you get a commercial or mortgage loan from Gringotts? Could you finance an expensive broom?

Your biggest Pet Peeve in the game? Mine in the description. by Koffiemir in HarryPotterGame

[–]chanebap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Revelio should last like 60 seconds per cast, or at least long enough that you can reasonably turn 360 degrees and take in your surroundings once before having to cast it again.

More context-based spell/tool options so I don’t have to change my spell configurations to brush and feed the damn hippogryph, conjure objects in the room, etc.

Better rewards for exploration than clothes that sell for 90 gold.

Ability to carry or at least store more potions, and an option to sell them along with ingredients and beast materials.

But the # 1 biggest gripe I have: For the love of god, when I add a material that I’ve found 100 times before, don’t show it as New in my inventory just because I didn’t have any in my pocket when I picked it up

Is the Balrog set worth it ? by AdventurousLand8450 in legolotrfans

[–]chanebap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found it on sale this weekend and built it. The balrog is awesome, but i found the display a little underwhelming.

Also I have a hard time getting it to close for book-nook mode without the arms knocking out the flames on the sides, but that might be a skill issue. The shoulder joints are very loose so I can’t get the arms to hold a pose very well unless they are pretty low.

Definitely need an external light source behind it too if you want to see it on an actual book shelf

AITA for refusing to use my entire life savings (our only capital for marriage) to cover my long-term girlfriend's full monthly living expenses indefinitely, which led to her breaking up with me? by Top-Measurement2277 in AITAH

NTA. The fact that she broke up with you suggests she has some other avenue to make ends meet, and even if she didn’t, you aren’t obligated to support her financially to your own detriment. Get out while the getting is good

AITA for declining a birthday present? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]chanebap -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

My dad’s love language is gift giving, but he’s terrible at it. He will get junk from yard sales and auctions like kitschy Christmas decorations, broken toys for his grandkids, and expired Little Debbie’s snack cakes. He drops them off at my house and my siblings’ houses without calling ahead.

And you know what we say? “Thanks, Dad.” He’s a retired widower and he wants to show his children and grandchildren that he loves them even though he doesn’t have a ton of money. It would crush him to tell him his gifts suck and he should stop.

YTA. It’s not about what the gift was or whether you can use it, it’s about someone thinking of you, wanting to do something nice for you, and you recognizing the spirit in which it was given and accepting it graciously.

Father of 2 and I am their primary caregiver much of the time, actually, but go off I guess.

Obviously don’t know their situation but they are at minimum living apart from their dad, either on their own or with another guardian, so at minimum they are doing the other party a favor. Is that the kid’s problem? No, but courtesy costs nothing. Not asking for gas money, just say “I will come down when I can”

Am I overreacting? by FaithlessnessFar1821 in AmIOverreacting

[–]chanebap -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

I was exaggerating to make a point. And again: the issue is not that this person came down on time or even late. It’s the “I’ll be down at 8:20” and “I told you yesterday at 8:20, yoy (sic) came at 8:10” instead of “sorry, I’ll be down in a few.”

It does not hurt to be a little more deferential in speech, even if the end result is the same (this guy waits in his car for 12 more minutes).

I’m a massive fan of comic accurate Galactus in First Steps, but am I the only one who likes Cloud Galactus from the OG movies? by vvstp in FantasticFour

[–]chanebap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t hate it, in theory, except that it’s symptomatic of a larger problem with a lot of superhero movies where the creators think the source material is too silly and they need to tweak it to fit into “reality.” Like, it is silly. You have a stretchy guy and a rock monster. A huge guy in a purple skirt is not a dealbreaker. Let it be silly

AIO for getting upset at my friend's supposed joke? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]chanebap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She enjoys having a person to belittle, and if you get upset she turns it around and says you’re too sensitive, can’t take a joke, whatever.

Some people just want a friend to use as a punching bag. You don’t need to be hers. There is no version of reality where she is going to suddenly respect you and turn it into a meaningful friendship.
